Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Except that the show is doing AFFC and ADWD at the same time.

I could imagine them taking three seasons to cover the later two books, but not four.

I think we're going to see Asshai and the extreme north of the Westerosi landmass before the series is out. Wasn't there some mention somewhere of a 'curtain of light' in relation to the Others?

The word "farther" refers to distance, like "I stopped at the tree, but continued farther down the road". The word "further" refers to ideas, like "I'm sorry, I have to leave, shall we continue this conversation further another time?".

And I thought my language is fancy because the word "weapon" is a synonym for penis.

I don't know if anyone outside of the UK saw this, but that Lyanna portrait made me think of it.

New GRRM interview.

2014 still seems far too optimistic seeing as he seems to have completed very little writing in the last few months (200 pages complete, 200 to be revised has been floating around for a while now).

Martin's pacing is, in a word, modern. The frenetically switching point-of-view, the telling of the story from the point of view of a dozen characters, twenty-page character chapters, and insane frequency of cliffhangers, all of this is attuned to the modern world, with the short attention span, the compulsive desire to multitask, and the need for stimulation.

Even the overabundance of characters and the deluge of description can be described in terms of the data-drenched information age.

NEW CHARACTER! STUFF HAPPENS! SWITCH TO OTHER CHARACTER! CLIFFHANGER! OTHER OTHER CHARACTER! NEW PLACES! DESCRIPTION! SUDDEN, BRUTAL DEATH! FORMERLY NEW CHARACTER! SHOCKING REVEAL! SWITCH CHARACTERS AGAIN! RESOLVE CLIFFHANGER! LOOK, A MASSACRE! WHAM! BOOM! BANG!

That post made less and less sense as it went along. Somehow, modern fiction has more and more detailed descriptions than classic literature? Are you for real?

What's with the really contrived and insubstantial criticisms of GRRM I'm seeing lately?

You can't write description in capital letters with an exclamation mark as an example of how fast paced Martin's books are. It doesn't work like that.
He's the Doctor. He could be anywhere in time and space.

I'd also take issue with "STUFF HAPPENS!" That's called "plot", and it's rather expected by modern readers. If you don't like it, I can recommend The Three Sisters.

[up][up]Maybe it's like a breakup. They're annoyed that their strong feelings are unrequited, so to make themselves feel better they start dwelling on every little flaw. Or it's like an addiction and the withdrawal is making them lash out tongue

I've figured out why A Feast for Crows feels so weird.

By now it's becoming clear that things are going to come down to a fight (or an alliance; or both, in succession) between the Starks and their direwolves (the "ice") and Dany and her dragons (the "fire"). Those are the two groups that are almost entirely left out of AFFC. So it's A Song of Ice and Fire minus the ice and fire. From that perspective, it does seem like Martin got a little too bogged down in the political intrigue and lost the main plot.

Also, who else agrees with this interpretation of Cersei's prophecy: The "younger and more beautiful" queen is Dany (duh) and the valonqar is therefore Aegon. Ie: Dany will defeat the Lanisters and Aegon will strike the finishing blow.

Not a good interpretation, partly because Aegon is Dany's nephew, not her brother.

Even if Aegon was Dany's brother, taking Valonqar to mean anyone's younger brother instead of Cersei's younger brother means it's so vague that we can't reasonably expect to interpret it.

My personal theory is that the Valonqar is her brother-in-law, Stannis. Because Tyrion is too obvious, and why bother using a foreign word for little brother unless you're planning to pull a linguistic trick along those lines.

[up]He had an older sister, so.
