^^^Maybe, but in Google's policy, tho only specifically mentioned content was foot fetish.

Fast Eddie said something about how we used to levelling up at google's system. Does this mean that we get more money from advertisers after a longer time? Maybe we could yield for the time being, and slowly replace google with others by the time we get enough money from them, so we could restore our sex tropes.

September, it would help if you listened rather than talking. We can keep the Sex Tropes. We just have to segregate them from the rest of the site with an opt-in and/or NSFW notice, and they can't run Google ads.

@Fighteer: Oh so ninja'd and thank you.

Edit to add: We can speculate and play "what if" for hours and create increasingly more horrific scenarios and mourn our imaginary losses. Or, we can wait patiently while people figure out our options and then harness all of this energy to helping with the fix.

We never go any where without our swords and boas.
^^ Umm.. I know, that's what I'm talking about.

[up][up] Tried doing that as a joke over in Headscratchers. Got taken seriously despite bleeping all over the place, then dropping an F bomb right after.
But soft! What rock through yonder window breaks? It is a brick! And Juliet is out cold.

[up][up] September: your new avatar, while expressive, is not exactly the sort of thing we want any theoretical future Google auditors to be looking at. On the behalf of everyone, I'd appreciate it if tropers would restrict their displays of righteous outrage to the PG level we're going to be trying to maintain on the site.

I was not suggesting that the first option was a good idea.

What I'm wondering about are the forums: if the right hand side doesn't get to go where like half of its topics go and have Google Ads on them do we need to start with an extra layer of moderation? Do we have to set up the "R-rated" forums which don't have google ads? What of the issue of the right side forums getting expensive to run?
Don't just tell us the facts; tell us the memes, tell us the archetypes, tell us the catchy ideas and symbolic roles that get planted in pe

We are not running Google Ads on the forums at all. We'll use a secondary ad provider for those, as well as the other NSFW portions of the site.

If this causes the forums to become too much of a revenue drain, we might have to cut off some parts of the right side. (No loss to me, but I appreciate that a lot of people like them.)

That's why I said "as a joke." Poe's Law struck, and I had to hasten to explain what I had actually done in order to stop one person from panicking, because I could foresee it snowballing into a catastrophe of misinformation.

Re #426: Yes, that is a good plan. That is, we will run the alternative ad-network's ads on the 'isolated' pages and build the relationship over time.

The plan at present is that no pages will be lost. Some will just be behind a click-through "may not be family friendly" message.

Ditto for links headed off-site.

Would we no longer be able to link to NSFW tropes or work pages from SFW pages?

See Protocol 302. NSFW pages could still be linked, but you'd have to pass through a gate to get to them.
What's precedent ever done for us?

Oh, in that case 302 is a satisfying solution.

Especially if it can be solved to pass the gate only once per browsing. If I have to click on them every time I want to read a naughty trope, I will be angry.

Yes, I'm looking for excuses to be angry, so what?

Would quotes with swearing have that NSFW tag? I'm just thinking of internet reviewers like the Nerd or That Guy with the Glasses, even their main pages have colorful language from quotes.
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.

[up] Just like with everything else, it depends on the nature of the swearing. The Precision F-Strike is fairly well accepted in PG media, but the Cluster F-Bomb is most definitely not.

I hate to say this, but we may need to implement some auto Bowdlerization for people who don't opt in. Hopefully not, but we need some way to keep trolls from getting known and vandalizing The Care Bears with vulgarity.

I propose this plan be immortalized in an Administrivia page as FE 302, so we can point to it later when people ask questions. Seriously.

I see the Awesomeness.
Only members get to curse? And something that monitors the curse/other words ratio?

Only members get to post or edit, period, so the question of whether they are allowed to curse is kind of moot.

The point is that we need the following to comply with Google's requirements:

  • A clear means of opting in to NSFG content that requires registration.
  • Unknowns can only view SFG content (which may include Bowdlerized versions of pages if needed).
  • Unknowns cannot make any edits to the site.
  • Pages marked NSFG cannot be viewed without registration and/or opt-in.
  • Pages marked NSFG cannot carry Google ads.

Dang.
Well, it's better than not having the pages at all. It's a much better solution than the initial worries.
"Pages marked NSFG cannot be viewed without registration and/or opt-in."

Wait, where was this said? If those pages don't even have Google ads, why do they care who watches them?

Opting out of warning messages altogether and permanently should be no problem for Known Tropers.
