So I think silent films rock. What are your favorite silent films? And do you prefer dramas or comedies?

I prefer dramas, comedies can be good but most of them are a tad derivative. My favorites are of course from German Expressionism: Metropolis and The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari.

I really liked Pandoras Box with Louise Brooks. I also love Charlie Chaplins silent films. Of course Metropolis is on the top of the list as well. I guess for genre..it depends, because I like how in silent films they have to really work to set an emotion across without words for drama, while I also like how silent films take advantage of physical comedy.

I like Shorts. Their comfortable and easy to wear.

A watched Sunrise a while back. It was exceptionally well made, but suffered from major values dissonance.

Me, I go for silent horror films. For example? Call Of Cthulhu, a fan-made Retraux adptation of the HPL short story. It might be my favorite adaptation, and the best use of Alien Geometries in any movie I've seen. Also, for some reason, I've never finished Nosferatu, should probably get to it.

The Kid has always been a favorite of mine. I pretty much like all of Charlie Chaplin's films, and though I haven't really seen much of Buster Keaton, I've liked what I've seen. Sherlock Jr is a good one of his.

bumps year old thread shamelessly

I'm actually going on a silent film binge myself now after seeing Hugo. My personal favorites so far are The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, Sunrise,The General, and of course, Metropolis...

The Artist is out right now. It could be the first silent film since 1927's Wings to win Best Picture.

I like trippy stuff like Caligari and Nosferatu. Watching them without sound always adds to the atmosphere.

Would I sound crazy if I predicted a slight revivalist movement of Silent Era films? I mean, last year Metropolis was one of the best selling DV Ds for silent films in years, The Artist is showing signs of being the first silent film to win best picture since Wings, Hugo was dedicated to remembering the old classics, etc. I wouldn't put it past people in our generation, seeing as we seem to be reviving everything nowadays. Maybe we'll pick back up on silent films and re-explore them in ways that nobody would have dared to in the 1920s....

Or maybe I'm just a dreamer, idk.

I watched some silent films during my horror movie marathon in October. The Call Of Cthulhu, The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari, The Phantom Of The Opera, Nosferatu...all great stuff.

I'm interested in seeing some comedies, I should get onto that.

Now that I think about it, the only silent I've watched in its entirety is Modern Times. This clip up through 1:30 is the most "Oh my God, this is my life!" thing I've ever seen in a movie:

I watched The Black Pirate recently, it was pretty good. It's not seen enough despite being on the National Film Registry and available online*

, on IM Db it's only got around 700 votes. If you have an account there i recommend you watch and rate it.

I like Buster Keaton shorts. And Metropolis is, simply put, a masterpiece.

A little while ago, I was thinking about those little animated shorts that have become popular in the last decade or so (like the ones that Pixar does). Almost none of them have words, and a lot of them are at best about as long as the really early silent films, like the ones that Melies made. Those shorts have more of a focus on the visual appeal, but there are also a lot of elements that bear striking resemblances to older silents. Just thought it was kind of interesting.

And if I claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that I don't know.

Comedies of course. In exciting news, I shall be able to get community service credit doing something I love, in a silent film museum that is relatively close! The people there were so happy that a young person like me is so enthusiastic!
