You can make a good action manga while letting the female characters take most of the action roles, Saber Marionette J is a good example of that.

I think harem series tend to suffer when they are all about fighting with the harem as an afterthought or all comedy with little to no action. Negima suffered as a story when the fighting got most of the pagecount because, while Akamatsu is good at moderate levels of action, he isn't really made for long stretches of action adventure plotting and his forte is on character interaction. On the other hand, once Tenchi Muyo made Tenchi an unbeatable god and focused on boring slow comedy with tons of pointless space elite characters playing childish games of political stratagem that series lost its charm.

Similarly, To Love Ru would have benefitted from more action instead of becoming the Rito Falls on Women, Randomly Bares and Sucks Their Breasts, Wash Rinse and Repeat show. Hell, even this very same ending wouldn't look as bad if it had come after vanquishing some actual big final foe, because that would at least provide another sense of story closure.

I prefer Dx D because Issei is able to be as much his own character that isn't a stereotypical boring Nice Guy like Rito, and still be able to treat his Harem equally.

Not to mention, Rito chickening out on the Polygamy aspect at the end really made me feel like The writer tied to cop out at the last minute, just like most other Harem authors (Except Ishibumi) do nowadays.

At least in Tenchi Muyo, regardless whether he became an invincible god and the other beings just did wacky hijinks after, at least his creator confirmed that he would be marrying them all, unlike the modern Harem Genre trappings that follow Love Hina instead.

The final chapter's final page listed two bonus chapters.
I know they're coming out, I was questioning a claim as to what they're about.

[up][up]Love Hina actually had a proper, non-copout ending, though.

Mostly I think harem series, and sometimes romance in general, are often much too afraid of Shipping Bed Death, or committing to anything at all. I'd say that's one of the few things Sword Art Online actually did right. Well, sort of, considering there's still a lot of pseudo-harem stuff.

Yeah, there was no "last-minute cop-out". They were copping out from pretty early on, not following things up like the threat from Gid, forgetting what other-than-nice traits Rito had, all other males becoming rare sightings, and every girl falling in love with him when they could have contrived the fanservice in other ways. Early on they would subvert some harem clichés, then played Accidental Pervert straight into the ground, exaggerated it to the point of being a little funny then drove that into the ground again.

The only ways I'll credit them with going against cliché is that Rito's niceness isn't an Informed Trait, he is genuinely self-sacrificing, and Mikan's development. She went from a discount tsundere to the two being comfortable with their bodies, something woefully rare in the genre. Otherwise they challenged the censors, but not their audience.

And I've been watching some of the animated episodes, the changes are quite surprising in a medium that often adheres slavishly to the source material. Though it's a toss-up whether the end result is any better. And an intro that is all bouncing breasts is too much even for this stuff.

[up] Mikan's Rito's sister, who is not a tsundere. Are you mixing her up with Yui or Yami?

Well, she does find her brother in bed with naked girls on a regular basis, so she has some reasons to be irritated.

People are often quick to call any character tsundere the moment they display one positive and one negative mood towards one character, regardless of reason.

I was referring to how she would berate him for apparent perversion. She had a tsun reaction to anything sexual, just less impulsive and more normative. Then after some machinations by Nemesis she became the only girl Rito is physically comfortable with, while Yui and Yami kept their angry paybacks until the end.

Otherwise, she's the calmest and wisest of the cast.

Bumping because the first of the bonus chapters is out.

It looks like Nemesis likes to read To Love-ru. I wonder if she finds it to be super interesting.

Oh. And they're finally doing the "clone the protag" plot that turns up in doujins all the time. I don't think that's what people had in mind when they though of a harem ending. XD

I do lots of stuff. The real question is am I any good at that stuff.

Rito and Haruna might be the only couple that's still on Last-Name Basis in the freaking epilogue…

Seven Seas sells their stuff in Canada, y'know. So it should be fine in Canada, dunno about Australia.

Anyway, checking Australian Amazon gives me only Kindle versions of their stuff. You'll need to import, but don't go getting yourself arrested.

Hmmm... I guess I'll just wait and see if they'll release the manga here then. I would like to point out that the anime adaptation is sold here in Australia legally. I guess I'll just wait a month or two for any news about To Love-ru from Madman.

Sorry for the double post but the last bonus chapter (and the last chapter of To Love-ru for now) has been translated.

And thus the story ends with all women in danger of being Rito'd. At least Run doesn't seem to mind. XD

I guess that all that is left for the Western To Love-ru fans is to wait for the manga to come out.

Well it's been quite the ride. I may of gotten into the series at the eleventh hour but I must say that for me personally it was a series worth getting into.
