Western Sci-Fi vs. Eastern Fantasy RPG Signups:

Elite Soldier
Okay, this might be a bit crazy, but here I go...

So I've got this idea in my head, a forum play-by-post RPG that depicts a war on a fictional future Earth that is split right down the middle between science and technology or magic and mysticism. As You Know, I'm a pretty big fan of technological advances and would rather have a plasma rifle than a spell book. Here's the set up:
  • On opposite sides of the world, two philosophies began to rise up above all others. In the East, pagan religions like Shinto became immensely popular, and all kinds of mysticism established themselves as the norm. In the West however, atheism ousted traditional religion, and science became the accepted ideology. Japan, China, Southeast Asia and most of Russia on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains formed into the Eastern Alliance, a theocracy built around various beliefs and religions but all united behind the common belief that harmony with nature is what all humans should strive toward. The Americas, Western Europe, Africa and Western Russia(west of the Urals) coalesced into the Western Federation, a republic well-known for its futuristic cities and advanced weapons.
    • Militarily, both sides are roughly equal. The Western Federation favors technology; as such, their infantry units are equipped standard with deflector shields, aircraft and armor are common, and most weapons are energy based and ranged. By contrast, the Eastern Alliance relies upon magical abilities; their units require casters to maintain defensive lines, and vehicles are less common though not unheard of.
    • The primary differences in abilities are that the WF are more mobile and well-protected, while the EA are more potent overall in damage output at the expense of durability and speed. To compensate, the EA has powerful summons at their disposal, allowing them to bring forth massive mythical beasts. The WF can match this, however, through the use of their space fleet, but said fleet is not invulnerable: the EA have their own space programs and ballistic missile systems, capable of destroying the fleet.
      • In a one-on-one fight between equal units, it all really comes down to who shoots first: the WF have snipers and covert operatives able to attack silently at range; but the EA has powerful offensive and defensive magic, able to conceal just as effectively as any WF cloaking system.
        • In-depth details about each sides' capabilities will be discussed just prior to the opening of this RP. This is mostly just to establish the setting.
    • Each side has a distinctive appearance:
      • The WF takes heavily from Star Wars, Mass Effect, Halo, F-Zero, etc. etc.
        • Energy weapons are standard issue amongst the WF soldiers: laser rifles, plasma rifles, laser pistols, plasma pistols, electromagnetic acceleration guns, etc. etc., though rocket weapons are also commonplace, mostly homing missile systems. Vehicles range from drop ships and APCs to space carrier-battleships and tanks of all stripes.
      • The EA's appearance is taken directly from fantasy JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc. etc.
        • Few firearms are found in the EA, though most citizens have at least basic magic skills and training. The few firearms that are issued to the front are very outdated, late 20th or early 21st century tech. Rockets are used in small numbers, mostly unguided types. Vehicles are rare as well, mostly basic cars and trucks; but they make up for this with their magical powers enabling some to stand against even the most destructive weapons... for a time, at least.
  • Players will be generals in command of armies, giving orders to units in the field. Each player is given one specific Area Of Operations, or AO, that they share with an opposite number on the other side of the battle. The challenge here is to out-think the other player: You must know what your side is capable of, what the other side is capable of, and then determine a battleplan intended to exploit their weaknesses while emphasizing your own strengths. All kinds of tactics, including flanking, surrounding and the good old-fashioned Zerg Rush are all potentially viable, some more than others in certain situations.
    • The WF's high technology extends to their communications equipment and each soldier is equipped with an advanced heads-up display to maximize efficiency in the field. The EA mostly uses magical communications, meaning officers in the field are the ones responsible for relaying orders to the ground and making the EA's armies slower to react to orders or changing battle scenarios.

Just list your handle, the name of your general and your allegiance. I'll serve as GM for this. We'll use 1d6 in a manner almost identical to Roll to Dodge to determine the outcomes of each battle.

EDIT: Current list of Generals:
  • Western Federation:
    • General Robert Wilkes, 125th Strike Division, stationed in Iraq (played by Flanker66)
    • General Edwin Krause, 1st Infantry Division, stationed in Germany (played by Catfish42)
    • General James Damon, 501st Armored Division, stationed in the Middle East (played by Deadbeat Loser 22)
    • Admiral Alex Johnson, 1st Pacific Navy and 1st Marine Division, stationed on the American West Coast (played by Liirian)
    • General Ian Fulton, 343rd Rapid Deployment Division, stationed in France (played by Makuta9999)
    • General Angoni Tzu, 502nd Covert Operations Division, stationed deep cover in Japan (played by Plumbum)
  • Eastern Alliance:
    • General William Tecumseh, 10th Assault Division, stationed near the Ural Mountains (played by Scholastica)
    • General Minami Yuuki, 101st Special Forces Division, stationed in Greece, Scandinavia and Italy (played by Daltar)
    • General Bohai Chao, 141st Special Assault Division, stationed near the Caspian Sea (played by Dreadnought)
    • General Shin Rhee, 108th Heavy Assault Division, stationed in the Middle East (played by Hydrall)
    • Admiral Serana Solaris, 5th Naval Fleet and 10th Marine Division, at anchor on Japan's East Coast (played by Shining Knight)

We need at least four per side.

EDIT2: Discussion thread. Game thread. The Eastern Europe campaign is underway!

In this so hard!

EDIT: Since you said that you favour technology, how will you prevent GM bias from being a factor?

Welcome to your command, General Wilkes. You are responsible for the Western Federation 125th Strike Division, the "Stray Dogs". They are the most advanced frontline unit on the field today.

Your AO is the Middle East: the 125th are stationed in Iraq right now, waiting for orders to advance north towards Russia. Right now, they're winning hearts and minds, trying to keep the Middle East from going over to the Eastern Alliance. Best of luck, General.

OOC: Maybe I won't be the best GM for this... I don't want a competitor to be GM, though. If you know anyone who might not hold a bias, Papa Mike me their name and I'll Papa Mike them to see if they're interested.

Cheers. I'm about to log off, so if you don't hear from me for a while, you know why.

EDIT: Well, you'd still probably want to play some part (even if it's only to make sure everything to stay in canon or whatever).

OOC: I'll stay in touch, just making sure it all follows according to universe rules, but beyond that, I think I'll play no part.

EDIT: OOC: For the record, I'd like to have at least sixteen players before we start off.

General Krause, your post is Germany. You're in command of the Western Federation 1st Infantry Division, which used to be known as the US Army First Infantry Division. Your mission is to prevent Eastern Alliance forces establishing a secure foothold in Western Europe.

The 1st Infantry are well motivated and well equipped. Good luck.

Well, now, this hardly seems fair. 2 generals against none.

  • Handle: Mu Nu Xi (just "Mu" for short)
  • General Name: Yoru Munen (me and names...)
  • Allegiance: Eastern

But i think 16 players right off the bat might be a bit too much to ask for.

Good day, General Munen. You are in command of the Eastern Alliance 10th Assault Division. It has the highest concentration of extremely skilled mages in the entire Alliance.

They are well trained, battle hardened and absolutely loyal to the cause. Command them well.

Your area of operations is the area just east of the Ural Mountains. The 10th are awaiting orders to advance on Moscow. May the Gods be with you.

OOC: Okay, eight. At a minimum. I want this to be interesting from the start.

If the Western Federation Army can acquire two more generals, they're all set for the first phase of the upcoming war.

However, the Eastern Alliance Army still needs three more. Only after each side has four generals can we commence the engagement.

EDIT: Going afk for a while. Don't start without me!

... but please do keep signing up. Please?smile

Discussion thread.

Catfish42 and Mu Nu Xi, report to that thread. We need to discuss each side's weapons and abilities in specifics before we can begin.

General Damon, you're in command of the 501st Armored Division, the most powerful heavy armored unit in existence.

Your AO is the Middle East, in support of the 125th Strike Division commanded by General Wilkes. Your forces are to support the 125th in any way possible.

OOC: However, we still need more players for the Eastern Alliance, and we lack a Game Master.

Yeah, really. It looks like it'll end up as 3 on 1, at this rate... Which honestly, might be pretty interesting, if we somehow balance it out properly.

I think the problem is that we're not really "reaching out" to people who may be interested in playing the East.

Not sure how we'd remedy that, however.

This is all Decade's fault.
Since I think the two Middle Eastern units are effectively mothballed for story purposes until the balance gets restored, I think we might be good for now.
"Momo-Ura-Kin-Ryuu! Climax Form!"

OOC: I want this to be evenly matched. I said that they are supposed to be in the OP.

That means that we need more people who would be interested in leading an army of magi and bishonen swordsmen.

And yes, the two divisions in the Middle East are off-limits until we find more people for the Eastern Alliance.

It was a bit of a toss up for me, but I went with the Western side for reasons I'm not entirely sure of yet. It may have been a bad idea, but I've got no plans to backtrack right now.

On the topic of JRPG fans... <(cough)
