Tarol put up a few tweets about Complains' and Thaco's personalities a day or two ago that ties into this...slapping them together:
Thaco on the other hand, is the opposite. He always DOESN'T do *it*. He sits back and takes no action. Thaco didn't argue when he was told to not be chief, even though he was supposed to be chief... and his psychological burn on Dellyn was accomplished by simply doing nothing and walking away. And as a Father, he doesn't really do anything, which is a bit rough on Complains.

I thought that Complains was talking about some past event rather than the recent demise of Chief. That said, "character is stopped during murderous rampage and has breakdown over present trauma" is no less cliché.

What's weird is that he seems to be going back to the well of "these are characters being played by players in an external universe" jokes, which seems patently unlikely in context.

Not necessarily. There's a mechanics joke, sure, but Fumbles is used for mechanics jokes and the goblins were never indicated to have players.
