Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] for Delmar. Not sure on Qualen. I have to find more information on him first.

...It's weird having so many websites and no way to properly display now, lol.

  • Cliffhanger: Delmar is the most sadistic terrorist in Eric Qualen's gang. Unlike Qualen, who is motivated by greed, Delmar is a Terrorist Without A Cause. When two teenagers are there to do base jumping, Delmar opens fire on them and chuckles when his fellow terrorist, Kynette, shoots one of them and hands Kynette over a weapon to kill another one. In a later scene, Delmar sadistically guns down Frank, who was trying to help him and other terrorists, thinking they were people in need. He later tortures Hal using him as a soccer ball in order to practice his kicking technique.

So Delmar has the murder of the two teens, the murder of Frank, and the torture of Hal? 3 murders plus torture? That may JUST be enough to push him into CM territory, but barely.

Well correct but the murder of the two teens. He just watches in amusement and ands over weapons (which is still heinous in my opinion). It was another terrorist who shot one of the teenagers while the other teenager escaped. But he is certainly a CM.

He seems bad, but CM-level bad? Though considering his Ungrateful Bastard-ness to Frank, and his attempting to murder the teens, I'll give him a VERY slight [tup]. This may be one of those cases where he JUST does enough to put him into CM territory, but only barely.

Now that I think of it, Qualen might also qualify. We've qualified many characters who were leaders before.

  • Adam from Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter when it was his sister who murdered Lincoln's child.

  • Top Dollar and Judah Earl from The Crow even if their minions committed most of the crimes.

  • Zaysen from Rambo when his minions committed most of the crimes too.

So I think we can qualify both Qualen on a large scale, and Delmar on a more personal scale. Delmas counts because most of the terrorist don't do anything really other than being Jerkasses. He is the most sadistic and does MOST of the heinous things.

Probably depends on whether Qualen ordered Delmar to do most or all of the stuff, or if Delmar did it For the Evulz.

Shooting Frank and torturing Hal was For the Evulz but shooting teenagers was under Qualen's orders. Qualen also murdered his lover so he could be the only pilot.

Here is a rough draft write up for The Evil Spirit Of Darkness:

Edit: Also, anyone else have any opinions on Alex Wesker? I am not sure if she measures up to her foster brother.

Btw, it seems we have a decent Film!Light writeup at the main Film page. Do I need to do anything there?

Alright, as the Vykos discussion just kinda...ended, here's something of a rewrite for Vykos:

  • Sascha Vykos, born Myca Vykos, is a monster whose legacy dates back to 11th Century Constantinople. Sired by the Tzimisce Symeon, Vykos eventually destroyed his sire by repeatedly consuming and regurgitating him before a final act of draining him to death. Changing his gender and taking the name 'Sascha,' Vykos became a major figure in the monstrous Sabbat so that she is feared even by her monstrous Clan. Vykos invents new tortures, having perfected them upon countless unwilling victims whose agony she can prolong for years to centuries, alternating it with incredible pleasure to make the victim unsure if it is experiencing torture or rape. In modern times, Vykos plays a major role in the war for the United States East Coast, using her fellow Sabbat as cannon-fodder or torture victims when she's bored. One luckless failed assassin is reshaped to her servant, tortured and broken so she may experiment with how loyal she has made him. With a thousand year reign of horror, an insatiable hunger for knowledge and an unspeakable appetite for torture, Vykos is the one who shows the rest of the Sabbat what it truly means to be a monster.

  • Mad Max: Fury Road: Immortan Joe, the villain of the film, is a brutal tyrant who has forged a kingdom in the Wasteland. In the prequel comic, it is revealed Joe was a marauder who murdered others for their supplies, enslaving the women and killing the men and children. Upon founding his kingdom, Joe selects people to join it, but forces the women to become breeding slaves so their milk may be harvested, and the men to run along treadmills to power the turbines. Joe indoctrinates the strong young man into the Warboys: drug addicted cultist fanatics who long to die in his cause. The most beautiful women are kept as Joe's personal sex slaves and forced to bear his children. After three failed attempts at bearing a healthy boy, they find themselves exiled to certain death in the desert wastes. When his wives escape, Joe spares no resource to hunt them down and return them, though he is willing to kill one rather than allow her to be rescued. Tyrant, cult leader, rapist and monster, Joe is the living incarnation of the worst the Wasteland has to offer.

Killzone rewrites:

  • Jorhan Stahl takes the reigns of de facto leadership of the Helghast after Scolar Visari's death. A weapons manufacturer who tests his newet weapons on captive prisoners of war, Stahl uses his men as expendable pawns. After murdering his chief rival gleefully, Stahl makes preparations to bomb Earth and leaves his own armies to die. Surviving the conflict, Stahl makes plans to intitiate 'The Terracide' on the chief human homeworld to kill anything with human blood, even members of his own species. Backing terrorism, murder and genocidal science, Stahl repeatedly shows his only loyalties are to himself and his twisted greed and notions of strength.
  • Vladko Tyran, leader of the Black Hand, a Helghast terrorist group, is introduced via a massive terrorist bombing aimed at soldiers and civilians alike. Tyran has human hostages taken and orders them executed while loading captured trains with explosives and sending them to the city to kill as many people as possible. Tyran functions as Stahl's chief subordinate to pull off the Terracide, viewing humans as inferiors who deserve nothing less than extermination while attempting to shatter the peace between Helghat and human to send both sides in a brutal, pointless war. Tyran vows not to stop until "the streets run red" with human blood.
  • Dr. Hilary Massar is a human being who views the Helghast as 'superior' species and believes the inferior must be annihilated. Using her scientific genius, Massar experiments fatally on innocent beings to develop a plague that will kill everything of Terran blood, no matter how small. Massar relished the point when it would be destroyed, killing all humans except for herself.

I'm late to the party, but [tup] Immortal Joe. And yes, for those of you who haven't, go see Mad Max: Fury Road. Is the movie overhyped? Yes, it is.

FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS.cool

Also I forgot who, but someone mentioned Paul Bettany's character from the movie Firewall. Another one those "haven't seen it in years" movies, but he gets an automatic [tup]. Guy killed two of his own men—one of whom for no reason, the other for a petty reason, kidnapped and tried to murder a man's family, cared very little for any of his fellow minions, and shot an innocent man in the back of the head. And he made Harrison Ford fire Chloe O'Brian.

I would like to nominate Injun Joe from Tom And Huck.

Who is he and what does he do?

Injun joe, along with Muff Potter, is hired by Dr. Robinson to dig up the grave of One~Eyed Murrell (I don't think it's ever explained why the doctor wanted the grave dug up). The three men discover that a treasure map was buried with Murrell, showing where he hid his stolen loot. When Dr. Robinson decides to keep the map for himself, Joe knocks out potter, takes his knife while he's out cold, and stabs the doctor to death, before stealing the map and leaving the unconscious Potter with the doctors corpse and his knife covered in the doctors blood, framing him for the murder. In the morning, Joe lies and says he saw Potter kill the doctor, attempting to get Potter hanged (wouldn't the killing have been second degree, which is NOT punishable by death?). When Tom testifies that Joe is the true killer, Joe vows to kill him. Joe kills his partner in crime Emmett for trying to take all of the treasure for himself. When Joe goes to hide the loot in the caves, he finds Tom and his girlfriend Becky in there, and chases after them (it is unclear if he would have killed Becky since he only had a grudge against Tom, but she would have been a witness and he clearly has no problem murdering children, so I say it's likely). Tom gets Becky out and stays behind to find the treasure, he finds it but Injun Joe reappears and prepares to kill him. Huckleberry Finn appears to try and save Tom. Injun Joe challenges Finn to a fist fight and easily gains the upper hand. Injun Joe is about to kill Finn when Tom throws the treasure chest into a chasim. Joe tries to retreave it and falls to his death.

Is he bad enough?

Well he kills two adults (his partner and the doctor), frames one man and attempts to get him hanged, and tries to kill 2~3 children (Tom, Huck, and possibly Becky).

Also any more votes for Qualen and maybe Delmar even if the latter seems nearly confirmed to count? I will provide a writeup for Qualen if no one objects.
