Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

We've got enough votes for Milady, so all that's missing now is a writeup.

The bad guy from that Swedish revenge film Thriller: A Cruel Picture also needs a rewrite still.

So to conclude the latest list of examples I brought up:

On Kindred, I'd rather they do an effortpost first. Goth seems like an obvious keep from what we've been told, but the other two need more information and context.

For The Bill, I don't think Tom Chandler qualifies. His death scene is fairly ambiguous. From what I've read and seen elsewhere he married the women he's keeping hostage there and later forced himself on her, and tries to kill the unborn child. While he states he couldn't care about the baby, he does express remorse if he were to kill her and accepts that he's going to hell for the things he has done, and kills himself instead of his wife and/or kid. As apparently the vilest character in the series but retaining redeeming traits, I doubt the other contenders would stack up to the bar he sets.

Terry Clark from Underbelly NZ: Land of the Long Green Cloud is another interesting case. Underbelly is basically one of those season-long anthology shows, with Clark appearing in two of them. He's a murderous drug dealer and a total sleaze with an even bigger bodycount than the example states, but the original does show a shred of humanity in him in that he genuinely loves his (dead?) son and his wife.

Here's a rewrite for Bob Underwood—he's a good qualifier.

That only leaves Day of the Triffids. Did you also get a chance to see that John Woo film with the Vietnamese Colonel, Lightysnake?

[up]I'm watching the original Underbelly right now. I'd be very surprised if anybody from the sequels qualified, unless they've abandoned the style of the original—which went out of its way to show everybody's human side.

So it looks like Uncle Johnny from the Creepypasta Play With Me is a keep, here is a rough entry I written for him.

  • Out of all the supernatural monsters in the Creepypasta mythos, one human stands out in Johnny the uncle and murderer of Sally Williams. Johnny is a pedophile staying with at Sally's house, and paints himself as a nice and fun guy after his divorce, which he says gives him more privacy. On the first night of the stay, Johnny molests Sally, and gets mad at her when she tries to tell her parents, even when they didn't believe her. Without a second thought, Johnny takes Sally to an abandoned playground where he rapes and murders her. Before doing the deed he tells Sally it's her fault for not "playing the game" right. Cruel, perverted and sociopathic, Johnny is nothing more then a monster taking advantage of his families trust, and won't hesitate to hurt them.

One thing I might have missed, but if the Creepypasta examples are keeps, are they going to the Web Original monster page or the fan work page ? Because I heard something about Fan work, and while most Pasta's are mostly driven by the fan community, they did originate from the web after all. And another thing, since I don't see much nay's of the Red Dead Revolver example, I decided to give a second write up.

  • Before he became the Governor, Griffon was the partner of gold miner Nate Harlow, the father of Red Harlow. After an encounter with General Diego, Griffon doesn't hesitate in selling out Nate and his family for Nate's half of the gold and his own life, getting Nate and his wife killed. As Governor, Griffon and Diego are running an illegal gold mine using slave labor and when an American soldier tries to report this to the Governor, Griffon not only admits that he's in one it, but he has the soldier kept prisoner. He also tries to by Annie Stooke's ranch and when intimidation doesn't work, he simply sends his men to burn her farm down and kill her. Later at the Battle Royal, Griffon recognises Red and attempts to have him killed. When confronted at the end, Griffon says he regrets not being there when the Harlow's where killed, so he can make sure Red joined him and attempts to take this "second chance" to gun him down.

Underwood writeup looks good. [tup]
It says Griffon sells out Nate to Diego to save his life, yet later works with Diego? I'm not too sure he's heinous enough personally.

The Creepypasta examples might go under the Web Original heading, if it's an original Creepypasta and not one based on a game or anything. However, since they are shared on the Internet, then they might all go under the Web Original page.

[up][up]That's pretty significant, but there is this:

  • When Milleniummon was destroyed, his data turned into Dark Spores and one buried itself into Ken's neck, exerting its influence on him. Since then, it grew within Ken and was later harvested and implanted into other children by Yukio Oikawa, meaning that Milleniummon is so evil that his data can corrupt anyone and turn them into insane and hateful beings.
BTW, would Yukio or Apocalymon count?

Yukio Oikawa is probably the most tragic Anti-Villain in the franchise, so hell no.

As for Apocalymon, he's literally Made of Evil in that he was created through all the pain and suffering that Digimon endured during the process of natural digivolution, thus he feels nothing but pain, sorrow, and emptiness, making him want to lash out and take it all out on the universe. In fact, he acknowledges this nature and is sad about it too. So he's a rare example of a villain who absolutely cannot be redeemed being played for tragedy.

@ 29450, I brought up 2012 Rat King a couple of times, I think some people voted [tup] for him, while others want to wait and see with him.

I think you can make an argument he meets the heinous standard, considering he Mind Raped Splinter a couple of times and is involved in human experimentation: he turned his own colleague into a mutant gorilla and wanted to turn bunch of random civilians into rat human hybrids. Though his first attempt to create a human rat hybrid released a disfigured immobile creature that seemed to be in constant pain, but that did not seem to deter him from trying to continue his experiments. Also among the civilians he kidnapped were a little girl and a couple of teenagers. I think the combination of Mind Rape and human experimentation puts him over the top. He also seems to lack any humanizing characteristics.

I don't mind waiting on him, but when we last saw him, he seemed to suffered a Disney Villain Death, so I don't know if he is coming back any time soon, villains in cartoons and comics survive that kinda thing often enough, but it he could be gone for a while, if he ever returns.

Realistically how long should we wait on Rat King, it doesn't seem like he has an ongoing story arc that could redeem him and I don't think he has ever gotten a real sympathetic trait in all his appearances (most of the other villains have). However he could return and do something else that is vile, so I guess you could argue waiting has its benefits.

Also since the vote on Kleiser seems split, I will just leave him be, unless anyone else wants to offer an opinion.

Here is another possible candidate from a creepypasta: Randy from Jeff The Killer.

Randy was the leader of a trio of bullies, along with his two friends Keith and Troy, and he was the one responsible for Jeff becoming a serial killer. When Jeff and his little brother Liu went to the bus stop to go to school, Randy, Keith and Troy ambushed them. Randy revealed that the three of them mugged anyone who went to take the school bus, and demanded that they give them their money. Liu tried to fight them but Keith pulled a knife on him and forced him to hand over his wallet. When Jeff stood up to them and demanded that they give his brother back his wallet, Randy pulled out his own knife and asked "What will you do?" Jeff broke Randy's nose and wrist, stabbed Keith in the arm, and punched Troy so hard he threw up. The three bullies lied and said that Jeff and Liu attacked them first. Liu took the blame to protect Jeff and was sent to Juvie for a year. Two days later, Randy and his gang attacked Jeff at a party. Randy was unsatisfied with getting Liu sent to Juvie, and wanted to kill Jeff. Randy had Keith and Troy pull guns on the other children and their parents, threatning to kill anyone who tried to interfere. Randy stabbed Jeff in the shouldere, smashed a bottle of alchoel over his head, and repeatedly kicked him in the face. Eventually, Jeff fought back and killed Randy, but Troy and Keith started shooting at him. Jeff ran upstares into a bathroom, followed by the two. Jeff killed Troy with a towl rack to the head, and Keith knocked Jeff into a shelf. Bleach fell on the two and scorched the both, and Jeff hit Keith in the side of the head with the towl rack. Just before dying, Keith let Jeff on fire. Jeff was horribly disfigured and driven insane from the near death experience, which resulted in him becoming a serial killer.

Being the leader of the three, I think Randy could qualify, he mugs other kids and threatens them with knives, gets an innocent person sent to Juvie, tries to kill the persons brother in a brutal way, and he has his friends thretan to shoot innocent bystanders.

Randy's got my vote for now, but I'm going to have to read the story again. I mean Jeff is a serial killer, so I'd say there needs to be a heinous comparison between the two.

As a warning, Sin City 2 will be out soon. Remmeber to use spoiler tags when we inevitably discuss whether to qualify Senator Roark.

Morgenthaler: Awesome, man. Let's cut Chandler and Clark and great Underwood writeup. I'll watch Heroes Shed No Tears when I can, too.

Sounds good for Uncle Johnny and Governor griffon, though I think Griffon had more crimes to add.

HT: What else does Millenniumon do?

For Rat King...I'll give a yes for now. And a yes for Randy, but what's the heinous standard?

I think the closest thing Rat King got to a sympathetic moment, is being upset when Splinter tossed one of Rat King's rats into a pit. That may seems like a humnaizing trait, until you understand how much Rat King relies on his rats just to function. Rat King is blind and but see through the eyes of any rat in presence and he was doing well against Splinter until the Splinter disposed of his pet rat, taking away one of his advantages against Splinter.

Rat King talked about how much he loves and admires his rats, his actions tell a different tale. He has no problem experimenting on his rats and while Splinter was hanging on ledge, Rat King sends a swarm of rats to knock Splinter into the abyss, not caring how many rats went to their doom.

Rat King was talking about how he and Splinter were kindered spirits, while Rat King was mind raping him to break his will and as soon as he realized he couldn't control Splinter, he tried to kill him. He seems like the least sympathetic villain in the whole show.

[up]Didn't Rat King have other rats he could use though?

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM Drafts

[up] Not really, he sent most of his rats to push Splinter off of a ledge he was hanging off of, sending most of them to their doom. After that attack the only rats around were Rat King's pet rat Aristotle and Splinter himself. Rat King was actually doing well against Splinter, the fact that Rat King read Splinter's mind meant that he predict every move Splinter made.

Splinter then knocks Aristotle off of the ledge, Rat King seems upset and Splinter comments that Rat King is now blind. Rat King retorts that he can still use Splinter's eyes to see. Splinter then puts on a blind fold, denying Rat King any kind of vision and proceeds to kick Rat King's butt.

Its hard for me to believe that Rat King really cared about Aristotle, since he needed him to see in that situation (I think using Splinter's own eyes as sight while trying to attack him would have pretty tricky) and considering the disregard he has shown for his rats in general, I doubt he cares for any of them.

That episode also presented Rat King as a major Control Freak, being very confident in situations were he was in control and being very nervous in situations where he wasn't, I think Splinter taking away his best pair of eyes in that situation likely rattled him.

If we're going for Rat King, I'm saying yes. I can actually believe Shredder might care for Karai. His Big "NO!" upon her getting mutated makes it plausible. It is possible he doesn't, but unlike with Rat King, it's questionable enough to consider. I think he is completely warped by jealousy, and he even blames the Turtles for the situation, promising to avenge her specifically.(I think he even uses the term avenge instead of revenge). For the record, I do not think it's very promising evidence for Shredder, but we still have more to the show to go at this point, so we don't know how the story'll end.

[tup] For Rat King, though. He's the worst person on the show that could have morals, imo. Also, as noted, if he comes back and changes, we can easily remove him. But as for now, his story arc appears over entirely, which is why I feel a vote can be done now.
