All haill Atroticus!
I saw the movie. Then I read the novels. And I realized something. Scott Pilgrim is...

  • A Coming-of-Age Story...
  • ...about a young male protagonist...
  • ...who's in a relationship with an unhinged girl...
  • ...and falls in love with his dream girl...
  • ...who has [a] jealous ex[es] with too many resources...
  • ...with lots of awesome fight scenes...
  • ...told in six parts.

Sound familiar?

Essentially Scott Pilgrim is FLCL set in Toronto with the Japanese sensibilities replaced with North American Gen X/Y ones and some character archetypes switched around (Scott the free spirit and Ramona the aloof one), but my comparison still stands. I'm not accusing O'Malley of plagiarism, but it's a very close inspiration. And when I compare one story with another, I'd much rather enjoy the far superior one.

Sorry, I just can't really come up with a situation wherein a person can buy/rent movies but can't buy/loan comics.

Well, about that, nobody here reads American comics. The only comic I ever found here was Watchmen and The Sandman, which were in my local university's library. Film, that's another story and there are enough rental store.

Manga and Manhwa rental store, on the other hand, in my town alone, there are over five of them.

I don't know where else to put this comment but doesn't this year's presidential election kinda remind you of Scott Pilgrim? Hillary as the cold, Unintentionally Unsympathetic Ramona, Ted Cruz was definitely the devious Final Boss(kind of)-type Gideon, Rubio as the twins, Lindsey Graham as Wallace and of course Bobby Jindal would have to be Matthew Patel.

[tdown] If nobody wants to talk about the similarities to Real Life that I think are interesting and I don't know where else to put, maybe WMG about Scott and Ramona's future after the movie. Like, do you think Ramona's going to stick with Scott or will she leave him too? Ramona seemed very fickle about him to me in the movie, so do you think he'll eventually get with Knives instead?

Okay, so here's the deal. It's not that we don't necessarily want to talk about real-world parallels. In fact, that would be kind of interesting.

The problem is there are precisely zero actual similarities in what you listed. You just attached random politicians to random characters. It's basically gibberish.

Anyhoo, trying to get this thread back on track... anyone read Seconds? Think that could make a decent movie? I know SPVTW was a bomb, but I don't know if it has enough cult classic success that another O'Malley work might see the screen. Even if it did, does anyone think it could be adapted? I think the Ground Hog Day loop elements could make a good movie, honestly.

That said, I really cannot figure out how it would be marketed.

I thought it was okay. Parts of it kind of rubbed me the wrong way, though. Or maybe I'm just remembering things wrong.

ZOMG TEH REI!!!!
I didn't realize this film had a thread! grin

Anyways, I gotta say that I really enjoyed this film, for similar reasons as to why I loved Speed Racer. Namely the over-the-top and cartoony nature, the lack of any semblance of realism, and the creative visuals. Not to mention that, though the characters were a bit unlike able, the story was still solid.

There's a kinda-important point in the comic that got left out of the movie: that Scott is the best fighter in the region. This is why he's able to take on so many powerful opponents.

I'm glad they left it out of the film, though, because its absence works with the video game feel of the movie. In cutscenes, Scott is just some schlub but as soon as gameplay begins, he suddenly becomes a bad enough dude to punch out demons and musical kaijus.

Also, anyone even considering making a live-action film based on an anime needs to watch Ramona versus Roxy a few times and take notes. The hammer, whip-sword, and anime physics of the fight are perfectly integrated with the reality of the film.

Indeed, this film is up there with the likes of The Matrix, Speed Racer, Pacific Rim, and Edge of Tomorrow in terms of films that are essentially "live-action anime".

The ending of the film was shit. Pairing Ramona and Scott made no fucking sense, especially when they already had shot the ending with him ending up with Knives Chau and it was perfect. And I'm not interested in any debate about that so don't start one. evil grin
