I thought I'd make one with a narrower focus than "all Gundam".
BIG SPOILERS

Did this not get more media because it was less popular than Wing or SEED, or was the story simply too complete?

What was Master Asia's motivation for telling Domon false, more villainous reasons for serving the Devil Gundam than his actual one?

Imagawa owns your soul by being able to give scenes as stupid as Fuunsaiki suiting up to save Domon and the Nether Gundams the same emotional impact as a serious story's Crowning Moment Of Awesome: Y/N?

The last two episodes symbolize Imagawa's belief that Westernization will make Japanese life happier: Y/N?

This was and still remains my favorite of the Gundam series because it is a fun Super Robot romp of fucking awesome. There is a horse mecha...piloted by...a horse. The horse has its own spandex suit even!

^ Fuunsaiki with his mecha and mobile trace may be the most joyously fun thing in all of anime.

So, as someone who has watched another series directed by Imagawa and really enjoyed it, does this series stand the test of time, and is it worth watching?

^ I've made friends watch both, and more than one has said G Gundam is the better story of the two.

It depends:

Do you like, or at least tolerate, wuxia?

Are you enticed by the idea of robot-piloting cyborg zombies spawned by Mecha-Cthulhu?

Does the idea of a German ninja piloting a giant, nation-themed robot not sound abso-fucking-lutely stupid to you (or at least makes up for that by also sounding kinda awesome as well)?

If so, you will probably enjoy G Gundam. (Sparkysharps loves the everlasting cheese out of this series, but she's also a raging Tomokazu Seki fangirl and thinks Sengoku Basara is totally awesome — so take her opinion with a grain of salt. One about the size of your head.)

One of my favorite scenes is Domon and Master Asia kicking a possibly 20 story building out of the ground while cueing in some Crowning Music Of Awesome G Gundam remains the only gundam I like

I literally used to say the whole "this hand of mine glows with an awesome power" speech along with Domon when I watched the show during its original Toonami run. I barely have the self-restraint not to do it when I rewatch it these days.

The this hand of mine speeches were such a shounen anime thing.

But Imagawa more than redeemed it with THESE HANDS OF OURS ARE BURNING RED!

G Gundam is very shonen and anime all around. These things just came with an extra dose of hotbloodedness back then.

^ What I mean is that shounen finishing moves and the words that go with them are usually heartless, formulaic things.

NOT IN G GUNDAM'S LAST EPISODE. grin

I loved all of G Gundam, especially the OVER-THE-TOP ENDING.

Looking back on it, it was almost like early Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in terms of ridiculosity.

What are your favorite things about G, besides Schwartz Bruder and the Devil Army zombies?

That would be a rather long list, really. The short answer would probably be "wuxia elements, Tomokazu Seki's awesome hotblooded screaming, hot-bloodedness in general, Master Asia, "THIS HAND OF MINE GLOWS WITH AN AWESOME POWER!" and the fact that it ends with Domon turning an Anguished Declaration of Love into a finishing move"

The long answer probably include every element of the series ever. "Tomokazu Seki's voice" would be mentioned at least eight times.

Tomokazu Seki and Nobuyuki Hiyama are amazing for the sheer amount of pure energy they can put into their voices. Seki absolutely owns any show he's in.

  • looks at Shining Gundam figure sitting on top of desk*

G Gundam will make you more of a man just by watching it (yes, even women). The over-the-top hot blooded-ness, the dramatic music, the crazy-ass Gundams...ah, memories.

I remember watching it on Toonami, and every time Domon would shout "Here I go!" before starting up the Burning Finger, I'd get a big smile on my face. Not to mention Master Asia...

"Only those with the courage to fight may join me. GOT THAT?!?!?!?!?!"

I heard Domon's voice actor is now an orthopedic surgeon.

Imagine that.

The G-Gundam corollary: for every mention of this series, anyone mentioning it will become Hot-Blooded.

It's Tomokazu Seki's role as Domon Kasshu that really propelled him to anime stardom. That, the awesomeness of the mecha and fight scenes, and the touching story really what makes G Gundam the series that really should represent Gundam in general.

Also, I think some of G Gundam's awesomeness needed to be put back in future Gundam series.

^Agreed. There's a reason why G Gundam is my favorite and not, say, Gundam Wing or Gundam 00 - G has white-hot passion blasting out of every orifice, and genuinely affects you as a result.

Wing and 00? Well, they're good, no question. But...well, their respective heroes can't hold a candle to Mr. Kasshu and the rest of the Shuffle Alliance.

I really didn't mind the Dub Name Changes for the Gundams much when I watched the show streaming but Burning Gundam instead of God Gundam is...stupid. Although Sunrise is to blame for that anyway.

^Personally, I can't imagine watching G Gundam dubbed. Nothing against the dub itself (never seen more than the Shining Finger Sword chant from that), but why would want to deprive yourself of the Hot-Blooded screaming awesome that is Tomokazu Seki?

Also, anyone else amused that Domon's voiced by Shuichi (AKA a man so uke-ish that people honesty forget they're watching a man in that series)? I swear to God that my brain broke upon that discovery.
