This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~Luc: I'll release your suspension. You've been a quality troper in general, but this habit of making major changes without discussion must stop.

Fighteer I am slightly confused by what you mean by personal edits I haven't edited anything since September so I am confused which edits were the problem?

~Sayla0079: You are correct that your editing history is infrequent. That doesn't have anything to do with the quality of your edits, which is uniformly poor. Someone noticed and reported them, and here we are.

Case in point, your last edit, on Gangland Drive-By:

  • This was how Sway in the X-men mini series Deadly Genesis lost her parents (her powers kicked in which saved her life from the bullets.)
This example does not link to any work article. At the very minimum it should have X-Men as a source, and a more specific one if that's available. The example is also written in past tense, which is incorrect. Wiki writing should use the historical present tense, only going into past tense when past events are being recounted from the perspective of the story.

Thus, if the example refers to events depicted in present tense within the work, it would be written as follows:

  • X-Men: In the miniseries "Deadly Genesis", this is how Sway loses her parents (her powers kick in, saving her from the bullets.)

If the depiction is in a flashback or expository reference to past events it would be written as follows:

  • X-Men: In the miniseries "Deadly Genesis", this is how Sway lost her parents (her powers kicked in, saving her from the bullets.)

The example could also use some context to establish what actually happens/happened, rather than just saying it did.

  • X-Men: In the miniseries "Deadly Genesis", Sway's parents are the targets of a revenge shooting by gang members. She survives only because her powers kick in, saving her from the bullets.

Then, on What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?:

  • This troper knows someone who got irate when his six and seven year old stepdaughters bought said candy cigerettes from the ice cream man (he got irate at the ice cream man for selling them to said kids)
This has awful grammar, but more importantly it is a personal example, violating both This Troper and our ban on Troper Tales.

All of your edits have problems like this.

~Ingridkishi: Your editing history shows problematic grammar — in particular, verb tense confusion of the sort that indicates that English may not be your first language. Moreover, you were sent notifications about this problem and did not respond, nor did you correct it. It's worth noting that your post there incorrectly used "repealed" when the correct word would have been either "released" or "appealed".

We require that all writing on our wiki meet acceptable standards of grammar and spelling. If you are uncertain, or would like help with proofreading, you may use our Help with English topic to solicit advice from your fellow tropers.

You're right, english is my second language. I promise I will improve my grammar, and use the link given to me in the future.

Okay, we can release the suspension, but if we see further grammar problems, we won't let you edit again until you demonstrate acceptable improvement in that help thread.

Certain rude PM's you recently sent came to our attention. I don't care who or what is getting under your skin; we have rules about civility for a reason.

I apologize, I wasn't in the right mind when I sent them. I was a bit upset because (and I'm assuming this was Targetmasterjoe you're referring to) was mocking this man who makes reviews named Erod, and Erod happens to be the uncle of one of my close friends. That does not justify my behavior and I apologize for losing my temper with Joe and making him afraid of me. I will PM him an apology if you'd like, and I promise I won't do this again.

I don't want to seem like I'm being impatient, but my anxiety is beginning to act up quite a bit about this. If you're all busy deliberating over my suspension, that's alright, I don't want to rush you.

I really apologize for the triple post, but my paranoia and anxiety was spiking and, even though this shouldn't be something that would lead to a full time suspension, I keep having that part of my brain that freaks out over everything and blows them into bigger problems whispering about this leading to a ban. I know that, unless I do something phenomenally boneheaded, that won't happen, but I'm still scared regardless. You all have things you're busy with, and I don't want to intervene in them at all. I'm about to go to bed soon, but I apologize not just to you, the moderators, but to Targetmaster Joe as well, for getting angry with him and letting that anger get the better of me. I hope that we can patch things up and never have this happen again.

[up]Let's be very transparent here. You are very active in the forums and troper community, and are very active in pointing out misbehavior. Despite that, you manage to accumulate forum thumps. And then you go and decide to be incivil over PMs. This behavior is galling and we are not here to follow you around and make sure you remember that civility rules apply not just to other tropers, but also to you.

This is your second time being suspended. A third time will see a permanent suspension. Understood?

~Neko Hybrid, if you are involved in an edit war, the proper thing to do is bring it to the attention of a mod, or ask for second opinions in the discussion page or on Ask the Tropers. If you're going to use PMs to talk it over with the other troper, great as long as you are civil. Mandating a "Now leave. It. ALONE." is not constructive or polite.

Are you trying to argue that your removal of Token Religious Teammate 3 times over two days isn't an edit war? Someone else's bad behavior is not an excuse for yours. You are responsible for adhering to the rules. You edit warred. If you don't understand how you contributed to an edit war, then we have no reason to let your suspension go.

If I had known about that one particular rule page, since there are so many, I would've done that.

My explained reasoning on previous post on why it's not relevant to put in still stands.

[up]An edit war is a problem because of behavior, not because of content. Questions of relevance are, frankly, bupkis. You can either promise to reform your behavior and use the proper channels when you are in a disagreement over an edit, or you can insist that you being right makes it permissible and stay suspended. Your choice.

Hello. I'm still relatively new to this site, so I'm not surprised I did something wrong. The list of editing rules seemed long and spread all over the place (ain't nobody got time for that), so I just decided to mimic what I saw other people doing in the trope pages. My reasoning was that whatever fate awaited my edits—be it staying up there or getting removed the next day— it was merited (although I now understand that relying on Wiki Magic does indeed make more work for other people than necessary).

I did indeed refer to "this troper" several times after seeing people do that, but I stopped after learning that particular rule. The same goes for several other rules. (I only just today learned of the Word Cruft rule, for example; I see that so often I actually thought it was how I was *supposed* to behave here.)

SO after having read the stuff linked to by What To Do If You Are Suspended , I would like to discuss my suspension. What exactly did I do wrong? something to do with absence of edit reasons?

~skadooshbag: Looking at your last few edits, I'm seeing grammar issues and a really bad tendency toward rambly, quasi-nonsensical additions that don't add anything of real substance to the pages, with what you put on Grey Goo being a prime example.
