I can take a look at it... It's good that she was able to give us a frame for our friend. It saves us the trouble of taking another approach to the problem... and I imagine I'll react better to him in a humanoid form, at the very least.

The staff (or, pair of sticks, at the moment—seems to snap together by strong magnets at the end) is smooth, well-crafted, and flecked with obsidian, but totally nonmagical or otherwise unusual, aside from its material being astonishing durable wood of some kind.

Sonya enters the temple cheerfully, only to step on a pressure plate. You can hear the groans of ancient machinery running from the floor to the walls...

Uh oh....

-grabs Sonya and pulls her back-

This staff isn't magical at all. Surprisingly strong, though.

Interesting. Temple Of Doom indeed. No way to undo it now, it's too big. Let's see what this one does, hmm? *Ears, eyes, and other senses out for the trap's effects, Fox prepares to release an earlier effect if the device turns out to be sufficiently dangerous, but stays well back from the triggered point anyhow.*

After about a minute of various groaning gears, a panel in the side of the wall creaks open slightly, revealing a small turret, from which a little sludge drools onto the floor. This would probably explain why the survivor didn't say anything about it.

A familiar, disturbing voice echoes from a tube in the ceiling.

I can't just leave you down there. For all the things you have done for me, it would be remiss if I didn't do this for you. And if I disable the nuclear reactor, that should turn off the mechanism and make it safe to remove you, right?
