Kyon: Big Damn Hero:

 13576 Mad Kitsu, Fri, 18th Jan '13 1:37:26 PM from Pursuiting a Trope-tan..
The Kitsune of Lunacy
So essentially, Kyon is kinda the equivalent to the golden rule of Magic: The Gathering? *
My mission: to gather all of the Trope-tans and make New Tropeia a tropey place.
Hello again! Let me see what I missed in the past few days.

@Filraen:

I'm confused about how to proceed with the profiles in the Character Sheet.

I mean, considering how well-known the main characters are and how seamlessly they evolve from the source material, probably a short explanation of how they deviate from their canon counterparts and how they develop during early chapters should be enough information to the average troper who only wants to know if he or she should give the story a shot.

But then again, I could be completely mistaken about that and people mind about spoilers more than me.

I tried to redact a few profiles but I always ended writing plot summaries or things similar to those back cover blurbs sad. For example:

Kyon:

After Nagato is slated for deletion by the IDSE, Kyon is forced to follow through with his own threat to the Entity by breaking The Masquerade to Haruhi and calling out the loyalties of the rest of the Brigade members to him, which they do, shattering the status quo to pieces and placing Kyon (again) as a centerpiece in a completely new game to all the factions involved.

Of course, when it rains in Kyon's life, it indeed pours. Not even 24 hours after the reveal, a slider called Michikyuu Kanae appears looking for him, as she knows by experience that Kyon and his Alternate Selves from other universes are likely to be willing to help her and most frequently are already involved with the supernatural (The Call really fancies the guy), while on the run from other three sliders seeking to capture her. And as if that weren't enough, the same day he discovered that his future self got himself mixed up in a shady albeit seemingly mundane situation involving Tsuruya-san and the Yakuza and he has to play along with the fact that he supposedly pressed Mori and the Organization to follow his lead on the matters related to Haruhi and the Tsuruya Family*.

In the face of so many challenges, the SOS Brigade has to grow into a more effective and closely-knit group and Kyon in particular has to take a more active role than before and call on the help of his friends, including but not limited to a de-powered humanoid interface who defected from her creators, an ESPer now estranged from his superiors, a time traveller whom for some reason her bosses put under Kyon's orders, a restricted but completely in-the-loop Reality Warper and a friendly slider who barely can use her powers at all.

To quote the man himself: "Oh, boy"...

I think I will have to step back on this one.

@Jason Ulloa:

Looks almost like Sasaki's cosplaying as Super Sonico with those headphones on.

Super Sonico? *tilts head*

*searching...*

すーぱーそに子 (Super Sonico / Suupaa Soniko)

The mascot character of "NITRO SUPER SONIC", annual live events held by the Nitro+. She made her debut in 2006 and she was designed by Tsuji Santa. She is the vocalist & guitarist of the band "Daiichi Uchuu Sokudo" (第一宇宙速度, First Cosmic Velocity) and the other members are Fujimi Suzu and Watanuki Fuuri.

Whoa, from what I can tell it's a pretty popular character and this is the very first thing I hear about it. So much for the popcultural osmosis sad.

Now you mention it, I wonder if Sasaki will wear cute cosplay outfits during club meetings. If so, I nominate Rita Mordio from Tales of Vesperia as a basis for one. I know nothing about the character, I just liked the fact the costume has a notebook and other tools typical of an old school detective/researcher.

@Eamil:

Thanks again for your work.

@thedarkfreak:

It seems I definitely need to rewatch the anime. The line "the laws of physics putting a damper on things" doesn't ring any bells. Could you elaborate a little about it? (via PM if it goes too much off topic).

Tropes question.

LL-6

It would be nice to join in on that, but Yuki was enjoying herself at the present, and could enjoy some further time with Kyon once he got back home and went to bed.

This counts as Accidental Innuendo/Does This Remind You of Anything?/None?

Random thought.

I just watched the first season of Black Lagoon (in the back burner for a very long while) and now I'm drawing very weird parallels between Shinobu and Roberta tongue.

Actually that was my thoughts when I added the first sentences to Kyon's profile: resuming his profile of the in Characters.Haruhi Suzumiya, just enough to have a idea of his character from the source material before starting with the events of the fic.

Exercise on getting three tropes other SOS Brigade members

In case of Haruhi: Reality Warper, Genki Girl and Masquerade

Mikuru: Time Travel, Moe, Neutral Female.

Yuki: Human Alien, Emotionless Girl, Sufficiently Advanced Aliens

Koizumi: Psychic Powers, Contemplate Our Navels, New Transfer Student

Tsuruya: Genki Girl, The Hyena, Cute Little Fang

But then again, I could be completely mistaken about that and people mind about spoilers more than me.

I tried to redact a few profiles but I always ended writing plot summaries or things similar to those back cover blurbs sad. For example:

I doubt anythinng you added for now counts as an spoiler nowadays.

Try to cut a bit the summaries and I'll add the half-a-paragraph introduction part.

For example, for Kyon it'd be like this:

Kyon

Deadpan Snarker extraordinarie, Secret Keeper of various supernatural factions, survivor and solver of an apocalypse or three, holder of Haruhi's leash and de facto leader of the SOS Brigade in matters Haruhi can't know. After Nagato is slated for deletion by the IDSE, Kyon is forced to follow through with his own threat to the Entity by breaking The Masquerade to Haruhi and calling out the loyalties of the rest of the Brigade members to him, shattering the status quo to pieces and placing Kyon as a centerpiece in a completely new game to all the factions involved.

 13579 Eamil, Fri, 18th Jan '13 9:03:00 PM from Somewhere over there. Relationship Status: Who needs love when you have waffles?
[up]&[up][up]If the intent is what Specular suggested about providing "enough information to the average troper who only wants to know if he or she should give the story a shot, " then speaking for myself, I wouldn't have liked to have some of those things spoiled for me if I were about to read the story for the first time. I'm too tired right now to take the time to write out an example myself (maybe tomorrow), but the main page manages to convey what makes the story awesome without really spoiling anything and I'd like to see the character page do the same. Keep it vague, basically - the main page covers a lot of the events of the first few chapters in a single sentence, the only real "spoiler" is revealing that The Masquerade is broken right away and you really can't describe the premise without mentioning that.

I'm admittedly very sensitive to even what most people consider minor spoilers, so take that for what it's worth. Just my two cents on that subject.

Edit: I looked back over this and realized I probably could've written out an example in the time it took me to write that post. My brain no worky tonight.

edited 18th Jan '13 9:12:07 PM by Eamil

@Specular: It's almost the very first line in the entire series, when Kyon's explaining that while he never believed in Santa Claus, it took him a while to realize that most of his other fantasies were also fake. (Or so he thought.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbAIxCE_NlI#t=0m50s

Also rather amused at the thought that, if Hanyuu counts as a ghost, then Kyon in K:BDH has met everything he says he wanted to meet, and more.

Also, would people thinking their future selves are jerks be a running gag now? We've got Kyon, Mikuru(well, she doesn't really seem to know, but Kyon certainly thinks so), Yuki, and now Fujiwara.

Tropes pages.

I added a few tropes to the main and characters's pages. About the The Dreaded vs. Terror Hero thing from a few pages ago, I simply went for the two of them.

@Filraen:

The profile's draft looks good to me. At this point I'm considering posting it as it is and let the Wiki Magic do the rest.

@thedarkfreak:

I think now I know why I didn't recognize the line. I never watched the dubbed version tongue.

Re. Future self = Jerk.

IMO, it became a Running Gag the moment Yuki remarked on the "insensitivity" of her future self.

Random thought.

How likely do you think the possibility of Sasaki figuring out about the Beta Harem is? I mean, if the Strong Family Resemblance was enough hint in Haruhi's case, how about Sasaki's?

Random picture.

It's just me or this outfit (SFW) is kind of kinky within the context of K:BDH?

Is that... um... Shion, wearing a greener version of Satoko's outfit? ...not sure where the kinky comes from, sorry.
@Silver:

No prob. It was just a silly thought I had when I saw the pic*. Hint: think about it from Satoshi's PoV.

If it helps, you can visualize it as the Higurashi cast messing with Satoko's head with the objective of provoking a "No. Just... No" Reaction from her.

Re: Characters profiles

Eamil, the point is where to draw the line for First Episode Spoiler: hmm... short yet informative, saying about the First Episode Spoiler yet only hinting at furre events...

After Nagato is slated for deletion by the IDSE, Kyon is forced to follow through with his own threat to the Entity by breaking the Masquerade to Haruhi about aliens, time travelers, espers and her own power, and calling out the loyalties of the rest of the Brigade members to him, placing himself as a centerpiece in a completely new game to all the factions involved.

Of course, when it rains in Kyon's life, it indeed pours. While he has to deal with a Haruhi who knows her own powers the threat of Haruhi's closed space still exists. Add a Mysterious Waif who appears to know him and the impending threat of the IDSE while still trying to keep test marks acceptable enough for his parents Kyon is forced to take a more active role than before, not only calling on the help of his friends.

To quote the man himself: "Oh, boy"...

Haruhi

Energetic leader of the SOS Brigade and (unknowingly to her) Reality Warper, Haruhi's wish of meeting supernatural people beings becomes true the day she receives a phone call from Yuki's home leading to John Smith revealing himself and using her own newfound power to save Yuki's life. However, things aren't like she expected them to be: time travelers being on a mission of understanding why the path to a further past is blocked while armed with several heavily enforced restrictions, humanoid interfaces who are in a similar mission but also with the threat of being deleted at any time, espers trying desesperately to save the world from the fickle whims of her own power. Now Haruhi must deal with all of that, her very volatile powers and the possibility of molding Kyon to her own wishes even without meaning it while still trying to "overloading the world with fun", as the full name of the SOS Brigade says.

Yuki

Stoic humanoid interface made my the Integrated Sentient Data Entity in order to observe Haruhi's power. Yuki is slated for deletion because, in eyes of the IDSE, she has become a liability to their existence. As a result, she replaces her connection to the IDSE with a direct connection to Haruhi. Her side of the story shows how she has to work full-time preventing Haruhi's power from getting out of control and development of the reason the IDSE declared her a liability: humanity.

Mikuru

Cute, shy and pretty girl serving as the mascot of the SOS Brigade. Of all the brigade members Mikuru is seemingly the least affected with the Masquerade being broken to Haruhi with her observation mission as time traveler remains unchanged. However, she doesn't know Kyon have already met her future self: a self-confident Plucky Girl whose objective is to preserve the future where she was born. Mikuru's tale is about how she grows into that future self without losing herself in the process and dropping her Neutral Female mantle by making her role as The Chick useful to the SOS Brigade.

Koizumi

Esper with very especialized Psychic Powers who gained entrance to the SOS Brigade as a New Transfer Student where he became a Yes-Man and second-in-command to Haruhi, Koizumi is left in a precarious position: sure, he gave promises to stay with the SOS Brigade if there were a confrontation with the Espers' Organization and pretends to keep his word yet he can't help but feel whatever emotion Haruhi feels, which influences his judgement constantly.

I'm not sure how to close Koizumi's section because his arc is way down the fic.

@Specular: While the exact wording might be different, I'm pretty sure a one-liner about the laws of physics was even in the original novel. I'd be surprised if it wasn't in the original anime.

EDIT: Ah, here we go. This is from a translation I have on my computer, I believe it's the Baka-Tsuki one before they took it down.

Two hours of intense staring didn't make my pencil move a single millimeter, and glaring at my classmate's head didn't reveal his thoughts to me, either. I couldn't help but get depressed at how normal the laws of physics were.

At the very least, it likely is a meta version of Be Careful What You Wish For.

@Filraen:

On the Running Gag "Future me is a jerk": should it be Other Me Annoys Me instead of I Hate Past Me?

It seems "Future Me Scares Me" is pretty much the catch-all trope for any personal issue a character could have with their future selves, even if the name suggests something more specific.

@Marq FJA:

<rolls eyes> Come on, it shouldn't be hard for a Yakuza Princess like her to order a custom-designed replica of the outfit.

It could be easier than that. According to one of "TIPS" (little intermissions included in the sound novel), Satoko and the rest of the girls of the "after-school club" got their uniforms from Mion, who apparently was planning on making a business out of used school apparel. Don't think about that too deeply.

@thedarkfreak:

@Specular: While the exact wording might be different, I'm pretty sure a one-liner about the laws of physics was even in the original novel. I'd be surprised if it wasn't in the original anime.

I think it was just semantics. The line "the laws of physics putting a damper on things" sounded different than "I couldn't help but get depressed at how normal the laws of physics were" to me at the time.

@Jbstormburst:

At the very least, it likely is a meta version of Be Careful What You Wish For

I'm not sure about that. However it seems like a strong candidate for Hilarious in Hindsight.

@Eamil:

Well, when he said "evil cartels/syndicates" I suspect he was referring to something a little more world-shaking than the Yakuza.

As Marq points out the Family is an example, but I would be more worried about the former members and backers of Koizumi's Organization. Besides the Tsuruya-gumi, which mostly wanted the Organization for money laundering, who knows what kind of plans they had in reserve for a Reality Warper like Haruhi besides Saving the World from her powers. Potential Villain Team-Up?

From Higurashi's side of things, maybe "Tokyo" could get some spotlight in the future. If they are still around, that's it.

I also wonder what kind of countermeasures the people of kbdh!Earth could offer against the Combine besides of what the SOS Brigade could offer. I mean, the Combine doesn't care about The Masquerade and they don't seem to have a particular interest in the Brigade besides Kanae, so they could end doing something that could attract the attention of some kind of Government Agency of Fiction, Ancient Conspiracy, N.G.O. Superpower, MiB, Heroes R Us or simply The Government.

Although, it wouldn't surprise me that some of these organizations would consider the SOS Brigade an equal or even a bigger threat than the Combine. It's simply more than enough power within the same group to make any global player nervous if not outright scared sh*tless.

[up]&[up][up]Jb said "prevalence" so I assumed he was referring to the Yakuza. The Family hasn't had that big a role before or after Sasaki's kidnapping, and the Organization as a whole hasn't had much of a role period besides playing hero support.
