Kyon: Big Damn Hero:

Saint of Asakuraism
Hey, don't sweat it, no harm done.

That example you gave almost comes close to seeming like a You Are Worth Hell moment. I'm not sure if it would qualify or not though.

Also, that picture reminds me, Haruhi's hair must be of a decent length by now. I know it hasn't been too long, but it's gone for a while without a mention, so I wonder just what length it's at now?
IMO, it doesn't qualify for You Are Worth Hell. The latter requires the involvement of a Fate Worse than Death.

About Haruhi's hair, according to Wikipedia human hair grows at a rate of about 1.25 centimeters or 0.5 inches per month. In SF-1 (around April 18th) Haruhi specifically requested a rate five times as fast as normal and considering that the current date in-story is Jun 17th, we can say her hair is around 12.5 cm. or 5 inches longer than the canon version. Although, how conspicuous this could be will depend on the hair style. Laying it down or donning a ponytail will naturally make it all the more obvious.

Edit: I'm the only one who is kinda expecting Haruhi or Mikuru deciding to change or simply play around with Kuyou's hair style?

Why not both at the same time? Now I'm wondering what effect a ponytailed Kuyou would have on Kyon. waii

Strange. I wonder why. But then I didn't catch why he removed most of the chapters to begin with. (I know why he stopped posting new ones there, just not why he removed old ones.)

edited 30th Nov '12 1:02:15 PM by Eamil

@Jason Ulloa:

Kuyou in a ponytail? That would give her a completely unfair advantage against Kyon. She would go from being "distracting" as in LL-5 up to "I'm sorry, were you saying something?" levels in a hurry and that's something I could totally endorse... which I'm not, honestly.

Jokes aside and considering her almost implausible hair length, I think it would be a shame to limit the options to just one hair style, even if I'm pretty sure she would look great in a ponytail (just a few examples*). Twintails or braids would be obvious alternatives or perhaps something more elaborated like this or this.

Also, while looking for the above I found this illustration, which made me wonder how Tsuruya would look cosplaying Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid. So far, I have only found two pics with this idea.

Re. Chapters in ffnet.

IIRC, ffnet contained a version of the story slightly different from the one stored in the official website, which went through several rewrites, so perhaps it's simply an update. For example I just compared both versions of TL-1 and they look the same to me*.

Just a random image.

[up]Oh sweet, he's fixing his ellipses? That's been bugging me for a while now.

Also even though it actually looks nothing like the character's outfit that pic makes me think "Magical Girl Lyrical Haruhi." [lol]

@ Yasumi pic: ...Kanae? Since when did you...

@ Kuyou with a ponytail: Personally, I think that a ponytail would be enough to cause Kyon to "gravitate" towards Kuyou quite easily... In fact, I would actually be interested in seeing Kyon's reaction to seeing her with a ponytail...

For that matter, I would like to see his reaction to seeing all the SOS girls with ponytails. Any thoughts on that?

My mission: to gather all of the Trope-tans and make New Tropeia a tropey place.
@ Specular:

At this point I thought you're going to suggest Kuyou wearing a ponytail, twintails, braids, and whatever is this hairstyle called... At the same time.
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.

They still do have different hairstyles. A Touhou's hair is a special thing.

*Barges in like a cannonball*

Hello All! So, i have bad news and good news. The bad news is that the VN channel is running dry again - the good news is that is the only bad news.

As such, i'm going to move an important part of the development here, a part i'm sure you'd like, as it involves looking at pretty pictures.

We need a fast fix for sprite resources applicable to these characters:

Satoshi Houjou (older)

Yurie-chan, daughter of Rena [Brown haired girl]

Naota, son of Mion [Green-haired little version of his father]

Aiko-chan, daughter of Satoko [(light???) dark-blonde haired girl.]

Yoko-chan and Azusa-chan, daughters of Satoshi and Shion [a duo of light green-haired little girls]

Matsuri-chan, daughter of Rika, casual ["purple-haired girl", "looking almost identical to what Kyon could remember of Rika's childhood pictures"]

Suou Kuyou

Fujiwara

Kyouko

*breathes.*

Ok, i'm done.

For now, i'd be happy if you guys make your proposals: find a character that fits the description, better if he/she is from a VN and thus i can adapt him or her easily, and write it right here. Make me happy! cool

I'll post my personal candidates later - and if nothing else comes up, you can vote on those. [tup]

Magical Girl Haruhi you said?

@Mad Kitsu:

Best Birthday Present Ever!

Now I think about it, Haruhi hasn't explicitly told the Big Damn Harem about Kyon's preference for ponytails. IIRC, just that one time in TL-1 where she recommended the hairstyle to Mikuru. Savvy girl, that Haruhi.

From a different PoV, I think they shouldn't overuse such effective bias. He could build a resistance wink.

@The Nobody:

At this point I thought you're going to suggest Kuyou wearing a ponytail, twintails, braids, and whatever is this hairstyle called... At the same time.

Let me try: That hairstyle can be described as a pair of short front twin braids ended with hair bells, a pair of long loose low twin tails ended with hair ribbons and choppy short bangs plus ahoge.

@Agasa:

Satoshi's sprite set seems to be particularly difficult. I don't remember any anime-like material of a forty-and-some years old blond male with purple/reddish eyes.

I will see what I can find (most likely not today though).

BTW, do you have any candidates for this or other sprite sets? Maybe if I see what you have now, something will "click" in that weird mechanism known as my memory.

@Specular: Satoshi is...a problem, I know.

As far as the others go, i have a very reasonable candidates for Makoto: Either Harusame or Otoha.

I personally like Otoha more.

For the others, i'm still researching. Green haired boys like Naota are especially hard to find.

One of the main problems is that i don't have a clear idea of the relative ages of the Hinamizawashi (as i call them - "Hinamizawa childs"). Can you help my confusion on this?

Most of other candidates can be found on the Sprite List, the Production Repository or on the Mixed to-be-sorted Repository.

Nothing about the Hinamizawashi there yet - maybe in the to-be-sorted one, please take a look.

Also, Funk Yeah, Yuecchi! grin

...and it's things like this that make me want to go and create a brand new sprite sheet made from a 3D modeling program* for all the characters, and use that instead of our current art style. It even comes with the advantage of being able to create all the needed sprites for that character period once you finish the model, like those art dolls that can take on various poses.

Heck, you could create props for the characters, like Kyon's laserblade, and have the character hold that in a pose for a certain scene. I know that there would be a lot of scene that could benefit from that level of customization, kitsu.

I would personally do it myself if it wasn't for some schedule conflicts in real life*, but if anyone is interested in this method, please send me a PM.

Kitsu, i hate to burst your bubble but... I do have some prior experience with this. The idea is so tempting i tried it before, but with only one or two persons working on it part-time, it's suicidal.

Especially with the level of detail you imply.

Instead, with sprites (and especially sprite-catching, like me and Grahf are so specialized in) we already have pretty much more than half of the sprites we need, in a form or the other. It would not be a good idea to redo everything from scratch. If you want to try it with new sprites, go ahead, but you'd still need the canonical frontal and side view of the character you want to model, and thus you'd need an artist - and thus you'd be soon back in the same conundrum.

@Specular: I searched some more. Fuka Hanano Could make a good Yurie-chan. Tomo too, if Yurie is younger.

Yes, you would be right in that sense, Agasa. A redo of all sprites via this method would be suicidal. And the front and side views are indeed important in making such models...

My reasoning for suggesting this method is that your current method requires that the pictures(for the most part, anyways) already exist, which is a fairly severe limitation on what one can do. That and I do recall the first episodes of Haruhi-chan being in a 3D style, which is what caught my thought processes onto this.

Wall of Text Warning

Still, it would take a lot of work just to make the base characters, so...

I think that I'll give it a shot anyway*. See you in a bit with a progress report, Agasa. (vanishes to go and start making models on Blender)

Personally, I call them the "dreadcousins."

You are right about the importance of their relative ages. I will revise the relevant chapters to locate any characterization titbit I can found.

About Shutaro, to avoid a potential inconvenience I think you should look of a character with a young and an old version available from the start. After all, Mikuru's boyfriend has an important scene in more recent chapters.

Is it too bad of me if I tell you that my first mental image of Yurie (Rena's daughter) and Aiko (Satoko's) were Henrietta and Rico, respectively, from Gunslinger Girl? I blame these two pictures.

Edit: I didn't notice it until now, animecharactersdatabase.com has a very interesting search engine.

I couldn't help but notice that the current arc is called Resolution. Either this means it will be last, and everything is coming to a headbutt...

OR Brian is trolling us epically, and there will be the Aftermath arc, then Where Are They Now arc, and Distant Finale arc, culminating in Babies Ever After.

[up][up]I think it's something different altogether. I suspect that this arc will end up solving either the issue of Sakaki not knowing of The Masquerade, the war between the Yamaguchi-gumi and Sumiyoshi-rengo, or a combination of both. I don't believe the time frame is right for a second Resonance Cascade, either. Besides, I suspect that this arc may be broken up, like the Filler Arc. Otherwise, this arc would be too large since Watanagashi is right around the corner.

 13375 Eamil, Fri, 7th Dec '12 8:18:19 PM from Somewhere over there. Relationship Status: Who needs love when you have waffles?
The arc before this one was the biggest yet so I wouldn't necessarily count on him adhering to a limit. [lol]

I think Watanagashi will happen during this arc. One of the reasons we've all been looking forward to it is because there's so many plot threads that are set to hit a climax or resolution during the visit, so I've been assuming that's what the title refers to.
