Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl will enrich your life.
Streets of Rage Remake is a lotta game for zeeeero money.
Also freeware is Zombie Smashers X.
Speaking of Streets Of Rage, why hasn't Sega made another game(though its rumored Fighting Force was originally a Streets of rage game) for the series in years? It doesn't even get any representation in the Sega All stars series.
There was also a beta SOR 4 for the Dreamcast, but it was apparently shot down by Sega of America. Here's a video of it:

I'm not much of a console gamer, but when Oni came out I kept asking myself “WHERE'S THE ENTIRE GENRE OF 3D BEAT'EM'UPS JUST LIKE THIS!?”. Er… Is there such a thing?
Dynamite Deka was also a pretty damn good pseudo 3D beat em up. The Quick Time Events were always fun.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.After seeing Konami's 90's arcade line-up, I'm convinced that 2D beat-em-ups are the best way to make use of a licensed property, and should see a revival in that vein. Scott Pilgrim is the perfect example of how it should work.
Fingers are crossed for a Boondocks beat-em-up some day, especially if it makes references to the Konami Simpsons game.
Streets of Rage 3 Bare Knuckle III makes me rage(quit) every time I lose one of my technique stars.
I can't vouch for the "just like Oni" part (isn't it a TPS too?), but as far as 3D Brawlers go, there's the following:
- Beat Down: Fist Of Vengeance
- Dynamite Deka series
- Fighting Force
- Crisis Beat
- Gekido: Urban Fighters
- God Hand
- Jackie Chan: Stunmaster
- The Bouncer
- Zombie Revenge
And probably an handful of others I am forgetting. But 3D Brawlers are not legion.

Ah, I've played Jackie Chan Stuntmaster. Needs More Love
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.^ I played that game too! It was awesome and i always loved Jackie's quotes particularly "I can't SWWWWIIIIIIIIIIM!".
A wish is never free.I was a pretty big fan of the Final Fight and Double Dragon series back in the day. :) Today, its Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Sengoku Basara, Drakengard, and God Hand.

Teacher's pet.: Pillars of Moral Character.Streets of Rage series is my favorite beat em up even today. I like all 3 of them even though the story in 3 was silly in the U.S release. Everyone says Skate's the worst(maybe in 2) but in 3 his improved headbutt attack murders. He's IMO the best one to use against the yamato trio, due to his high speed. In fact he makes them the easiest boss in the game.
Is there any reliable strategy to beat r. Bear and Shiva in 2? Or Jet in 3 for that matter? Those three are probably the three hardest bosses in the series, followed by the double Kruegers and Mona/Lisa from So R 1.
Not all that sure. I haven't played the series in a while.
Has anyone ever played the rest of the River City Ransom series?
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.The Neo Geo dodgeball game is awesome. Haven't played any of the brawlers, though.
Jet's vulnerable 50% of the time in 3 as opposed to 25% of the time as he was in 2. You just have to stay on him a lot, or, if you're really patient, kill all his lackeys so that you've got nobody else in your way. It's time consuming and you might die a few times trying it, but it's the only "sure fire" way to beat him if you're having trouble.
R. Bear is an ass and the only remotely reliable method I've found for beating him is to steal one of the ninja's katanas and slice him to ribbons with it. It usually has just enough range to avoid most of his attacks with.
Any body else looking forward to the final update to the Streets of Rage Remake?
Oh yeah, missed this:
That's mostly true among casual players because his punches are so weak and he looks stupid, but the really good players (as in, beat Mania on one credit for breakfeast-good) on Shoryuken and the SOR 2 Gamefaqs board agree Blaze (she's my favorite but w/e) is the worst character and Skate is better because of his dash and good throws. You certainly can do good stuff with him:

The problem with making a classic urban brawler for today is that almost any company will invariable play up the Rated M for Money angle. Just look at Beat Down or that latest Final Fight for an idea. I don't want a Real Is Brown Bloodier and Gorier Cluster F-Bomb filled gritfest. I want a shonen-style brawler with bright colors and a Gang of Hats around every corner to wail dragon punches and hadoukens into while i recover my HP by eating whole chickens off the ground. Screw realism.
At least we have Yakuza. That game's not perfect, but it's as close to what i want as what i'll get.
As for non-urban beat'em'ups their main flaw currently is either they're ridiculously brutally bone crushingly difficult (See Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta) or ridiculously hand-holdingly mind numbingly easy (See Dynasty Warriors and it's kin) even if they do have difficulty settings. What's up with that?
Bleye knows Sabers.^^Actually, Dynasty Warriors 6 was surprisingly challenging in comparison to its predecessors. The only problem was that some characters were bona-fide Game Breakers, most notably the ones who used ranged weapons such as Sun Shang Xiang and Yue Ying. This is due to a simple exploitable mechanic, the game never had any pure long range characters. Combine that with a maxed-out Renbu meter, which gives you an infinite 10+ hit combo loop and soon the entire screen was filled with perforated soldiers. :) As far as Ninja Gaiden goes, it is indeed nail-rippingly difficult but pales in comparison to the original series. . Bayonetta was sufficiently challenging, but falls short in comparison to games such as Devil May Cry 4 and Earth Defense Force 2017. But that's just this troper's humble opinion. :)
I do agree with your enthusiasm for old school beat em ups. The Bloodier and Gorier angle is played a little too much. Just look at Dragon Age. It was unnecessarily bloody and ended up looking too much like Fable and not enough like Lord Of The Rings. I'm not saying its a bad game, its a great one and then some, but I liked the pretty colors and rich gameplay from its predecessor, Baldurs Gate, a lot better.
^ That was a fun game ^_^ I even enjoyed playing with some of the weaker characters as well, such as the young lady who threw the giant dangos {I believe her name was Nagise?}

Teacher's pet.: Pillars of Moral Character. How about Viewtiful Joe? Thats pure Beat 'em Up action with a dose of platforming there.
Also theres some MMO's out there for this genre. Such as Grand Chase or Dungeon Fighter Online. They sometimes get called "RPG" though which is kinda false, unless characters with different strengths/weaknesses and varying equipment and items are enough to make an RPG.
Sonic hates SOPAGrand Chase and Dungeon Fighter Online ARE considered RPGs, mainly due to the leveling and skill systems.
There are also a couple other Action MMOs like Vindictus, Lunia, and Dragonica. Though Vindictus is more Hack and Slash than beat'em up. I dunno, is there really that much of a difference?

One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -LandstanderI absolutely LOVE Dungeon Fighter Online. Unfortunately the latest patch made it unplayable for me. So when they finally fix it and i log back on all the people on my friends list will have outleveled me. >_>
Dynasty Warriors has an MMO now too, actually. I still haven't finished the Forced Tutorial. Which is very long and repetetive.
Bleye knows Sabers.
Ah, brawlers. The one genre that let you experience the thrill of piledriving thugs into the concrete.
Discussions on modern Hack 'n' Slash like Devil May Cry and God Of War are welcome, but be warry most of those already have their own thread.
