when i opened Tv Tropes to sign in, it told me to disable my adblocker, and the only way to stop it is to log in to the site, (which i already did.) or buy a adfree pass with your credit card. Tv Tropes hasn't made enough money i guess.

We don't make any money. The site covers operating costs and that's about it. Don't want ads? Help pay for your share.

I can confirm that there is something much more seriously wrong. I couldn't get on the site at all on the computers at my workplace today. Even after disabling the adblocker, or trying to load on browsers that didn't even have an adblocker installed, I still got that message.

I think that's actually a phishing ad. I use adblocker (not sorry, bad things happen when I disable it) and haven't seen that page

Hmm. I don't know. It was very weird. When I was at work earlier today it appeared on all browsers, no matter whether or not I had the adblocker enabled. It was just a page saying that the adblocker needed to be turned off and explaining how to do it.

I haven't seen it either and one pc I use has locks on by default. The one I use personally at home has a soft lock which means limited ads.

I'm not sure I've even seen a message telling me to turn off my adblocker. I use one because I've had repeated problems with ads, and to customise the page a bit.

There is an adblocker prompt, but only for users who are not logged in. A while back we had issues with a Google API script redirecting to some obnoxious page, but that hasn't happened for a while.

Double Post, to clarify a few things.

  • Ads suck, but they're how we keep the site running. Nobody's getting rich here, except perhaps the ad companies.
  • If ads are interfering with your browsing experience, report them here. The admins are constantly working with ad providers to clean up the bad ones.
  • Malicious ads are a problem across the Internet. Every site I've seen has had to deal with them in some way or other. It's not a thing unique to TV Tropes.
  • If you want an ad-free experience, you are welcome to help cover our operating costs with a small donation.
  • You do not have a "right" to free content. If nobody pays for TV Tropes (or any other site), it stops running. That's how the world works.

Are we good? I'm locking this.
