"Wait! Hold on!" Manuel shouted as he burst into the common room. "Hold on, don't leave me behind!" He staggered into the room, stopping to looking at the map. "Oh, is this where we're going?"

The party had not been in the forest for that long when suddenly, Bart left the group and walked into the foliage, with not a word of explanation.

The others chased after him and asked what he was doing, but he just insisted he was "looking for a friend" and would not be dissuaded from his course of action.

Concluding he was being mentally influenced, the others tried to stop him. Manuel got in all fours in front of him, trying to trip him, but failed. Dex roll 7 vs Dex roll 13

On the other hand, Gaumata was able to bind his legs with a rope. Dex roll 18 vs Dex roll 10

However, he had already stopped by then. And he was... hugging a tree?

And declaring his undying love for it, as well. tongue

The others were naturally baffled. Then, they began searching the area.

Spiral suggested that they just knock some sense back into him, and Gaumata seriously considered it.

However, Kaliris' snake familiar led him to the tree Bart was hugging. The Kobold Mage then unleashed a Fire Bolt at it. It only managed to set a single leaf on fire though. 1d10 roll, 1 point of damage

Still, this caused a green-skinned woman [1] to literally emerge out of the tree, screaming, She begs the party not to burn her tree and surrenders.

She is asked to release Bart, which she does. When asked about her motives, she reveals she simply wanted male company. The Dryad was a fey bound to a tree long ago as punishment for falling in love with a mortal.

She then asks what the party is doing in her woods. They tell her about their mission, and she grants them permission to to pass through.

Encounter Over. The party earns 200 xp

Bard shook his head and chuckled quietly. "Well, that happened. To be fair, I wouldn't have minded the honeymoon. Though, kind of a dick move to charm me like that."

He gathered his things and looked at his companions, "I think it's best we be off, no?"

Soon, it began to get dark.

"I think we better stop and camp for the night" Spiral said. "I'll build a fire. You guys decide on watch turns".

"Well, of course, our dryad friend pointed us the right way, so," Gaumata put a finger to his chin. "We can wait while you get her letterhead. She might be able to keep in touch with a mental link too? Your first date is going to have to be a picnic though."

As Spiral bent down to start the fire, she felt someone touching her left buttock!

"AH!" she gasped.

She turned around. The closest person was Bart.

She walked over to him, and then-

*Slap!*

-slapped him across the face.

"Don't touch me without my permission!" she ranted.

Bart frowned slightly. "You know what? My bad, won't happen again. I think. You wouldn't believe me if I said it wasn't me."

"Ah, Mr. Bart. You already have a lady friend now, remember?" Manuel admonished him. "And Ms. Spiral isn't some cheap tavern bar maid either."

.*giggle*

"Did you hear that?" Spiral asked, turning around.

"I did" Bart agreed. [ "Someone was laughing" Spiral continued. "Look around, we are not alone"

(However, no one sees anything)

"Tell whoever it is to attack tomorrow. I've almost cracked chapter 32" Gautama said.

"I expect an apology from both of you," Bart said, pointing to Spiral and Manuel, "once we get to the bottom of this."

"More of those blasted fairies?" Manuel curses. "Come out, pixie! No more tricks! Just- just stop being such rotten asses! First my baby, then my life and what next now, hm? My dignity!? Well fine, you can have it! There wasn't that much left to begin with!"

Gautama was more diplomatic: "He means, sorry to be a bother, but what do you seek here? Someone already has a claim on the bard."

"Manuel, chill out, buddy, we can handle this without losing our cool" Bart said.

But the Farmer insisted: "It's not enough you have to steal husbands now, you seelie sirens!?" He then settles down, sullen. "Pixies... daisies... brownies..."

"I do wonder what goes on in your daydreams, but if you want to avoid the long sleep, I suggest taking your face out of your hands and looking alive" the Knight advised.

"Eh? Is this an actual threat then and not just more fae tricks?"

Suddenly, They hear a deep, gravely saying: "OOOOH.... OOOOH! GET. OUT. OF. THESE. WOODS. IF. YOU. WANT. TO LIVE!!"

"No thanks." Bart said, nonplussed . "You see, I'm still not convinced" Manuel added.

"Actually, we got a very personal invite to the woods" Gaumata added.

And then-

"Meh. You guys are no fun."

Suddenly- a Red Dragon appears!!

-Except its about the size of a cat. And it has butterfly wings.

"FAIRIES!" Manuel shouts in anger.

"Wait a moment!" Spiral snaps angrily. "Were you the one who touched me!?"

"Umm, well" the creature vacillates. "Technically yes. But, not with these claws. I used a Mage Hand spell, if it makes you feel better) (grins)

"Well, you woke me up. I guess I have to eat something. I'll come up with some recipe after she cooks you" Gaumata snarks.

"Hey, dragon thing, you're kind of a jackass, y'know?" Bart remarks.

"Baby stealing, father cursing, maiden groping fairies!" Manuel continues.

"Me? You guys walked into my lair uninvited. A dragon's got to protect his lair, you know. Even us Fairy ones."

"You are very valiant, smacking her from behind and laughing in the dark. Now try to put up a sign. It would've been a great deal easier" the knight points out.

"OK, I did that just for fun. But hey, nobody got hurt, right? Well except Mr. Handsome there. Hope that slap didn't sting much (hah)"

"I was... I was going to say an scarecrow" Manuel suggest.

"Huh. I guess Bart actually deserves one of those apologies" Gaumata agrees.

Suddenly, the dragon's grin disappeared. "You know about it?"

"What, poison oak? Yes."

"No. The scarecrow."

"Nope. Does it actually keep crows away?" the knight asks.

"Yes, they're excellent for keeping crows away from your potatoes" the farmer-turned-cleric explains.

"No. It kills people."

Manuel: "Oh no, that's not what they're for."

"Oh, so you don't know about this scarecrow... hmm.. should I tell you?"

"Yes. We're all awake now!" Gaumated snorted. "Thanks to someone...."

"Ah, what the Nine Hecks, I guess I owe you for the pranks. I will tell you. But just this once."

"Yes. Awake." Kaliris chimed in. "Also scarecrows are typically bad news."

"See, it was once just a regular scarecrow. But some crazy spellcaster bound an evil spirit that animated it. Only later, its creator was killed, and now it wanders the woods, looking for people to kill." the fairy dragon explained.

Kaliris:: "... We should do something about that."

"Don't worry, it never gets this far. It haunts are up ahead. You can rest here for now."

"So, a spirit needs to be freed then?" the knight asked.

"I suggest we apply a liberal helping of fire" the Kobold Wizard said.

"Again, trapped spirit. Trapped against its will."

"Considering its an evil one, I'd say it needs to be sent back to the Lower Planes" the Dragon reminded them. Then it added, "If you want to avoid it, there's another way across the woods"

"To potentially meet an unknown enemy and leave a spirit wandering in some moron's servitor experiment?" the knight disagreed.

The Dragon then pointed with a claw toward the cliffs. "You can climb the cliff wall, if you feel like it."

"Killing a scarecrow would make a better story than running..." the Bard pondered.

"We can't just let this thing keep killing people." Kaliris insisted.

Gaumata (to Bart): "Just don't make it a great epitaph."

The Dragon shrugged. "Don't say I didn't warn you..."

"I can never say that. I'll remember how you woke me for a long while yet" the knight responded.

"And on that note-" the dragon suddenly vanished used natural invisibility ability

"Well. That was eventful" Kaliris snarked.

"Bye" Bart said.

"So are we going scarecrow hunting?" Kaliris again asked.

Encounter over. 200 xp earned, 50 for each PC

Gaumata: "Let us burn some straw and free a restless soul!"

Manuel gets a faraway look in his eyes. "We have to kill it."

Bart: "Let's not get all poetic, we're just killing a scarecrow."

Kaliris:: "Potato guy, you alright? I've seen that kinda look before." (then, to Bart): "Also you're a bard, Bart. Poetic is your thing."

[ "Me? Poetic? Never."

"Really."

"Would I lie to you, my fine scaled friend?"

: "You have, in fact, Dirk."

"Hey, our affairs in Stonebark don't count, I had to lie to everyone."

Kaliris: "They chased me out of town while I was bartering for a scroll because they thought I was "fraternizing" with your lady, too. Believe me, it counts."

"I thought they chased you out because you threatened to burn something down? 'Something' being the town."

"I'm sure that helped."

Manuel: "Kill it in the holy name of the crystal dragon goddess! Hold on, burn what down?"

"Well, I wasn't hired to kill random monsters" Spiral said. "Only those related to the mission. So I'm not taking any unnecessary risks."

"Oh and I advise that you wait until morning to hunt that thing. It will be harder in the dark."

She turned around, but stopped.

'...And, Ok, sorry about slapping you" she said to Bart, then returned to her post.

The night had been surprisingly peaceful.

The next day:

"...OK, rise and shine, boys" Spiral said. "The less time I spend in the woods, the better. So, ready to go scarecrow hunting?"

Soon, everyone had prepared, packed up, and continued deeper into the fores.

.* * * * *

The group had arranged itself with Spiral up front, Bart and Manuel off to either side, Kaliris in the middle and Gaumata watching the rear.

Suddenly, Spiral stopped.

The forest was eerily silent.

She kneeled down. When she rose up again, a dead bird was on one of her hands.

It had been torn to bloody pieces- but not eaten.

She showed it to the others, but said nothing.

With easy-to-understand gestures, she said "keep quiet" and "wait here".

Then she kept going on her own, using her roguish stealth.

A few minutes later, she came back.

She beckoned them with a finger.

If they followed her silently, they could look through some bushes and see into a clearing ahead.

There, unmoving, stood the scarecrow. [1] Surrounded by all manner of dead animals, both freshly killed and long rotten.

She then moved out of the way.

Clutching his amulet with one hand, Kaliris used his other claw to make an arcane gesture in the air. Said claw abruptly caught fire, and the kobold hurled the sudden flaming spell at the Scarecrow.

"Surprise, you son of a bitch! Eat this!" He roared.

Gaumata sighed. One liners were for after things were dead—and you had swept the battlefield to ensure this. He looked to the scarecrow thing, it's whole smoking remains. Perhaps he can then...

Still, Gaumata gazed around the clearing and into the woods for any more trouble. Not like a scarecrow going smoke would be covert.

Upon the firing of the kobold, Bart stood up.

"Haha! Eat a dick, nerd!" He turns to Kaliris. "Get a load of this clown, calls himself a scarecrow, he's not very scary to me. Seems like a little bitch."

"Crystal dragon!" Manuel swore as he took a five foot step back, dropping his cross bow and hastily signing the mundra of good fortune, muttering a prayer to the very goddess he just blasphemed. He then waved his hand at the wizard, the fighter and the rogue in turn, giving them the goddess's favor.

The prayer died on his lips as he noted the scarecrow already dead.

"Um... praise Ginemvir?"

The next day, the party crossed the second river into the goblin's territory. Spiral insisted in going ahead to scout alone.

Suddenly, the party is ambushed by goblins! They make short work of them, however.

Spiral then returns, explaining she ran into the goblins and hid.

The group continues until they finally spot the Goblin village at the base of a cliffside. Once again, Spiral suggest that she will sneak around the village to investigate.

No sooner does she leave however, than a huge wolf appears! Not before it howls however, alerting the goblins down below. The heroes are able to calm it down, though. Moments later, its owner, a Goblin Chief, appears. It turns out however that the Chief had been deposed by "some woman" and mounts the wolf and leaves.

The group is then attacked by a bugbear! They beat it unconscious, tie it up, then heal it with Manuel's magic so as to interrogate it. Spiral shows up and insists they should kill it. However contrary to their suspicions, his description of the woman he works for, Jade, does not match Spiral's.

The group decides to rest before going directly to meet Jade, using the Bugbear as a guide. They find an altar that Manuel realizes is dedicated to the evil elder god Dendar the Night Serpent. On it lays a huge black obsidian gem.

An exotic priestess suddenly appears and welcomes the party. At her signal, Spiral frees the bound Bugbear and then flees, explaining she's a spy-for-hire! The Bugbear grabs a Javelin and stabs Kaliris, killing him. Jade meanwhile cast Poison Spray on Gaumata.

Suddenly however, the Bugbear drops dead, as Spiral, having heard Kaliris' death scream and regretting having betrayed the party, sneak-attacked the Bugbear from behind. Jade decides to run for it and the party chooses not to follow her into the caves behind the village.

Instead, they decide to take Kaliris' corpse back to Pueblo, where they sold the obsidian for enough gold to pay for having him raised.

The kobold explains that he had an after-life experience that convinced him to change classes. He will now be a Paladin.

First Milestone complete. All characters are now Level 2.
