On entry-pimping

So lately I was thinking about the subject of "entry-pimping." I don't doubt specific works frequently come to mind for me when it comes to Image Pickin' threads or adding page quotations.

However, it isn't always; or at least not exclusively; my favourite works that do.

For instance Archie!Sonic comics come up quite a lot; especially in comics-specific threads, but not exclusively. note  I did get into them a dozen or so years ago; they were a once-a-month thing, cost only a few bucks each, and they gave me some variety in the Sonic content I was consuming, as much as my favourite content was the games.

And yet, I resented that they replaced Sonic's adorable hyperactive ultra-clingy girlfriend with an aloof, bossy, sarcastic one. I resented that they diminished the role of Tails compared to the games, in which he was on a comparable level to Sonic and Knuckles. I resented that they reduced all 3 characters to being parts of a broader team of "freedom fighters," as if the emphasis didn't belong to those main 3.

The point is, despite all of that... I still keep feeling compelled to keep bringing up the 30-something issues I'm familiar with over and over again, years after I stopped considering them worth a few bucks a month to keep following. Partly because they're comics, sure, and comics are designed to be looked at as still images, while movies and TV are not. But as for why I keep picking them over webcomics... I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's familiarity. There's too many webcomics for me to get anything more than the gist of any of them, (if even that) except VG Cats and XKCD... which I already use almost as frequently in such threads as it is. But both webcomics are overwhelmingly popular, whereas Sonic comics are not, so maybe the difference comes from feeling compelled to draw more attention to works that get none.

Even Shakespeare comes up from time to time; both from the Image Pickin' threads and Complete Monster threads. But I resented that schools made us learn it; as if they didn't trust our judgment on what fiction to consume. But when I see a subpage without an image, and nothing else comes to mind, it seems curious that I figure Shakespeare will do.

Once again the main factor seems to be familiarity. I start with what I know. And whatever I resent about Sonic comics, or Shakespeare, I feel compelled to draw upon it anyway.

Of course, all of this is beside the point of whether entry-pimping is a good thing or not. I just felt like I should share this, as either way, I don't think it should be conflated with Gushing About Shows You Like.
