Black Gal on White Guy Drama is in need of serious reworking if not deletion. As it stands the trope description is very barebones, and what it does have is largely historical trivia rather than a proper delineation of a trope. It comes off as a "the same, but more specific" version of Maligned Mixed Marriage that doesn't do anything to distinguish itself in the same way that Where da White Women At? and Mighty Whitey and Mellow Yellow do.

If someone can identify specific trends that recur throughout fictional portrayals of such couples that are distinct from portrayals of other mixed-race couples, even if they're not necessarily maligned, then perhaps we can salvage this trope page. However personally I haven't noticed any such characteristics.

At the least, many of the examples on the page are rather poor, insofar as they're a catchall for any couplings between a black female and a white male character, whether or not they even have the drama in the trope name and description.

Opened.

I doubt we'd find correct examples that won't fit in Maligned Mixed Marriage, so we can safely cut this one.

Should I begin by deleting examples which don't fall under this trope due to lacking the requisite drama?

Yeah, we can weed out any example that lacks the drama requirement. It's classified as misuse anyways.

Alright, deleted for now.

Maligned Mixed Marriage however does specifically require a marriage, while this trope does not.

The page says this at the end:

And just to be clear, this trope can cover any romantic relationship, not just marriages. We just like alliteration here.

So it covers all examples of discrimination against mixed race.

Looking at the actual examples for the main Black Gal on White Guy Drama pageI don't see any consistent trends unique to these couplings that mean they're better off staying on their page rather than being migrated to over there.

That was added unilaterally as far as I can see by ~Dragonmouth five years ago, so I am not inclined to trust that. These tacked on qualifiers have a habit of diluting tropes. I also think that the description is not bare bones at all - there are race issues involved which would be left untroped if a merger happened.

If so the trope description needs to be expanded as to why this is tropeworthy as opposed to a collection of useful notes which may or may not even apply to many of the entries, which going by the way they're worded usually come off as a straightforward example of the Maligned Mixed Marriage but More Specific.

I think we need more opinions on this first though.

Keep in mind, there's over 5,800 inbounds.

Personally, I think it basically is strictly speaking The Same But More Specific to Maligned Mixed Marriage, but even so the page has value to the point where I think the description should be expanded. There's enough historical context behind this trope that having its own page is valuable, but the description just brushes them off by saying "there are historical connotations" and needs more mention of the perceived inequity of power between the two.

So if I understand the two tropes correctly:

  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: An interracial couple faces criticism from society regarding their difference in race.
  • Black Gal on White Guy Drama: An interracial couple, specifically involving a white man and black girl, faces specific criticism (selling out, derision) regarding their difference in race.

While this trope is technically a subtrope to MMM, I'm not sure it's just The Same But More Specific. Based on the description, there's supposed to be specific criticism that makes it different from the racial criticism in MMM.

However, looking through the examples, It seems like "specific" is dropped in favor of general criticism seen in MMM. I think I even see a few borderline zce's. We'd have to wick check to make sure.

I'd hold off on a merge for now, theoretically it's different enough to be it's own trope.

Keep in mind that Amicably Divorced became Amicable Exes to account for other relationships besides marriage.

Are selling out and derision specific to white male/black female couples though? Or is it something that's more unanimous? I can't think of any concrete examples to indicate for or against that being a trend.
