So Sage's YouTube is missing a bunch of his videos, with the most notable being the AKIRA review.

I know he has a website where I can find them and they're probably missing for legal reasons, but it's still kind of annoying.

I think that those reviews got taken down from YT due to DMCA.

Funny, I finished watching his first Tenchi-related review earlier today.

My favorite thing about the TU review is the Take That! to GXP...

Next, Bennett will review a part of the Sailor Moon anime. I'm shocked that he doesn't like SM... We'll see how it goes...

It's Shōjo and he wasn't exactly a member of the target audience so it isn't surprising.

Anyway it ain't Seinen or some of the rougher Shōnen he doesn't like it.

Well, the original dub was irritating and it was cleaned up for 90s US markets.

So I'm watching the Pilot Candidate review, and Bennett brings up how the show was licensed despite it being canceled in Japan.

Didn't the same thing happen with The Big O? And didn't that get renewed due to being popular in America?

Some companies will still license a series even though it got canceled. Hell Gundam got canceled...

Cartoon network paid for the final The Big O season.

There's a difference between cancelled and finished. And sometimes something can be both. Like, the Big O. It wasn't actually cancelled the first time around. The first full season was completed, it did okay and the committee decided not to continue it, which isn't the same thing. Then Cartoon Network got their hands on it, it did really well and they paid for the second season and basically demanded a cliffhanger ending because that's how American TV works.

There really aren't that many anime shows (aside from the "Now that you've watched the show, go read the manga!" type) that end with a horrible cliffhanger because they got cancelled. Usually a not very good ending is tacked on (like the first Negima adaptation) or it gets really rushed near the end. Or you get something like After War Gundam X which just ended up cramming two thirds planned story (intended for 39 episodes on its own) into 26 episodes...and ending up with surprisingly modern pacing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would be weird for a show to be licensed if it just cuts off and there's no ending at all and no way to continue the story.. If there is an ending, like with Gundam, despite it being cut short, it's not actually weird for it to be licensed. (Especially since the original Mobile Suit Gundam was not the first part of the franchise to be licensed.)

How the heck did he lose all that weight? I hope it wasn't from an illness.

Good review. Only real disappointment was the lack of a Linkara cameo.

So I recently watched the Fake review as part of my archive binge.

Does Bennett not understand the concept of Translation Convention? His complaints about the Japanese dub having an inherent plothole are honestly kind of dumb.

Who exactly is Captain Harlock and what's so great about him? Bennett doesn't really explain his deal in the Galaxy Express 999 review or the opening segment of the Harlock Saga review.

Captain Harlock is a space pirate and his ship is basically a spear with cannons attached on it.

Where there's life, there's hope.

In the original show/manga, Harlock is a space pirate who abandoned Earth because the people of Earth have become lazy, stupid and useless to the point that they refuse to believe that the alien Mazone are invading. Even after the Mazone drop a gigantic black sphere in the middle of a city.

Harlock, and the crew of the Arcadia, end up being basically the only real defence against the Mazone.

But that probably isn't what Bennett saw, because the original Space Pirate Captain Harlock only got an english release (that wasn't complete garbage) a few years ago. He probably saw the movie Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth, which is genuinely one of the great classic anime films. If you get a chance, watch it, it really is fantastic.

[up][up][up] Coz honestly this sort of like explaining who Goku or Superman is. Captain Harlock is a space Pirate (though in the Robin Hood "Is a good guy" sense) from an anime called Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He's badass and awesome and his show is one of the first Animes to get an english adaptation and some sort of wide release (Though I'd argue his show has a wider audience with French viewer who likely remember the show as "Albator, le corsaire de l'espace"), which along with being sort of a seminal work of Anime in Japan (Along with his expanded universe Sage touches on) makes Captain Harlock sort of a huge deal.

Bennett's City is on fire and mandatory evacuations are okay (He's alright and so is everyone he knows), so there might be some delays on future episodes.
