Tsurezure Children is probably the best show of the season, it is an absolute travesty that it is a freaken short.

I was expecting New Game to be that but the last few episodes have sucked.

Speaking of Tsurezure Children, we just had a rom com skit that played out like a fight scene straight out from Dragonball. Incredible.

I still say Made in Abyss is best show of the season.

I really need to watch Tsurezure, but it says a lot that I actually have a show this season I think about every week and look forward to new releases for, and that's Made In Abyss.

It's been fun.

Ive been enjoying 18if. The idol episode was especially weird with a dominatrix idol turning men into girls and forcing them and her Idol members to go through what she did.

Then Haruto spent half the episode as a male with a visible erection and summoning his Weenie Genie.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

The following series are ones that I haven't even touched this season due to them not looking interesting:

Nana Maru San Batsu
Musekinin Galaxy Tylor
Dive!!
Vatikan Kiseki Chousakan
Jikan no Shihaisha
Enmusubi no Youko-chan
Katsugeki Touken Ranbu
The Reflection
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun

As this is pretty high a number of long format series of a season I haven't even checked the first episode out for, I figured I'd ask here if any of them are good and I've been missing out.

I haven't watched anything for the summer season either. Nothing anyone says is good catches my eye.

@Gabriel: Honestly, probably not. Among that list, I know that Enmusubi Youko-chan is pretty widely regarded as awful.

It's been fun.

@ Gabriel

Enmusubi no Youko-chan is downright awful while Musekinin Galaxy Tylor has flimsy connections to the original Tylor and is pretty much just your average short-form gag comedy. I dropped both quickly.

The Reflection doesn't really do anything to set itself apart from the standard Marvel superhero story, and is too sedate for its own good. Jikan no Shihaisha has okay use of its central time-manipulation battle system, and overall an okay action fantasy thing. Nothing to write home about.

None of the other series you've listed are what I'd call good, but if you're willing to branch out:

  • Both Dive and Nanamaru Sanbatsu are somewhat mediocre sports shows. I prefer the latter because I find the sport and the accompanying trivia interesting.
  • Vatican Kiseki no Chousakan is hammy and hilarious Dan Brown pulp. Chock full of "number of the beast" and "stigmata" and "demonic possession" drivel, which is hard to take seriously what with the over-enthusiastic zoom-ins of the camera and edgy shrouded-in-shadow ambience of the show. My favorite part is when a priest performs an exorcism, promptly chastises himself for being an idiot and knocking out the screaming vessel of Satan with a heavy Bible.
  • Katsugeki no Touken Ranbu has a poor excuse of a story, and rather one-dimensional characters with shallow dialogue ("We must protect history" over and over and over), but more than makes up for it with luscious visuals and slick swordplay. In short: watch it for the action scenes. Or look those up on youtube or something.
  • Keppeki Danshi no Aoyama runs its central joke into the ground pretty damn quickly. The actual joke is that Aoyama is super good at everything a la Sakamoto of Sakamoto desu ga?, which has its ups and downs. As a comedy, very hit and miss, would direct you to Tsurezure Children or Gamers! instead. Oh, and the animation is surprisingly good, especially in the actual soccer matches.

Maybe I'll check out Vatican and Katsugeki no Touken Ranbu when I have an empty evening, but overall I'm glad that it seems I haven't really missed anything.

While I do agree its forgettable, I don't really get a Marvel vibe from The Reflection.

It literally has Stan Lee involved. Also the main guy looks like one of Cyclop's recent costumes.

Yes and? Stan Lee's done some weird anime stuff. Like the manga where he's the villain who built a bunch of cute robotboys and sent them back in time.

Or Heroman.

Overall impressions

  • DIVE: For an anime about diving, it sure feels shallow. It's very obvious they cut out chunks out of the source material because the character development jumps all over the place. Steer clear.
  • Hajimete no Gal: From what I can tell, a botched adaptation that reduces a perfectly sweet and serviceable love story into tits and ass and very poor pedophile jokes. Steer clear.
  • Isekai Shokudou: A delightful food-oriented show, somewhat atypical for not focusing so much on the cuisine but rather using it as means to explore the fantasy world. This has rather hefty worldbuilding, most of it coming naturally from introspection and dialogue rather than overt narration. It falls just short of greatness, with room for improvement in animation (especially in selling the Food Porn), arrangement of the skits and the writing therein, in particular the development of certain characters. Nevertheless, a relaxing watch.
  • Keppeki Danshi Aoyama-kun: The central gag is overplayed, enough that the non-comedic parts of the show are actually more engaging to watch, when it's usually the other way around for me. Probably the best part of the show is when the titular character is outright baffled when some girl manages to get past his clean-freak barrier. And as usual for overpowered MCs the supporting cast is of more interest here, but they are hit and miss. The soccer matches themselves are actually animated well, even if there's really no semblance of strategy you'd see in a more typical sports show. And I really dig the character designs. All in all, though, it misses a few goals.
  • Koi to Uso: Yet another love story about a spineless nondescript male teenager stuck between two girls in a love story that goes nowhere. They do live in a quasi-dystopia where your love is predetermined, but that part doesn't really get any focus apart from providing some cheap fuel for drama. There's even an interesting plot thread in there about the MC's best friend who has a crush on him, but we don't get to explore the hardships of a gay male in a society that is pushing for more babies. The dinnerplate eyes also bother me. That said, the soundtrack is incredible, with very catchy quick-temp tracks courtesy of the composer of Scum's Wish. And it's decent if you like this sort of classic romance shojo story.
  • Nanamaru Sanbatsu: A surprisingly solid, if modest, quiz-bowl variant of the standard sports story. Really digs into the minutiae of competitive quizzing and keeps the game exciting every episode. The oodles of trivia aren't half-bad, either! It is however strictly by the numbers with regards to plots and characters, so watch only if 1) you like sports shows or 2) you like quizbowl and/or trivia.
  • Re Creators: As with most shows with a High Concept, expect something reasonably decent and you're set. That's what this show is: okay. Okay action, okay characters, okay dialogue, okay plot. The meta bits are undoubtedly the best ones (particularly love the magical girl fussing over the destruction her magic causes, the rival character spoiling the plot in his novel, as well as Miss Badass Mangaka's cool as heck speech to her creation), and the writers could have expanded on those further.
  • Sagrada Reset: Only really picks up in the second half, where all the random musings on superpowers actually start coming together. There are several creative takes on superpowers here which I don't want to spoil, that results in an actually pretty engaging plot. It's therefore a damn shame that only one of the characters has any actual character. Legitimately did not care about the cast at all— I suppose this is one to watch for the plot rather than the characters, and even then it takes 16 episodes to really get going.
  • Sakura Quest: Very much like Shirobako in the sense it's about adult women doing their darnedest to do their jobs. The main difference would be that unlike the Shirobako girls, the SQ girls are unsure of their futures, and the five of them slowly figure out what they want to do over the course of 25 episodes as they try to revitalize a declining town. The supporting cast is also very charming, with bratty ambitious teens, laid-back sorta irresponsible working men and goofy geezers. It's not exciting stuff (though a certain madman does bring out stuff like powered exoskeletons), but it does plaster a grin on your face, and I wouldn't mind revisiting this town.
  • Tsurezure Children: After watching the final episode I rushed to binge on the manga and wow, it is really fun. There was maybe one or two characters I wasn't delighted to see— the rest, I was ready to laugh and squee the moment they appeared on screen. The skits themselves are fantastic; they're kind of like a compilation of the best snippets in rom coms, but it also won't hesitate to play with the usual love-story formulas. In particular I found it refreshing that the show openly acknowledges the sex aspect of teenage romances, even if none of the characters have managed to take it quite that far yet. The art does its job well enough; the real star is the voicework, because it is phenomenal, and improves on the corresponding manga scenes a great deal. A must watch, in my books!

And now some discussion for episode 11 of Classroom of the Elite: obviously Ayanokoji is behind the arson, and probably the panty theft. The question is, why go so far? I imagine he wants to relieve Horikita of leadership, but why do all this? It also doesn't look like Ibuki is working for him, which also begs the question of who her employer is. The most likely scenario is that Class 3 planted moles in every class so they could figure out who their respective leaders are. Still doesn't explain why Ayanokoji did what he did, though. Hmm.

I think Sakura Quest does its job well even if the subject matter isn't necessarily exciting (which hey the show even addresses itself considering Manoyama is some town in the country), the characters more than make up for it. I appreciate it.

I think the two anime from this season that will leave the strongest impression on me is Princess Principal and Tsurezure Children.

I would disagree somewhat. Shirobako does have uncertainty over what to do in the future, at least in Aoi's character arc given that a production assistant is usually a stepping stone to other, higher roles within the industry rather than a goal in of itself.

The difference is that in Shirobako it is just one part of the whole grand arc and included along side things such elements as improving artistic skills, creativity vs security in artistic roles, enthusiasm vs disillusionment and burn-out and a whole host of others. In Sakura Quest it's front and centre as the defining theme of the entire show.

Either way, as I said at the beginning of it's run, since its the same creative team as Shirobako they had a deep well spring of goodwill to draw on from me and they didn't disappoint.

[up][up] Still waiting for their final episodes, but my top picks will probably be Made in Abyss (cannot wait to get to the manga), Tsurezure Children and frigging Gamers!.

[up] Good points. The focus is different, but the beats are largely the same.

I hope a potential second season can amend that since I have the likely unpopular stance of liking Takase and Kanda more than Sugawara and Takano.

I do however like that Chiaki and Kana got a lot of love.
