What about a collage?

[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

If not then maybe 1 or 5?

[up]I don't see any point of having a collage. 1 is good enough.

Well a collage would really push the whole 'running late to school with a slice of bread in your mouth' stereotype is a serious thing. To the point of cliche, intentional attempts at invoking the stereotypical Crash-Into Hello for a future boyfriend (that page's image is also this trope), and lampooning.

As much as I like the OP, 3.1's added subtitle helps get the trope across more fully, so I'll lean toward that provided the subtitle is legible at wiki size...might take some cropping. 3.8 would also work but the text across the bottom is distracting.

Yeah I cant get rid of the Episode Title Card on 8 unless we transplant the subtitles to another frame, here is a blank frame of the the narrator making fun of the cliche. If anyone can transplant the subs.

I was unfamiliar with the "slice of toast hanging from mouth" shorthand. I would guess that many others are too. Perhaps the caption could describe it?

Something like 'Running late to school, check! Toast in the mouth, check! Quick turn the corner and Crash-Into Hello your dream guy!'

It would work best with this one though. Although she runs into a girl in full camo and night vision goggles because it is that kind of series.

If we go with a collage, we need one non-Japanese media image because examples outside of anime/manga exist.

I don't think the toast thing is that important. Seems like a Japanese-specific cliche that's not strictly necessary to illustrate the trope.

Also, I kind of like the current image's caption. Might need some altering to not have two separate potholes, but it could be used even if the image is changed.

Just being late for school in general isn't a trope in of itself, in the same vein as Late For Work is not a trope. Specific aspects and stereotypes are like Go Stand In The Hall for being late and the bread thing.

The trope was built around the whole bread in the mouth and multiple stereotypes and quirks during the 90s. To the point it isn't actually played straight much anymore or meta commented on that is how it is done.

The current name is more general than it should be but that is what it is called.

Edit: We could rename it to Late For School Bread now that I think about it. seriously it is a huge thing.

I think the original image is fine. [tdown] It looks like the original is invoking a slight blur to turn up the romanticism, which works well with the caption lampshading the trope

However I think the notion of Later For School Bread or Snack is a good idea if we're distinguishing between it from the universal concept of being late for school. In the introductory paragraphs, the first half is more universal, but part way through it becomes fixated on the public eating aspect.

Uhh the blur is because it is a crop of a bad quality screen from a rip of an anime from 06.

Right now the only thing that's got any real consensus is 3.1 and even then that's not enough to make a change. Can anyone find a better-quality version of the current? GIS didn't turn up anything for me.

I can not find anything else aside from that small crop of a 480p rip. I am not even sure that 720p versions of that show even exist, it is from 2006 without a Bluray release.

Switching for essentially the same thing but quality upgrade should be fine IMO.

Well, pending you or someone else finding a quality upgrade of the current, I've gone ahead and hooked a crowner between the three options that have got [tup] votes so far.

Is there a better animated version of that NGE one from the movies or something? It is way Off-Model.

[up] I don't think so. Considering the infamy of the animation issues in Eva's last two episodes, I think that was about the best they could do...I don't think it's all that bad, myself. This is the only other thing I could find through GIS.

Calling this one. The new pic's up and tagged, and the former pic and some of the other options have been put on the Image Links page...I wasn't able to find the source works for some of the suggestions.

As for a caption, I think I like 9's version better than what was there originally.

I'd like it if the caption said something about the slice of toast. (Also, no chained Sink Hole.)

"Careful with that toast, it makes a mess when you Crash-Into Hello your new love interest that is just around the corner."

That is literally the only thing I can think of for this, aside from the whole 'toast is the modern person's breakfast' cultural thing that dates back to the 1920s in Japan.

Even a dry explanation of that trope—like "A slice of toast hanging from the mouth is common visual shorthand for 'running late' in Japanese media."—would be informative, maybe new information, to most readers.

[up] That's essentially just copying the description into the caption. [tdown] Maybe "Cue running into future love interest in 3...2..."?
