Sorry, but we need actual evidence of misuse before opening a TRS on such a large topic.

There are many examples, both on the trope page and the various work pages it's present on, that misuses this trope. The main form of misuse seems to be where tropers are using it for a character who ascends to godhood or becomes incredibly powerful. The trope is about the character having a god complex, regardless of how justifiable.
