1 could work better if we chopped off the unused space on the left side of the screen, maybe trim the top and bottom too to get rid of the remaining HUD bits. Bring the focus just on Mario and the mooks.

6 is pretty good, but has too much overlap with Undead Mooks due to the boney fish being more prominent than the Cheep Cheeps.

#6 is fine. It's got skeletons, but they're fish bones, plus the pic on Night of the Living Mooks doesn't look anything like this one.
I think #4 is much better, provided we can up its brightness or contrast.

6. Sure there's some overlap with Undead Mooks, but 6 shows the aquatic part more prominently. That is, these Undead Mooks are just skeletons with glowing eyes as opposed to rotting flesh that affects the color of the water, or something. The emphasis is that we're under the water.

The current doesn't show the "mook" part of the trope (disposable, similar-looking minions of the bad guys) at all. It just looks like a random sea monster. For all I know, it could be the boss of the stage.
