I read a name like "Johnny Awesome" as, "I'm a regular Johnny, but I'm awesome".
It's sort of why a creature name like a Dire Koala sounds far more awesome than a Common Warg. It's about a cool modifier to a mundane name. It's not the "Johnny" part that's the cool bit. It's the surname that acts as a modifier to a common name. A name like Bobby Bombastic would have the same impact (not counting the alliteration).
Check out my fanfiction!Exactly.
Take the WoW example mentioned earlier. The guy is clueless and he even thinks the "Johnny" part of his name is awesome. That's clearly part of the joke.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I second merging.
I'm really struggling to come up with any examples past Johnny Cash for a real life on (and even that's more of an example of the man himself being enough of a musical legend his name in turn elicits respect)
Wicks cleaned. Only thing left is merging any valid on-page examples.
eta: the tricky part is deciding if they're actually examples of Awesome McCoolname, or just random Johnnies.
eta 2: the tedious part is checking each example to see if it's already on the appropriate subpage of Awesome McCoolname.
Anyway, I'm taking a break, but can probably finish before much longer, if no one else jumps up to to so.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Ok, after tedious searching to make sure I wasn't getting duplicates, I finally got the on-page examples merged. Main page is now a redirect, laconic has been sent to the cut-list. There's no discussion page to move/merge—I think this can be called done.
(Is there someplace to announce merges, like there is with renames? Been a while since I did one.)
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee. And closing.

Vote up for yes, down for no.
Oh not saying it should be a standalone trope but it should qualify in merging with Awesome Mc Cool Name.
Googling giving fictional characters the name Johnny gives me "Johnny is a cool name, suggesting a bit of a rebel, the sort of guy who'd wear a leather jacket and ride a motorbike."
