Before I can start seeing what individual characters can do, I need to know what everyone can do.

I dunno, I don't think the use of moves like the ones that force a switch-out or even blocking in back-to-block games would be that easy to figure out without tutorials.

I'm going to take the side of having a tutorial here. It's not strictly necessary but it does wonders for making the game more accessible.

[up]x3 While that approach works for a game like a platformer where all you do is jump and shoot, it's not as useful for a fighter where you use 3 out of dozens of characters with wildly different moves with wildly different inputs and wildly different ways to link those moves to each other, not to mention where each effective combo could work as a bathroom break for the reciever.

Even if you really want to learn the basics without jumping into Training Mode, a simple "How To Play" section explaining what generally everyone can do (like the ones in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Darkstalkers Resurrection, both of which have such sections dedicated to explaining the game mechanics) will suffice.

This is a niche genre for a reason. I'm reasonably competent at fighters and can't play the Marvel games to save my life because they have some of the most obtuse, unintuitive combo systems ever, and the game does a piss poor job teaching you how to do much of anything. Even the mission mode is too barebones to be used as a learning tool, since it just presents combos to you without context.

A full fledged tutorial should absolutely be in the game, considering there are smaller fighters out there with them.

[up][up]I'll put it this way. I could play Guilty Gear Xrd, go into training mode, and just go through a character's movelist to test their moves and whatnot. So i'd understand those basics. I would not however, know how to perform Faultless Defense (Hold two buttons while blocking). I would not know how to perform Blitz Shield (Hold down Slash and Heavy Slash, which will parry an attack). I would not know how to Roman Cancel (Press Punch, Slash, Heavy Slash at the same time, and there are three variants).

Even if I inputted the button commands by accident, I would not know entirely what these things actually do. That's why tutorials are important, to explain the full details of mechanics. When players know base techniques, then Training modes open up, where they can experiment with characters using the techniques they know.

A corpse should be left well enough alone...

[up] Again, a "How To Play" section explaining the mechanics in detail fixes that issue.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition has a Trials mode where you learn about and practice the game mechanics such as parrying, as well as practice combos with certain characters. However, the game also has a "How To Play" section in the Options menu explaining the game mechanics. Instead of having to go through all the Trials (which is tedious and thankfully not a Forced Tutorial, which is a personal pet peeve of mine when it comes to video games in general and I doubt anyone else here is a fan of them either), you could just simply read up on the mechanics, and then jump into Training Mode and practice knowing the basics of the game.

... can we please change the subject to something more interesting? I don't think this is going anywhere (and I've already stated that I don't have a problem with games having tutorials, just that they shouldn't be absolutely required... especially not when the results are forced on you).

I usually just read the manual when I need to learn how to control a game. First thing I did when I first got Blazblue: Continuum Shift EXTEND was read the manual.

I'll also agree that a tutorial should be in, but not forced. Especially for those that are hardcore Marvel vs. Capcom players.

And I think 3 is still simple enough to play.

I will agree though that combos are somewhat difficult (I can pull off small combos but nothing consistent).

A how-to-play section would be a step in the right direction, but personally, I have trouble absorbing game tutorials if I can't play through them.

And I'm not saying it should be mandatory. Like I said, Mortal Kombat and Injustice did it perfectly.

I still don't know how to cancel a Hyper Combo into another character's Hyper Combo.

For another perfect tutorial, check Blazblue's tutorials, they teach ALL the basics including Rapid Cancels, Overdrives and such.

Eddie Brock is reuniting with the symbiote in the comics. In other words, OG Venom is back.

I remember when people were speculating Marvel characters for MVC3, they were predicting that, if Venom was going to be included, the MacDonald Gargan version would be the one. I guess that was because Mac Gargan was Venom at the time (I don't really know, since I wasn't very knowledgable about the comics at the time... and hell, I'm still not very knowledgable), but I maintained in contrast that...

  1. If they were going to include Venom, they'd put in the classic Eddie Brock Venom we all know and love (after all, Capcom managed to get Shuma Gorath into the game as DLC despite Marvel's wishes).
  2. If Mac Gargan was going to be in the game as a playable character, it would've been as the Scorpion.

I still maintain those two things for Infinite, though if Venom does make it in, he'd be one of the few returning characters I'd like to see get a revamped moveset (along with War Machine and Juggernaut).

So you know that power charge shot that X has that looks like a Hyper Combo? I hope when he uses the First Armor, it turns into the Spiral Crush Buster.

Since we're still awaiting that potential announcement at PAX (and I have way too much time on my hands), gonna post this little thing I made here.

"What If... Capcom went crazy and filled this game's roster with over a hundred characters?"

balance?

who needs that when the entire roster has a touch of death combo

True. Though if they go that route they should go all in. I feel Capcom tried to toe the line with UMVC 3 if that makes sense.

I was being sarcastic.

TBH touch of death combos are even less forgivable if there's only going to be 2 characters, but people are probably going to find them anyway so they may as well just program them in for everyone.

And yeah, Venom was never banned. What happened was Capcom allegedly wanted Venom and at the time Marvel was no longer pushing that version of the character (in fact IIRC 2011 was when they launched the heroic Venom series).

I see.

Would you guys be okay with the idea of Venom being a playable character in Infinite?

[up][up] I'm fine with it as long as they touch up his moveset with a couple new moves and maybe a Level 3 hyper combo. Also, he should be voiced by Chopper Bernet (who voiced Mac Gargan Venom in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2).

Venom is cool and all, but I honestly think Carnage would make for a more interesting and versatile playable character. He basically can do anything Venom can and then some.

Venom is iconic to the Spider-Man mythos.

Also, Mv C 3 ultimately came just shy of Mv C 2's roster count. 50 (51 counting Galactus) versus Mv C 2's 56.

@ 120 character roster

I know it's mostly for fun and all, but Namco X Capcom characters are owned by Namco, not Capcom, and even though Marvel had a crossover with Attack on Titan does not mean AOT characters can be here.

Jojo and Star Wars can't be here either.
