It doesn't exactly specify, but it says that the man wishing to hire you is a duke, and another duke claims to have a claim on some land that a ancestor of him conquered a long time ago. So it isn't some giant Holy Roman French Empire of Ottomans.

Not really, it's common for rulers to hire mercenaries. Everyone packs their gear, weapons, and armor. Before you set off, one of your friends stops you.
"If we're going to be an actual mercenary company, we need a banner! What should it be?"
