Yup this is happening apparently

I'm pretty neutral on this. I still have yet to see the first Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie despite loving the book as a kid and I personally felt the Tim Burton remake was okay at best.

WB is in the midst of franchise fever between coming in so hot on the DCCU, the plan to make five Fantastic Beasts movies, and now this.

Would it be too much to say that both Roald Dahl and Gene Wilder are spinning in their graves?

The last time somebody tried to give a backstory to Willy Wonka, you all know what happened. I doubt this will be any better.

There's literally an actual sequel to the book (which if I recall has good worldbuilding, and more than enough to fill the modern filmmaker's Darker and Edgier itch), why not just adapt that in some way?

I mean, yeah. Adaptation Displacement. I get it. But still.

It's like Disney making an awkward prequel to The Wizard of Oz when there's actual interesting sequels (some of which do fill in prequel era info) they could've made.

They can't. The Dahl state forbids it. Chocolate Factory is the only work from that series they can adapt from.

Mind you, I'm alright with this idea. I mean it'll probably be shit, but I have nothing against it as of itsefl.

I'm not usually one to damn on premise alone but I can't see this being good. Announcing it so soon after Wilder's passing rubs me the wrong way, as well.

Dahl literally used his will to forbid the glass elevator from ever being adapted. So it will have to wait until it reaches the public domain.

I'm rather neutral about the idea but what makes me interested is that, given the above information, why the Dahl estate would actually give Warner Brothers the rights to make such a movie. Must have been a really good pitch.

Or perhaps it was the money?

I kind of wonder whether Dahl would have approved of this...

EDIT: I think I've just realized why exactly this is such a bad idea. Willy Wonka's supposed to be enigmatic; there's a mystique around him. Trying to explain anything more than what Dahl explained would ruin the mystique - and thus, the character...

It'll come, we'll be kinda befuddled, then it will go, just like the Burton one.

I reckon there's roughly a 98.7% chance this film is being made, or at least announced, now to cash in on Gene Wilder's death, much like the Jumanji remake was announced within weeks of Robin Williams' death. Although in Jumanji's case, I do at least think a remake would have happened eventually. This one, not so much.

Should be good. Hope they go creepy with it, but not overly dark.
