WHAT HAS SCIENCE WROUGHT
#1: Oct 17th 2016 at 6:12:56 AM

Everyone has a sort of card. It's not a literal, physical thing, of course. It's a record of your past, of your personality, of every decision you've ever made. It's a metaphysical bingo card of everything that makes you you. But today, some of those things that make you you happened to line up in some cosmic ball cage, and BINGO! A man with a briefcase stepped out of a door that wasn't there less than a moment before. He stood before you with a double-sided bingo sheet. One side shows a series of events and facts in your life lining up. The other is blank, save for a five-letter word in capital letters at the top.

He makes you an offer: If you can fill out the blank side of the sheet he has, you'll be granted a once-in-a-lifetime free zero-consequence chance to alter reality itself, no terms and conditions applied. In layman's terms- fill it out, get a wish. To help you fill it out, he's going to let you make that five-letter word your own... whatever that means. Of course, he's made the same offer to a lot of people. People who might stop you from filling out your card. Some of them might not even be entirely human anymore. As he hands you two more bingo cards- MORAL and CRIME- he wishes you luck and steps back through the door.

The game takes place on Oomuri Island, a little blot of land in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Once upon a time, it was a smaller island, uninhabited and unimportant amid the dozens of other islands nearby. Then Globotronics came around. Moving their HQ off-shore as part of a publicity stunt, they assured the general public that this wouldn't harm the island. So far, they are good to their word. Even the artificial land the Globotronics company sank into the ground hadn't messed up the local environment- beyond a few new coral formations settling in. The natural chunk of the island means parks, greenspace, lovely white-sand beaches, and natural habitats for animals. The piles of asphalt and slag Globotronics used to expand the island, however, mean high-density housing, industrial complexes, and warehouses abandoned from the rapid construction and subsequent layoffs. All in all, a unique island, overlooked by the massive Globotronics HQ building. A low crime rate, ethnically diverse population, and ready supply of jobs- whether for Globotronics or local small businesses- make Oomuri Island a wonderful place to live.

Less wonderful, in the opinion of environmentalists, is the quarry just off-center of the island. The source of much of the stone used to build the residential districts, this quarry seems utterly unnecessary and out of place. Nonetheless, it did provide jobs and much-needed stone, and the pools were home to unusual fish.

Okay, so this RP inspired by three parts Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, two parts Legend Heroes. A bunch of everyday citizens, criminals, lawmen, and civil servants are given the opportunity to right something they think is wrong with the world. Maybe a lost love, maybe they want to rule the world, maybe they want to be legally immune to stop signs. The guy with the briefcase doesn't seem to care what. The important question is: just what are you willing to do to get that wish?

Please, highlight the two to five toku tropes that got you chosen.

  • Name:
  • Age:
  • Appearance: In suit and out.
  • Identity: The five-letter word you've claimed in ALL CAPS.
    • Powers: What powers do you get from your five letter word?
  • Personality:
  • Brief Backstory:
  • Your Wish: You don't have to fill out this part publicly if you don't want other players knowing your wish. Still, PM it to me.
  • Other:

The rules are simple:

  • Your Identity is a five letter word in all caps. This is so it can fit on your cosmic bingo card. Any powers you get are derived from this word- CHESS will not give you reality warping powers because your character owns Super Mario Maker.
  • One side of your card is a game representing your backstory- the two-to-five toku backstory cliches (or appearance or personality cliches) that got you a suit. These need not be on the bingo card above, which is only a sample. The other is specific people you need to defeat, listed by their 5-letter word. Getting bingo on the hitlist means you get a midseason powerup.
  • The more you use your powers for good or evil, the more MORAL or CRIME cards you fill out, granting you new powers and equipment.
  • There are a few Identities that aren't open- mostly because I want to use them as villains or they might get a little broken. So far, these are:
    • GRUNT, TOADY, CHEAT, GENIE, MAGIC, CUPID, NAKED, YOUTH, JEWEL, JOUST, DEITY, POWER, CLOCK, CODEX, and STEAM.

...and that's terrible.

  • Name: Mia Rivera
  • Age: 21
  • Appearance: Out of suit, Mia is of an average build and is around 5'7" tall. She wears a lot of casual streetclothes or just straight swimwear, always trying to stay fashionable. When she transforms into BREAK, Mia holds up her Bingo card to her face at an angle in her left hand, brings her right index finger up to draw a straight line across it, then swings both arms down and out to her sides, shattering her human form into shards of glass and revealing the BREAK suit beneath. The suit is a white base, with a flat green helmet, chestpiece, set of shoulderpads, boots, and armguards. A crack pattern in neon green runs from her chin and spreads up her face in a pattern like reverse lightning bolts, and two white eye shapes sit under the V. There is a crack pattern running down her shoulderpads, as well as ones running in rough parallel on her boots and armguards. She has a thick green belt with a round buckle in white with a concentric spiderweb crack on it like a bullet hole in a windshield.
  • Identity: BREAK
    • Powers:
      • BUSTER GLAIVE! Normally just folded up in a stock at her hip, BUSTER GLAIVE is a glaive with a plain green shaft six feet long and a foot-long bladed head in white, decorated with a bright green crack pattern originating from the base of the blade. It can collapse down into a shortsword by turning the handle into an elaborate handguard.
      • BREAK SHIFT! Mia can touch things either with her hands or her glaive to change their durability—either the object becomes extremely fragile to everyone else and unbreakable by her, or the opposite, and it becomes completely indestructible except to her.
  • Personality: Mia is trying to relax as best she can. She knows that stress isn't good for her, and she knows that steely anger and determination won't get her anywhere. She's constantly kind of worried about this whole borderline Death Game scenario, but she's also not going to let it destroy her mind. She throws herself into opportunities to relax and have a good time and get to meet people, and might come across as a little flirty as a result. She believes that overall the world is naturally just, and that the actions of human beings will overall drive the world towards a better tomorrow in spite of wrongdoers saying otherwise.
  • Brief Backstory: Mia grew up in the heartlands of Northern Mexico during the Chiapas Rebellion. She grew up surrounded not only by stories of her own people's heroism, but by the suffering her people endured under American terror and imperialism (RAISED ON STORIES OF HEROES). Her parents were killed in a sudden discovery that they were rebels just shortly after she turned 20 (DEAD PARENTS), and realizing that Mexico had nothing for her anymore (HOMELESS LONER) she set out towards America to find something better. But then that guy gave her this card, and these powers, and she realized she had a chance at something greater: justice. And not just to her, but to everyone the United States had ever wronged.
  • Your Wish: That The United States of America Pay reparations towards all people it has wronged.

Question, do our characters get the slightly superhuman physique most Toku heroes have by default? I didn't include it in the profile because I figured it was a genre convention.

I'm gonna be honest, this is based on my Halloween costume for this year. All toku cliches marked like xTHISx for extra emo factor. Here we go!

  • Name: James Markos
  • Age: 16
  • Appearance:
  • Identity: SONIK
    • Powers
      • SONIK SHOUT: Pretty self-explanatory. James screams with enough force to shatter glass and send people flying across the room.
      • SONIK LUNAR KNIFE: A guandao that James can make appear and disappear as needed. Tends to reserve it for finishing off his foes.
  • Personality: James has trouble forming close attachments to anyone, thanks to a lifetime of bad things happening to the people who do. However, he has absolutely no problem expressing himself, given his raging adolescent hormones, and he does so with reckless abandon, particularly if he's performing on stage or—most commonly—trying to chat up a girl he's into.
  • Backstory: James Markos doesn't have a single memory of his xDEAD PARENTSx. He's spent most of his life bouncing from home to home in the Washington, D.C. area, never lasting more than a couple years in any of them because bad things tend to happen to his foster families. He never understood why until age 13, when he xSAW SOMETHING HE REALLY SHOULDN'T HAVEx after his latest family's house burned down—namely, U.S. Senator Rufus Phillips paying a man in cash for burning the place down. James doesn't know the full circumstances, but he does know that whoever his parents were, they got in Senator Phillips' way and paid the ultimate price.
    • From there, James became a xDRIFTERx, traveling across the United States to try and evade Senator Phillips, but the Senator's criminal connections ran deep. James narrowly escaped attempt after attempt on his life as he traveled up and down the East Coast and into the Midwest. Finally, James ended up in southern California at age 14, a mere week before his birthday, and it was there that he finally found some degree of escape. With little more than a backpack full of supplies, a guitar, a skateboard, and the clothes on his back, James began building a life for himself in San Diego. He now supports himself by playing guitar and screaming in local emo band Muchacha the Bride—no, the name wasn't his idea—but every now and then, the thought of going back to DC and getting some justice comes to mind...
  • Your Wish: Kill Senator Rufus Phillips in revenge for the deaths of his parents—no witnesses, no consequences.
  • Other: Theme song: "Ride the Wings of Pestilence" // From First to Last

  • Name: Ellery "Buster" Capp
  • Age: 16
  • Appearance: out of costume. Buster's an albino. He's not really sensitive about it. He thinks it makes him look more sinister, and helps with the whole pretty boy thing he's got going on.
  • Identity: WATER
    • Powers:
      • Aqua Body:
      • Aqua Shot:
  • Personality:
  • Brief Backstory: After his dad died in a mining accident, his mom sold him into indentured servitude. He now works as a janitor whenever he's not in school.
  • Wish: To rule the world.
  • Other: Enjoys flipping people off and thinks he's good at it insofar as how good you can be at flipping people off. It's a bit like a non-verbal catch phrase. Theme song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnbAc6AHvYY . He plays it to get pumped right before he exerts himself. It might be a placebo effect, but he thinks of it as a theme tune power-up.

  • Name: James 'Jesse' Armitage
  • Age: 19
  • Appearance: As a civilian, James stands at 5'8, possessing a lithe body type that he tends to hide under layers of clothing. At all times. he wears no less than an undershirt, t-shirt, and some form of jacket depending on the weather. His hair is usually left untouched, a mass of dreadlocks that are only quelled by a hat or the occasional impromptu ponytail. To transform into ABYSS, James reads the appropriate words on his Bingo card before pressing it to his face, shadowy tendrils slithering forth from it and around his body to overtake his human form and create the ABYSS suit from the mass. The suit consists of thin armor plating on his chest, shoulders, arms, and knees; all a sickly green color and adorned with small red jewel-like spheres. Shadows fill in the spaces between the armor. The 'helmet' he attains covers his entire head, being the same color as the rest of the suit, however it sports six of the red spheres, arranged to look like two rows of eyes staring in every direction. It's a swirling mess of green and black to put it lightly, and it's only through his shape and visible limbs that ABYSS can still be seen as humanoid.
  • Identity: ABYSS
    • Powers:
      • ABYSS SNATCHER!: A chain whip that is wound around the the hip of the suit acting like a belt, it has twelve segments linked together and retains the same coloration and adornment as the suit - giving it the illusion of being part of ABYSS, much like a tentacle.
      • CRAWLING ABYSS!: James can cling onto and climb any surface that he can touch, to the point of walking up walls and ceilings with only his feet.
  • Personality: James is lazy, that's the first thing anyone would notice about the young man. He lacks motivation and a clear direction in life. He's the kind to always spout off about the next big thing he's going to try to accomplish but never actually does. This war he's found himself in, these battles for a wish, have thrust an unavoidable goal upon him, and he's trying to take it as seriously as he can. As an amateur writer (and not quite as good as he thinks), James gets lost in introspective thoughts around others when his imagination flares up, giving him an aloof, if not rude, sense about him. He tries to be friendly enough to people to make up for that.
  • Brief Backstory: James grew up in El Paso, Texas, a sheltered child with busy uncaring parents, he was enrolled in a private school and spent most of his time learning (Parental Issues). What little free-time became available to him was spent maintaining a number of hobbies, chief among was writing and collecting horror novels. He never knew what attracted him so much to the genre, just that it was an escape from the drudgery that life soon became. However, it could only do so much, and at the age of sixteen, James began to actively rebel against his ghost-like parents, flunking classes on purpose and finding ways to draw attention to himself in all the worst possible ways. It got so bad that finally, he was sent to live with his grandmother, who was residing on Oomuri Island in her retirement (All Knowing Grandmother). He wouldn't go back to school and began to close himself off to the rest of the world (NEET), only slowing coming back due to his grandmother and finding inspiration in the same stories that helped him through childhood.
  • Your Wish: To write the greatest horror novel in the world, and finally have a purpose of his own.
  • Others: James is well-off monetary wise, his grandmother and parents may have worked/still work for Globotronics (if that works story-wise) or some other such entity. And to invoke One-Steve Limit, he'll go by Jesse in posts to avoid confusion.

  • Name: Elliot Wells
  • Age: 16
  • Appearance: Out of costume Elliot stands at 1.68, he has a slouch posture and has bags under his eyes with his eyes half open as if he was too tired, if he sees something he likes he straightens his posture and his eyes open fully. Elliot transforms into ACCEL by pulling out his bingo card, which he has folded in the shape of a roll, places it in his waist and as if was a motorcycle handlebar he squeezes it, the roll of paper turns red and lines begin surrounding Elliot´s body forming its armor; as the lines go faster and faster some burn and leave green segments that the red armor is supposed to cover The costume
  • Identity: ACCEL
  • Powers:
  • Accel boost: appart from making Elliot faster than the average human, with the Accel boost he can boost his already impressive speed for a short moment
  • Accel boots: these are the primary weapons of Elliots that appart of protecting his feets againts extreme friction, come with retractable talons that let him use them as a slashing weapon, also he can use the exhaust on his boots as a close range flamethrower
  • Personality: Elliot is an listless person, not caring about anything that he doesnt consider important or that will affect him (Blah, Blah, Blah) he likes to avoid troublesome things so he usually just follow the flow (The Slacker) , but when push comes to shove Elliot is ready to give all his effort to defend the things he likes (Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass)

  • Brief Backstory: Son of rich real state enterpreneur, he enjoyed his peacefull life doing wharever pleased him at the moment (Spoiled Brat), this changed when his father made a bad move and lost a susbstantial amount of money, while not enough that they would be left in extreme proverty, they had to sacrifice many commodities and sacrifice their free time by getting part time jobs, Elliot wished to obtain a life where he could do whatever he wanted without problems like lack of money, thats when he found a certain man waiting outside of one of his part time jobs,

Eesh, looks like we've got a bunch of Villain Protagonists here... and I can't say this guy's any different, really.

  • Name: Bob Jones
  • Age: 22
  • Appearance
    • Civvies: He's rather thoroughly unmemorable in appearance- not particularly attractive or ugly, not fat or skinny, musculature's pretty average, and so on. About 5'8" tall.
    • Suited: Significantly larger than his civilian form (around 6'4" and noticeably muscular), with bright white armored segments attached to basically every part of his body. These segments each have between two and five "prongs" on one end (the back of his helmet, for example, has three on top). His helmet has large, blue, insectoid lenses for him to see through. He wears a belt resembling some sort of eating utensil bent into an oval.
  • Identity: SPORK
  • Personality: A deeply envious individual, Bob craves the adolation (or at least acknowledgement beyond "walking punchline") of his peers and many of the "finer things in life." He's frequently seen with a deeply unamused expression due to his continuous misfortune, escalating to outright exasperation when he's having a particularly bad day.
  • Brief Backstory: Bob has lived on Oomuri Island his entire life. His spectacularly bad luck has rendered him a source of amusement to all around him (COMIC RELIEF), usually at his expense (VICTIM). Almost everyone has given up on him making something out of his life (UNDERDOG), and he has taken to motorcycling to help him unwind from the stress of his life (DRIVES A MOTORCYCLE). When an odd man appeared to offer him a wish during one of these rides, he was rather skeptical, but decided to give it a try anyway on the logic of not having anything to lose outside of being the butt of YET ANOTHER joke. Oddly enough, accepting the odd man's offer was, itself, on his Card: HAS SUPERPOWERS.
  • Your Wish: Becoming important... by ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
  • Other: His Identity is more the product of a whim than anything; he kind of wishes he took it more seriously, but finds his equipment versatile enough that he wouldn't trade it in for a new one, even if it's incredibly silly. And yes, his powers basically amount to "very well-armed."

I did not expect to have cause to use the line "STOP DROPPING YOUR ASSES!" but DQ 11 gave it to me.

Hi Taco! Been a while!

Anyway, on the subject of Kamen Rider and swarms of jackass Riders... Ryuki counts, right? I mean, one is explicitly a serial killer, and... well, basically the only unambiguously heroic one is the title character, from what I've heard.

  • Name: Alma Berringer
  • Age: 34
  • Appearance:
    • As Alma: Alma is a short, malnourished women with long, unkempt greasy hair. Her eyes were once bright blue but now are sunken. She wears a battered over coat over several layers of t-shirts and jackets. She wears a leg brace and her voice sounds quite honestly like gravel ran through a garbage disposal. Her teeth are yellow and her tongue is stained black.
    • As the Mourner: She gains a relatively light set of black armor, her helmet is in the shape of 16th century knight's helm. with a mourning veil draped over it. It honestly resembles medieval version of a swat team uniform mixed with a gothic lolita's. She has several dark crimson roses growing out of each of her shoulder pauldrons.
  • Identity: MOURN
  • Powers:
    • Blade of the Mourner-A Rapier who's hand gaurd is stylized to resemble a rose with a black blade. The thorns on the handgaurd allow it to function as a pair of knuckledusters.
    • Sarita- An ebony flintlock pistol. It does not need to be reloaded, only cocked once more to activate.
    • Dark Traversal- The Mourner can dissolve and reappear into a black mist, allowing her to sink into cracks that would otherwise be impossible to access. She cannot attack nor can she be attacked in this form.
  • Personality: Alma is sarcastic, cynical and somewhat off. Her constant smoking and drug abuse has given her a gravelly voice, and has made her find most things in the world nihilistic. The only thing she realm seems to enjoy is combat. However, much like her old self, Alma is extremely willing to help people.
  • Brief Backstory: Alma didn't ask for any of this. She didn't want to fail her family's long history of military service by being ejected during Don't Ask, Don't tell. But she did. It was a nurse, Sarita. Her name was. They were so happy. And then, suddenly? Sarita was pregnant. Alma was going to be a mother. She was so happy that they ate out. But then? Alma had a bit too much to drink.
Within a month, she was homeless and alone. When she got her card, she was sitting on the edge of a bridge. But now? She possibly can make things right.,,
  • Your Wish: Bring back her pregnant wife.
  • Other: An Anti-hero. Not a Villainprotagonist.
