Not sure which board is the most fitting for this, but I figure I'll go with wiki talk for now. If it's more fitting to another board, please move it there.

Apparently characters who are canonically 16 are considered acceptable in page images for sex-related tropes, even though in real life, that's below the age at which you're considered old enough to be involved in live-action pornography. I get that it's not equivalent to it in every sense or anything, but I would think that would be as meaningful a basis of comparison as anything else. If not, by what standard do we draw the line at 16, and why?

As long as the source work is considered appropriate for mainstream viewing, I don't think that images from it should be a problem. If the work is censored or given an Adult rating, then I would be more cautious.

[up] But when we call something "fanservice" or the like, are we not the ones then claiming "erotic" value to it, whether the writers/animators do or not?

Do you have any specific images in mind? I refuse to work from hypotheticals. If you think that an image is too suggestive for the age of its subjects, then you are welcome to start an Image Pickin' topic for it.

I'm referring specifically to the anime subpage of Ms Fanservice, which the thread I linked to was about, though I didn't create that thread.

However, I've since come across other page image characters who happen to be teenage characters (Dominatrix has a page image character who, according to another wiki, is canonically either 16 or 17) and this thread is meant to ask more generally why the line's drawn at 16, instead of at 18 like it is for porn.

Would it be reasonably obvious to someone viewing the images that the characters depicted are 16? I certainly can't tell.

Numerical ages are not a good guidance for this. For one thing, people tend to bring the age of consent into the assessment and mileage varies strongly about that one.

As I said in that thread, a better guidance is that things that look like children should better be avoided.

[up] "Looks like children" is a rather subjective guideline itself, especially in a medium where grown women are drawn with big eyes. At least canon ages are official.

Anyway, you are welcome to submit Image Pickin' topics to change the images if they concern you. There seems to be no particular reason to prefer anime images for those articles.

[up] There is for anime subpages in particular, though.

I'll start a new thread for dominatrix.
