To Boldly Go Beyond - A Crossover in Space (Signup Thread)

Strat: I, uh, made a separate post for the Irkens about five posts earlier than my character signup.

I promised a second page for the pirates mentioned in Moloch's signup, so here it is.

• Name: Utraghans (AKA "space pirates◊")
• Homeworld: Urtraghs (status, unknown)
• Known Territory: Wherever they are.
• Founded: Various (and typically temporary) bases on out of the way planets or moons, otherwise unknown.
• Demographics: An unknown number of clans scattered through the cosmos.
• Leaders: Typically a single chieftain leads their clan with a varied number of advisers and sub-leaders under them. But as a race there is no known leadership.
• History: Much of Utraghan history has been lost to the ravages of time and further muddled by the various clan's lack of extended contact with each other and at times conflicting viewpoints. One thing is widely agreed by the species though, that at one time they had their own home world and empire, but it fell at some point and as a result it's people was scattered. Their contact with the EA has been at best sporadic and largely limited to small to medium sized combat vessels seen attacking supposedly soft targets such as civilian or merchant vessels.
• Details:

The Utraghans are an aggressive race of somewhat insectoid bipedal creatures living on the fringes of galactic civilization who's primary goals seem to be raiding others for resources or scavenging what they can from abandoned spacecraft or terrestrial facilities. Perhaps unknown to the EA is that the Utraghans are at this point basically a race of scattered space nomads searching for their ancestral home for untold generations.

Their culture praises personal strength and rank in a clan or class is typically based on martial prowess, meaning that the chief is usually the toughest member out of the entire clan... With the notable drawback that challenges for succession are rather common and a change in leadership frequently is followed by a change in the clan's priorities, this is likely a strong factor for why an Utraghan clan rarely (if ever) establish bases or homes for more than a few generations before packing up and moving on.

Despite changes in leadership, thus far Utraghan opinion toward other races and cultures has unfailingly been to consider them either a resource, or an obstacle. They very rarely engage in trade (though some chieftains have had a fancy for receiving tribute), and when they do it is almost solely with another clan, at which point they may share gathered information on space that they've explored with each other in hopes of narrowing their search for their homeworld.

However, it may be possible that not every clan of the Utraghan race follows these typical behaviors... and the universe is a very large place.

And yes, I don't mind if other people want to suggest or make clans of these guys

Name: Kaywinnit Lee Frye (Kaylee for short)

Age: 19-ish

Appearance:"No power in the verse can stop me."

Role: Engineer

Personality: Kaylee is friendly, trustworthy, optimistic and endlessly cheerful. She always sees the best in people, and will place her trust in them quite easily. She is protective of whatever machines she is working on, getting angry when they are insulted. She tends to personify ships, saying things like "they just talk to her.", though considering what is mentioned below, it is likely that this goes beyond mere personification. The only thing which can cut through the cheerfulness is if her ship is damaged in a way that she cannot fix. She loves strawberries. She is quite open when it comes to things like sex. Though she will not talk constantly about it, she is not shy about mentioning it, and definitely not afraid to do it. She also will shamelessly check out people of both genders. She professes a love of pretty things.

Skills: Kaylee is an excellent engineer, with particular skill in improvising solutions to normally crippling problems quickly. She is decently gymnastic, and can move quite quickly when she needs to. She is quite intelligent, but due to being uneducated, her knowledge base is quite small. She is not a terrible shot, but prefers to stay away from guns if possible.

Powers and Abilities: Kaylee is a machine empath, and quite a strong one. This allows her to diagnose and fix problems before others are even aware that they exist, as machines talk to her in voices that only she seems able to hear. Though she usually has to talk to a machine first, when there is a ship-threatening problem, the ship itself will be screaming at her. This can force her into a BSOD if bad enough. Her abilities tend to influence sentient robots and AI's reactions to her, as they tend to not see her as a biological being. Some will trust her more readily, others will ignore her and some won't treat her like she is human. It is unknown where her abilities come from, as she appears to have no alien DNA, or any other kind of enhancement, making her an enigma to scientists.

Bio: Kaylee was born a worker at a starship repair yard on a backwater planet, and grew up helping her father. She often wishedto go into space, and was given her opportunity when a EA shuttle crashlanded on the planet. After helping tthe pilot repair his engine and become spaceworthy again, he offered her the chance to go to the Academy to study engines. She took the offer, bit had serious issues at the Academy, as she had almost no background schooling. Her theory work was terrible, but she excelled at practical work. She managed to pass based on her practical grades, and her ability to think outside the box when faced with problems caught the attention of the EA, so she was posted to the Verne as a way of being prepared for anything that might come.

Additional Information: Despite her posting being a matter of logic, there is an urban legend that the true reason that she was picked was because the Verne itself chose her, by placing her name on every available display and refusing to do anything else until she was put on the crew list. This is, naturally, a complete fabrication. But it is more popular than the actual explaination. The other rumour is that she slept her way into it. This is usually spread by people who are convinced that, with her lack of education, she couldn't have gotten it otherwise. Being caught spreading this rumour at the Academy is viewed as a form of suicide, as a couple of the older students (in particular ace pilot Hoburn Washbourne, crack shot Zoe Washbourne, natural officer material Malcolm Reynolds and dumb-as-a-doorknob-but-someone-you-would-want-on-your-side-in-a-fight Jayne Cobb) are very protective of Kaylee, and tend to not appreciate people being mean to or about her. Because of this, the first rumour is the more commonly known of the two.

• Name: Akihiro 'Deadliar' Tsumura (?)
• Age: The Ageless, appears to be in mid-20's
• Species: Human(?)
• Appearance:
• Role: Security Officer
• Personality: A down-to-earth, nonchalant man, Deadliar strives to get business done before anything else. No one exactly knows how he functions or thinks, leading him to getting his first nickname, Black Box. He's also pretty sarcastic, dishing out witty one-liners every once in a while. Being an operative of the organization known as Graveyard, (Executor) he seems to know much about a type of hostile robots known as Prayers and their base of operations, the Cardinal Shaft. He is also somewhat pessimistic, remarking upon the newer Executors in the Graveyard that they joined only simply to "surround themselves around heroes", and to "cling on to their lineage of heroes".
• Skills:
  • Combat experience: Being one of the three oldest surviving operatives employed by the Graveyard, it's no surprise he has some amount of combat experience. He, despite his average abilities as an Executor, with his experience and skill make him the most likely to be chosen when exploring the unknown. Many are bewildered to see that he always manages to come back in one piece. Some have joked that he is really dead, but lying about being alive, hence the nickname "Deadliar." Deadliar was part of the first expedition to the Cardinal Shaft and almost reached the core but was trapped in Prayer territory when the mission failed. Only when six months later the second expedition he took the opportunity to escape. How he managed to survive those six months is anyone's guess.
• Powers and Abilities:
  • Faint Ones: As an Executor, Deadliar possesses the ability to manipulate microscopic spirits/creatures known as Faint Ones, in the fashion that he's shooting a linear stream of projectiles. He can also exert more power to make his projectiles pierce anything, allowing him to hit multiple targets at once.
  • Linear Blades: Essentially Blades Below The Shoulder, the Linear Blades can create shockwaves capable of cutting most things, even durable metal- However, it requires a charge time, and to make the shockwaves sharper, they must be charged longer. The intervals for charge levels are 1 sec, 2 sec, 3 sec, and 3 minutes. Any charging between 3 seconds and 3 minutes will not affect the shockwave.
  • Misteltoe: Togari-Maru, an artificially-made crystal fairy thing with a sentience of its own, can also aid Deadliar by throwing herself (literally) into her targets. Once detached from Deadliar, she can then form a chain connecting Deadliar and Togari-Maru and an aura surrounding the latter, both made out of Faint Ones, able to do damage to anyone in contact with it.
• Bio:
  • Akihiro Tsumura grew up in a space station located somewhere around Venus. With his parents working in an organization known as the Earth Alliance, he was often alone and found entertainment in learning about the Earth Alliance. As a result, he looked up to them as a future occupation. When he was 10, he started displaying signs of being an Executor. No one knew about this except for Akihiro’s parents, who were worried about him being overwhelmed by scientists and investigators.
  • Fast forward 25 years. By then, Akihiro, now ‘Deadliar’, had become an operative of the Graveyard, an organization founded to rid the world of Prayers, hostile robots whose main base of operations seemed to be the Cardinal Shaft, a part of an astronomically giant device located on the artifical island “Paradise” near the coast of Japan. The Graveyard has attempted to access the Cardinal Shaft on two occasions and were repelled by the Prayers on both, with Deadliar being trapped inside after the first attempt for six months. Later, when the second expedition group came, Deadliar saw this as an opportunity to escape and did so successfully.
  • In the third attempt, he and the rest of the Graveyard finally succeeded in raiding the Cardinal Shaft, with reinforcements from the Earth Alliance. Deadliar and Togari-Maru breached in, going ahead of their group and reaching Paradise. He then proceeded to power through the Cardinal Shaft, only to find a supercomputer known as Garland and a white cat which Deadliar proceeded to name “Amber”.
  • After the raid, there were no more signs of any Prayers, and Deadliar proceeded to resign from the organization, with Togari-Maru tagging along. Amber was returned to her original owner, a representative of the Earth Alliance. He then settled on Earth and proceeded to look for further jobs. Some time later, Akihiro was contacted by the very same representative, the owner of Amber about being a Security Officer aboard USS Verne due to having contributed greatly to limiting the Prayer outbreak. Having no qualms about seeking adventure, he was soon assigned.

• Additional Info: Other characters may have heard of the Graveyard or not. Make that of what you will.

Hey, we already have a lot of Security officers. It'd be nice if you chose any of the other areas, but if it only fits with Security, that's okay.

How does Communications Officer or Chief Military Officer sound?

@Nagisa Stick: We actually have both of those positions filled out too. Listen, if you can't come up with anything else, just stick with Security. Don't let that get in the way of your character!

@secretlyasuperhero: Some changes- I'd like for Kaylee to have to actually talk to the machines in the ship (so no going 'I talked and immediately know the issue and how to fix it'), and the part about machines trusting her easily needs change because we have players with robots. How about... they don't see her as a biological being? Which means some machines would ignore her, some would warm up to her, and some wouldn't treat her like a human.
