No, you're right, I didn't read the trope pages, Real-World Episode seems to have now a part that states that the characters have to come from a preexisting fictional work, but nowhere in Refugee from TV Land states that it has to be characters of a show withing a show, so it looks exatly like a copy of Real-World Episode.

Someone needs to change the description of Refugee from TV Land and maybe even the tittle to something like Itchy And Scratchy Meet The Simpsons; but not quite, since it makes it seem like their "real world" has to be that of a preexisting fictional work like the simpsons, which isn't the case with enchanted or back to gaya.

That or just merge both tropes, or maybe find another thing that differentiates both of them.

EDIT: Or, you know, maybe just merge it all into one trope page explaining there are different types, using a format like this Eagleland, or this Sliding Scale of Anti-Villains, or this I Can Live With That (or something like that, those were some of the first results that came in google looking for "tv tropes" and "types", but there are many trope pages that have that format).

Page Crowner went solidly against that. We are in the Final Action phase now.
  1. Approve of sandbox descriptions
  2. Move examples to the correct page
  3. Fix wicks to point to the correct page

Bump.

Also, asking again since my last attempt was at the bottom of the page: Is there any case where "fictional" characters enter a "real" world that wouldn't hit one of the two tropes?

I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.

[up]Maybe if the fictional characters went to a world that was like the real world (no fantastical elements that the characters are used to) but the world they end up in doesn't actually include them as fiction? Say, if Superman ended up in a world where there were no real superheroes, but superhero comic books existed- except Superman.

I don't know; that would seem to fall under a supertrope like Alternate Universe instead. Can I get some [tup]/[tdown] on the sandboxes and their clarification?

[up] Sandboxes look good, but the RFTVL one is phrased a bit awkwardly at the beginning.

Thank you, Bwburke94. I'm sorry to say that I don't know how to make it less awkward.

Anyone else want to comment on Sandbox.Real World Episode and Sandbox.Refugee From TV Land?

I just read the Real World Episode sandbox, and it seems like the first paragraph says that Real World Episodes have a lot of Lampshade Hanging...and then the second paragraph contradicts that and says Lampshade Hanging is rare with Real World Episodes. I found that confusing.

I have an idea for how to make Refugee from TV Land a little less awkward:

The work opens with one setting, and introduces several characters living there. But after establishing this outer setting, the narrative switches to yet another setting within the first one, a Show Within a Show with its own, separate cast. The characters from this Show Within a Show, due to some Applied Phlebotinum, manage to find their way out to the first setting and meet the characters we were introduced to there. The intended effect is to make the audience believe that the characters have broken through the Fourth Wall and entered your reality.

What do you think?

First bit, ahhhh, that's my mistake; I'll look at it again later.

Second bit; I like your suggestion.

Bump. Also...

[up][up] Certainly looks better. I still feel it can be a bit more concise, but we can worry about that later.

~bwburke94: Because the descriptions haven't been rewritten and no example cleanup has taken place.

Real-World Episode sounds like it's limited to an episode. Refugee from TV Land can last longer.

RWE also sums the difference well enough: "This trope is related to, but distinct from, Refugee From TV Land. In Refugee from TV Land, a character is pulled out of a Show Within a Show, whereas a Real World Episode concerns characters the viewers have been following for some time prior to this, and no indication had yet been given that they were in fact fictional (other than the fact that they, y'know, exist in a TV series, movie, book, comic, or video game)."

Is there any problem with this?

That's the clarification that the crowner voted on. The examples on-page and the wicks must be verified.

Crown Description:

Refugee From TV Land and Real World Episode have been discussed in a trs thread for several months. For clear consensus, we need a crowner vote.

The options are mutually exclusive, so only the option which is both 2:1 (or better) and the highest positive ratio will be enacted.
