Even without it, I think it's plain to see that's a fairly big torch with only one tiny flame coming out of it.

Is that really necessary?
Although panel three here is lighter, maybe we should use that. Or would the darker one work better in this case?

I don't think the preceding two panels are necessary, and the darker panel actually helps with the expression of the trope.
3 looks good.
