So I picked up the entire Men in Black trilogy recently and remembered we only have threads for the third movie and the animated series here. So, here's a general thread for everything Men in Black!

I think it would be kind of interesting to legitimately have J be the new K for a new rookie character if they ever decided to make a fourth MIB film.

So what's up with this Mi B/21 Jump Street crossover I've been hearing about?

I was waiting for someone to bring that up.

My theory right now is that two dudes over at Sony were like

GUY 1: "Hey, you know what would be funny."

GUY 2: "What?"

GUY 1: "What if we crossed Men in Black with 21 Jump Street?"

GUY 2: "I think that's a pretty fucking stupid ide-"

And before guy 2 could finish, a spontaneous parade took place in the office and we never got to hear guy 2's entire thought.

Sounds legit.

But then, I thought it was a fucking stupid idea to make a 21 Jump Street movie, and as a comedy starring Jonah Hill at that. Mind you, I don't know if I was truly proven wrong since I never got around to watching the movies, but apparently they're good, so... eh? Whatever it takes to satiate a suit's crippling coke addiction.

Right now all I know is that those rumors years back about a Die Hard/24 crossover sound infinitely more appealing and rational.

Well when you think about it, it does kinda make sense. They're both comedic deconstructions of usually serious ideas (Men in Black with alien invasions and 21 Jump Street with cop movies), so maybe it makes more sense than I'm giving it credit for.

I;m just stunned that the actual sequel is nuttier than the fake ones from the last one's ending credits.

I hope that it ties into the fake 23 JS and that the cops are undercover at med school when they come across a hurt alien and that's how they get involved in mib stuff

Whee! ^.^ I've always felt MIB was a story ripe for franchising.

The 90's honestly had a bunch of premises that could easily be expanded to encompass all kinds of stories and characters but were relegated to being purely a vehicle for one or two star actors instead.

It was, kind of.

It got a cartoon that was implied to be the "real" story of agent J and K while the movies were in u inverse films the M.I.B got made to further the masquerade.

Yes, which was basically the same thing "The Real Ghostbusters" did, but I'm talking about expanding the world outside J and K. MIB is a prime setup to have multiple stories about all kinds of different agents operating within this universe.

Which is basically what this spinoff is doing.

Was feeling it. Thompson and Hemsworth have great chemistry as usual, Liam Nissan is great as an authority figure, now if the plot catches up with them, it should be fine.

Annnnd now that I've had time to actually watch that trailer... they Chick-ified, Liam Neeson-fied, and even Thor-ified this franchise. It could just be the lack of Will Smith but this is feeling a little too spin-offish (tm) for me. But I will keep a cautious eye on this.

  • I doubt Smith or Jones would have come back for another movie anyway. Both are pushing, what, 50-60 now? I doubt that we had a Younger K played by a different actor in the last film just because the writers felt like doing something new.
  • So the roles have been reversed again with our lead character being competent and their partner being daft.
  • I saw two paintings, one depicting J and K fighting the bug monster from the first one, and the second... I'm not sure what that was.
  • I forgot Zed died in the last film. Never checked to see if his actor died or if he just wasn't coming back for the movie.
  • I love that they can still reuse the same building for each film.

I'm hyped. The absence of Jones and Smith doesn't bother me in the least, because MiB has always struck me as a film that could be franchised pretty easily. It's not a movie that necessarily has to be a vehicle for Jones and Smith, because the premise is pretty expansive.

It's not like, say, Bourne, where the story of Jason Bourne is about Jason Bourne and the various things that happen to Jason Bourne. The universe and everything interesting revolves around Jason Bourne. He is the beginning and end of why the story exists. It rises and falls with him.

MiB is about a peacekeeping organization. J and K are two cool agents in the organization that do cool things, but the nature of the premise is that there are hundreds of other cool agents who do cool things too. J and K are a small piece of a larger world. It would be effortless to make an MiB movie without J and K by just making it about different agents.

As K asserted in the first film, there is always an alien battle cruiser or a Corellian death ray or an intergalactic plague intended to wipe out life on the planet. This is just what the job is, not just for him but for every single agent. Not every story in the MiB universe has to be about him and J.

The only reason the series hasn't franchised before now is because the first movie came out in 1997, back when interesting film premises were just seen as vehicles to put popular stars onscreen. The same issue holding Ghostbusters back - it's "A Bill Murray Movie" instead of a cool setting with engaging characters - has condemned MiB to a quagmire of garbage sequels that suck to varying degrees as stories but sure do manage the job of putting Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith on a screen for two hours.

International looks to change all that by treating MiB as a story worth telling in its own right, and I'm excited for it.

This does look interesting.

I like how the rookie gets in by tracking them down instead of being recruited. That's a good way to prove your worthy.

J had to chase down an Incephalopod (sp) on foot to get in, but this girl came to them. But then again, you prove you're worthy of being in the MIB as much as you make them think you deserve a chance so it's not a shock.

I agree with Tobias that this is a franchise ripe for it's own wide universe. Maybe we'll see a new animated series too. Like some kind of anthology.

Hell, they could probably do a live action or Netflix series if they wanted.

I will say that I wouldn't mind a cameo from Smith and Jones as well. We got them in that picture but I'd love to hear J lampshade that he had a crazy first day on the job too.tongue
