Hmm, the previous character would fit into a depressing story. Wait a minute, I got an idea.

...

Yep, I'm going to have to use that character again, hold on.

BRACE YOURSELVES FOR SIR LAWRENCE!

Hmm, maybe a different one...

Oh hell, I'll just make you pick. Hey, can my character be a henchman of a villain that's going undercover? If not, then my character will be an ordinary person that's a garbage collector by day and amateur crime fighter by night like a Kick-Ass guy. If not, then my character will be a former corrupt cop that wants to atone for his crimes by beating the shit out of criminals. If not, then my character is some psychologically traumatized vigilante that takes out his hate on bad guys. If not, then my character will be someone who does awesome shit for the hero worship. If not then my character will have... so many powers like you guys have with standard backstories!

Ooh, maybe he can be partners with Felix, seeing as they're both (I assume) unpowered but skilled individuals?

Undercover spy: I'll have to say no.
There is some straaaange garbage to be found under the city. And especially under the undercity. So that can be pretty entertaining.
Corrupt cop on atonement trip may work too.
Crazy vigilante and showboater are leaning on the badder side.

I'll select the garbage man as the hero, but I'll complete his profile later because I'll have to do something today. But I'll leave a few details about my ideas for his profile.

He's a college dropout with a lot of problems with the educational system some of which are imaginary but some of which are real. To support himself he managed to land a job at the garbage disposal company as a garbage collector with the help of his uncle who works as a manager there.

However, our guy finds out that besides having to pick up the trash he encounters dead bodies that are left inside dumpsters. Shocked at this revelation, the guy goes to his uncle and tells him about this, but his uncle replies that this happens all the time in Emerald City and there's nothing they can do about it.

The guy was still determined to set things right, so he donned on a balaclava (which ironically makes him look more like a criminal than a hero) and took a baseball bat as his main weapon. Amazingly, he managed to beat the bad guys on his first day when he ambushed them, but he accidentally killed one of them and sent the rest to the hospital. Luckily, the guy managed to bail out and hide it out before the cops came to search for him.

Despite this mishap of his, the guy is still willing to don his balaclava again and fight crime. Yet he questions whether he should be really doing this or let the professionals handle the work for him. Either way he wishes that people would be more active in dealing with crime.

[up][up]No, I prefer a character that you can relate to even if he is horrendously underpowered rather than the same hyper-competent superhero that you can imagine in the comic books. I feel that it adds something more unique to the story since you're putting a person with no special powers and experience in the middle of danger so he is forced to rely more on his common sense or risk getting savagely beaten up by his superior opponents.

That would add more taste and dimension to the story. I don't want to aim for an everyday-ish guy with a bland personality, just want to add a real person or at least try to make one. Let's see what I can do...

[up]You fucking read my mind there pal. evil grin

    Name

  • Name: Timothy Wardroper ("I am the one who drops.")

    • Superhero Aliases: Timothy is the kind of guy that can never make up his mind, so as a result he has many superhero aliases which serve as a source of confusion for those who just met him. Most people don't call him anything, if they want to call him something they refer to him as "some dude at night rushed me and beat me with a stick" or "some random asshole hit me at the back of the head before I could react" or "the motherfucking cunt who fucked me up" so Timothy has no official superhero name.

      • Batman, named himself this due to his excessive use of his baseball bat. BATMAN! NANANANANANANANANANANANANANANANANANANA.

      • The Mask, attributes this to his balaclava. SMOKING!!!!!!

      • Incognito/Anonymous, for his identity is concealed. We are anonymous...

      • Watchman, for his eyes are always on the lookout for injustice.

      • The Phantom, for he is darker than darkness.

      • Street Warden, for the streets are his prison.

      • Phantasm, for danger is an illusion.

      • Road Warrior, for the highways are conquered.

      • The Voiceless Protector, for kindness may be silent.

    Personality

  • Personality: A sensitive soul that only wishes for the best for mankind, but the tragedies of life disappoint him to no end.

    • Cynical: Many people have been kind to him, but many have been cruel to Timothy as well. This shook his confidence in the goodness of mankind so he automatically expects the worst from people as a self-defense mechanism to prepare himself for disaster.

    • Fearless: Unable to comprehend a dangerous situation? Check. Casually takes out a bunch of random criminals? Check. Puts himself in danger every five minutes without a second thought? Check. That's something that makes Timothy weird, what would make most people quiver in fear given that they don't have superpowers doesn't seem to faze him. He is either in the category of the truly stupid or he is absolutely batshit crazy.

    • Impulsive: Timothy is extremely susceptible to emotional influence and is compelled to use his feelings when it comes to judging something. This is somewhat paradoxical for a man who carries a considerable intellect but to Timothy he can find no reason not to give sympathy to someone especially in dire circumstances.

    • Sensitive: Beneath his rough exterior and behind all of his skepticism lies a soft heart that finds no shortage of compassion. This side of his personality is difficult to find, and it is rarely shown to others.

    • Shrewd: While he is not the most cunning fellow in existence he ranks among the smarter people in the world that are able to think on the fly when necessary.

    Description

    Backstory

  • Backstory:

    • Early Troubles (Ages 0-15) - Timothy was born in a middle-class family that was buried deep in debt. His parents had to pay their student loan, mortgage, and credit card debt. Timothy was a troubled kid who experienced a few traumatic incidents in his childhood. These could have all been avoided if Timothy just went along with business as usual, but he was unfortunate enough to be there at the wrong place at the wrong time.

      • Adultery: Timothy found that his mother had an affair with the mailman, Scott Wyckerman, who visited their house every once in a while when Timothy bumped into them in the middle of their intercourse. Luckily, neither the mailman nor his mother saw him so he backed away. He decided not to tell his father since that would cause a divorce he didn't want.

      • Bastard: Timothy began to notice similarities between him and Scott, biological similarities. Once Timothy pieced things together, he found out that he inherited some of his physical and mental attributes from the mailman, and that could only be possible if the mailman was his father. This revelation shocked Timothy so he was sent spiraling into a depression. For the first few weeks he refused to go to school before Mr. Wardroper finally got Timothy out of his room by repeatedly scolding him for hours so Timothy was prompted to go to school. Scott protested against the treatment of Timothy, saying that it's always wrong to hurt a child. Timothy felt that the mailman was just another hypocrite since the mailman, his real father, made him a bastard, so he hated him. Throughout his life Timothy had to deal with the fact that he was just another bastard in secret.

      • Emerald City Massacre: One day a madman with a shotgun decided it was open season in Emerald so he wasted no time in loading all his shots on those who were standing in his way. As it so happened, Timothy and his family were out shopping in the mall when the madman came in and started shooting random people as he gradually headed towards the Wardroper family. By the time they figured out what the hell was going on, the madman already had little Timothy on his sights, but he was stopped just in time by the timely interruption of Scott who grabbed the barrel of the shotgun. Timothy was not hit, but another child was. For a few moments they wrestled for control of the shotgun but Scott was beaten back and shot in the face. Timothy had already escaped with his family and ran out of the mall before the police swarmed in and put the madman down like they would with a dangerous animal.

      • Funeral: The Wardroper family attended a public funeral to commemorate those who died in the Emerald City Massacre which totaled about 14. When Timothy was given the opportunity to speak about what he felt he answered with a voice shaking with emotion, "I lost a father today, he didn't just feel like a father to me, he was a real father to me. On this day something precious was taken away from me, and I regret that I never knew the value of what I had until it was taken away from me. From now on, I will hold on to these precious things close to my heart."

      • Psychological Counselling: Ever since the Emerald City Massacre, Timothy has attended psychological counselling and there he met his lifelong friend Jamie Williams, who was always willing to lend an ear to his patients. Timothy was free to spill out his fears and anxieties to Jamie who would listen eagerly and give some honest advice to the problems Timothy was facing. Timothy told Jamie about his illegitimate childhood, his insecurities that built up when he discovered that, and what just exploded in his face during the Emerald City Massacre.

      • Timothy: I'm just a bastard. I'm not right in this world and I never was. I even hated my true father before I realized how important he was to me. I was so caught up hating him that I completely forgot that I loved my father. A person as twisted like me doesn't even deserve to live. A person like me just needs to die.

      • Jamie: Don't you dare say that to me, Timothy. Not in this world. Not ever. You say that you're a bastard. You say that you're a boy that forgot to love his father. You say that you don't deserve to live. I can say that you are a bastard, but you're still right in this world. I can say you have forgotten to love, but that doesn't mean you can't love. I can say that you are twisted, but you don't deserve to die. In fact, you ought to live a full life. You're a strong person, Timothy, don't forget that. You're better than that. I know you're better than that. You just have to believe that you are better than that. You have to believe that you're right in this world. You have to believe that you can love. You have to believe that you can life filled with happiness. If you do those things, then I can assure you that you can live a life worth living. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, Timothy, that's all there is to living a life.

    • High School (Ages 15-18) - The thing about speaking in front of a crowd is that people are bound to listen to you. In this case, many folks at high school knew who Timothy Wardroper was before he came there. "Oh, hey look it's that poor guy who spoke on TV!" "Quiet you, he'll hear you." "Too late, he's close by." His classmates were pretty accomodating and sympathetic to him, and he was well-known in school for what he had gone through. Everybody tried to be nice to him, but Timothy wasn't just in the mood to deal with people right now so he shut them off. Eventually, Timothy warmed up to them once he attended a party and got sick drunk.

      • Mere Participation: Timothy spent his high school days as a withdrawn individual. He didn't do anything notable during these years, but when he slowly mellowed out of his outsiderism, he began speaking with others more frequently. However, he remained a voluntary social outcast throughout high school. Nobody picked on him, since attempts to do so would make the offender look like a total asshole that picked on someone who was already going through a rough phase in his life.

    • Garbage Boy (Ages 18-20) - Timothy didn't want to spend 4 years of his life in tertiary education. That was because he didn't want to waste money just to get a diploma which was just another fancy participation award in his eyes. Despite this rather bold move, this would mean that he would have a big disadvantage in the job market, and he would have to find employment immediately to gain work experience to fill in his lack of a formal education. When he tried to apply for various odd jobs around Emerald, he failed since they were all going to people with more experience or with a diploma. As a last resort, he went to his uncle who was a manager in the city's garbage disposal unit. Through his family connections, Timothy was able to get a job as a garbage collector that earned minimum wage.

    • Vigilantism (Ages 20-32) -

-Later in the story when he becomes a vigilante, Timothy walks into the street corner and bats the first bad guy he sees, but it turns out to his father, Scott Wyckerman! He takes his father home and then questions if he remembers anything. All Scott can remember is that he was shot in the head and here he is! Right in the room of little Timmy. Timothy doesn't want to tell his father that he knows he's his son so he just... wants to tell him later or something.

-When Scott asks him why the hell did Timothy bat him, Timothy had no choice but to reveal his true intentions. Scott tries to pull Timothy out of this, saying that it's too dangerous. Timothy tells Scott his reasons, and that this has to stop.

Scott: There are three types of evil people here, Timothy. The ones who do evil, the ones who just sit and watch, and the ones who fight evil. No matter what you do, there will always be evil people. Don't risk your life for something you can't change. The world is too big for small people like us. We can't do anything but watch as the world slowly destroys itself, but somehow the world manages to stay intact throughout all the carnage. It's just peaceful enough to life a good life, Timothy. Don't throw it all away.

-Timothy wants to do his job anyway, and keep the people of Emerald safe. Scott says that if Timothy is going to do it anyway, then Scott is coming with him. So together they beat up bad guys and fight crime. The city's gangsters become wary of some random asshole beating the fuck out of them for no apparent reason. That's when they gang up on them and start beating the shit out of Tim and Scott. In the ensuing fight, Scott interrupts the guy who tries to shoot Timothy and thus gets shot in the head again, and Timothy goes ape-shit on the gangsters and starts machine gunning the fuck out of them until they are all dead.

-When Timothy

  • The Man With No Name -

(Timothy is unable to decide what name to pick)

Scott: You don't need a name. You don't need a name other than Timothy Wardroper.

-Timothy tried to get into college but failed miserably, so he now works as a garbage collector. But he finds dead bodies inside the dumpsters, and he realizes that evil just never stops coming so he decides to become a vigilante.

    Powers, skills, and gear

  • Powers, skills, gear: A competent fighter that uses dirty tactics to get the job done. He has fought in a lot of real street fights so he knows how to fight pragmatically. However, his tactics are only limited to normal human opponents, so when he has to face enemies that are superior to the foes he has encountered before in terms of firepower, Timothy will be at a point of serious disadvantage so he has to learn how to adapt quickly.

    • Experienced Combatant: Years fighting anonymously in the street as a masked vigilante has granted him a lot of chances to test out techniques and master them.

    • Human Anatomy: Knows where exactly to hit just to destabilize his opponent at least when it comes to it being a human.

    • Physically Fit: Not to the point of an athlete, but he has enough strength and endurance to fight evenly with a strong human opponent.

    • Self-Defense - He has no particular style of martial art, but he developed his own basic fighting techniques.

      • Split Personality: Scott Wyckerman - When in a desperate situation, Scott enters the fold to protect his son and thus Timothy finds the inner resolve to kick the shit out of the bad guys whenever Scott is around to back him up. In reality, he is nearly beaten to death and his body activates a psychological self-defense mechanism against danger that instantly wires up his body to fight with five times his normal strength, speed, and agility.

    Notable Character Traits

  • Notable Character Traits:

    • Wears Tight Clothes: Sometimes he wears a jacket with two shirts underneath on a hot day. This is the reason why he's sweaty most of the time.

    • Sleepyhead: The best sleepaholic out there.

    • Hates Shopping: Or rather he hates going out for long periods of time in general.

    • Culturally and Socially Ignorant: Does not know the most popular celebrities.

    • Forgets Names: He remembers people's faces though.

    • Self-styled Philosopher: At times he thinks himself as this.

    • Loves Isolation: Loneliness is a paradise for him.

    • Non-smoker - "That's a weird way to distribute lung cancer."

    • Frequently Spaces Out - When not in danger, Timothy turns himself off and lets his mind wander around his thoughts. This allows him to piece things together when they don't seem to logically fit.

    • Hates Softdrinks - "I heard they're bad for your health."

    • Good Photographer - One of his unique talents, he can position the camera in beautiful angles and is often praised for taking quality pictures of people.

    • Mild Paranoia - He doesn't border on tinfoil hat territory, but he can be damn superstitious when it comes to any form of danger.

(NOTE: STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION.)

(Hey, can my character be a former gang member during his high school days? In his adult years he changes quite a lot.)

-You know on second thought I wouldn't want my character to be too tragic so I won't exaggerate the stuff. I'm going to make some changes on the backstory.

-Oh fuck it, I love the tragedy. There's too much idealism here so let's Corrupt the Cutie!

.... I might arrive late into the story, because I have a tendency to place character background and depth against the standard cliches of stories. This way takes a lot of time.

A tabletop game like this usually relies more on your abilities to improvise than on having any significant details on your character's history. After you pick out your name, powers, and origin, the player's handbook just suggests choosing two (or more) motivations/complications, and you go from there.

Because ultimately, everything about backstory and personality is effectively worthless compared to the value of sticking to your chosen complications.

Yikes, you're right. Though I'm more motivated to play a character with a solid background story. This stuff is just a personal preference, since I'm accustomed to building up characters.

So like, a few complications from the book that might apply in this case could be like, "Temper", "Identity", "Enemy - Gangsters from [insert gang here]", "Quirk - Paranoia", or even "Acceptance". And then you just build off of that.

Me, I'm going for stuff like, having a Quirk due to being from another time period, having a strong sense of Justice, and stuff like that, and then I go from there.
