Longshot for Best Pic, certainly, and a very tough uphill slog for Best Actor, but it had a good shot at the technical awards.
Can't complain about losing to Fury Road though.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Glad to see Fury Road took six technical Oscars, but it got robbed of the soundtrack gong by the Academy - let's get this straight, shall we? Morricone DIDN'T win for "The Hateful Eight" - he got it as a consolation prize for the Academy ignoring much more superior work in arguably better films for decades.
And Miller got robbed of Best Director. Simple as that.
I've already made my feelings clear about Charlize Theron being ignored for even a nomination in any of the acting characters so I'll move swiftly on from there.
Chris Rock's opening monologue for anyone who missed it:
It was pretty hilarious.

I was hoping The Martian would win Best Picture. :(
Princess Aurora is underrated, pass it on.He basically said what I was saying all along...he even brought up how idiotic it is to have a special category for actresses.
It was funny because you could tell how incredibly uncomfortable most of the audience was throughout the show.
Also his line about telling Obama how racist all these writers and producers are.

Honestly The Martian was the outlier on the best picture noms. I could easily see why all the others were nominated (even if I don't agree with the victor) EXCEPT The Martian, which don't get me wrong was a "good" movie but not ascendant or anything like that.
