Archie Comics 2015

To be specific, this is a general discussion thread for the ongoing rebooted Archie series written by Mark Waid, as well as its spinoffs, Jughead and the upcoming Betty and Veronica and Life with Kevin, all taking place in this new Archie-verse.

I've been hearing very good things regarding the main Archie series, but for some rhyme or reason, nobody really talks about them. And I hope this thread rectifies that.

So without more ado, discuss.

Ken Penders is apparently going to try and sue them again.

This is about the teenagers of Riverdale, not Sonic.

It would still effect the company as a whole, considering they're apparently not in the best of circumstances at the moment.

It'll probably (hopefully) go nowhere though.

I haven't been keeping up with Archie but Jughead #1 was great. I love Zdarsky.

Jughead was pretty good. Not sure I like the origin of his name. If it's as bad as it sounds I don't know why Archie calls him that.

Archie#5 was a bit unremarkable, Betty and Jug's plans predictably didn't go right and now Archie has no time for them. The melodrama is starting to tire me out now. Hope they get past all of this soon.

Unfortunately Waid seems all about the melodrama, and doesn't seem to get the characters either. especially reggie.

So, anyone liking Jughead's solo?

Then get ready for September because not only are we getting a new team composed of Ryan North (of Adventure Time and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl fame) and Derek Charm (of the Powerpuff Girls IDW comics fame), but we're also gonna see the debut of the new Archie-verse's take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch!

They've been moving steadily away from light comedy and towards melodrama for the last 10 years or so.

I don't necessarily disagree with you about Waid, Interestingly, this isn't the first time he's worked for Archie. He's written stories for them before, and was their cover gag editor early in his career.

Hello everyone, I'm trying to find a trope that would fit the seemingly unending string of bad things that happens to Betty Cooper in this series. I was thinking Chew Toy, Cosmic Plaything or Yank the Dog's Chain, but I still have doubts. Here is my reasoning :

- a nasty, nasty break-up with Archie in which the later joined hypocrisy with near-"My Girl Is Not A Slut" rhetoric.

- her relationship with Archie is further damaged in issue #5, although this time it's her fault.

- her beloved uncle leaves town and the way the whole thing goes down makes her relationship with Archie even worse

- she starts a relationship with another boy, she and Archie mend things somehow, but then her boyfriend dumps her for sticking too close to Archie

- now that she and Archie are better, they go back to their car project... only to have Archie steal it from under her with not so much as an explanation

- and the cherry on top, she ends up wounded in a terrible car crash, this time for trying to save Archie from his own stupidity

The lady can't catch a break is what I'm saying.

This review of ish 23 points out that Betty being paralyzed from a brain injury and her spinal cord being fine, while possible, is extremely unlikely and seems to set up that she'll eventually recover.

"She was brought in with a head injury and an inability to move or feel her legs. Despite all evidence to the contrary, the doctor says that she doesn’t have a spinal cord injury – her paralysis is the result of the brain injury. Which has resulted in zero cognitive impairment, to the point that she was lucid and talking minutes after waking up from near-death, but has resulted in total loss of feeling below her waist.

That’s, at the very most, an extremely rare medical outlier. Paralysis can result from brain injury, yes, but not combined with loss of feeling below the affected area. That’s a textbook symptom of spinal cord injury. From the dialogue afterwards, where the doctor doesn’t slam the door on Betty walking again, but makes it clear it’s a long shot, you can see why it was portrayed this way. It’s possible, if even likely, that this will be reversed at some point. Thus, they definitely wouldn’t want a situation like with Barbara Gordon, where there was no medical way for her to walk again and it necessitated a miracle cure. But not all spinal cord injuries are the same, and a bruised spinal cord that wasn’t severed or crushed would have likely had the same effect and been more scientifically accurate. (Your writer may be researching these topics for an upcoming novel.)"

I stop reading for a few months and Betty gets into an accident. Great.

Well, it's nice to see the reboot isn't dead at least. I worried they'd somehow backtrack and make it temporary.

They don't have to, they have a "classic Archie"-style book out at the moment called "My Pal Archie"

Meanwhile, Jughead continues to be totes hilarious, but with some genuinely heartwarming moments from ol' Juggy like having a heart-to-heart with Sabrina, who was a high school dropout and got her life fixed thanks to said heart-to-heart and Jughead ruining his Internet cred so Betty can have her life again.

Anyway, it's probably old news by now, but you guys think this is relevant to this page?

For the uninitiated:

• Cosmo the Merry Martian was a character from way back in the late 1950's, during the phenomenon that was the Space Race. It only ever lasted 6 issues, but the character himself stuck around making guest appearances in the other Archie books, from visiting Riverdale in Archie #655 (apparently before the reboot) to having his own version of Pokémon GO in one Archie story.
• Now, it's set to get a full-on reboot come next year, courtesy of Ian Flynn and Tracy Yardley (you might know some works of their's).

As an admirer of Ian Flynn's writing, I am of course looking forward to this, especially considering how great those redesigns look.

I know, but Archie isn't used to reboots like DC and Marvel. Their retools typically only last so long.

To be fair, so far only the main Archie series feel like a "real" reboot. For example, it's the only book so far in that relaunch to have let go of the "undecisive, horny teenage boy" characterization for Archie. As the last few issues seem to imply, his heart is kind of torn between Betty and Veronica, but still, he sticks to one girlfriend.

How is Archie Comics doing financially? They lost Sonic and a TV show like Riverdale has to be expensive...

I presume Riverdale helped any issues they're having considering how popular it is.

I just read issue #25, and I must say that unless we discover later on that Betty's mom is actually an obstacle that is much harder to overcome than her husband, the beginning of the misunderstanding between Archie, Veronica and Betty feels a bit contrived. They've built it up nicely, what with Archie's love for Betty apparently going the way of a romantic bond again and Veronica feeling lost in the shuffle, but the coincidence that starts it is a little bit much.

That said, Jughead was awesome (as usual) and treats us to another one of his schemes that makes him look a lot wiser than his years.

And the scene when Smithers learn of Veronica's current company was hilarious.

Okay, Cosmo is a fun story and I'm definitely enjoying it. The only problem is I can't read any of Max's dialogue without hearing Markiplier's voice in my head — he's got the right kind of vocal chops to pull off Max's combination of self-important, obtuse, and mildly paranoid.

Huh, interesting. I personally hear Travis Willingham's hammy Thor voice when I read Max's dialogue.

On the subject of dream casts for this comic, I've brainstormed the following:

• Roger Craig Smith or Josh Keaton as Cosmo
• Ashly Burch or Olivia Olson as Astra
• Eric Bauza as Orbi
• Lara Jill Miller as Medulla

Really though, I've only read issue 1, and I already want Frederator Studios to make a show out of this for Netflix...or Amazon.

Soo...Is anything going on in the comics lately?
