I am working on an adventure game that takes place in a universe where some planets are guided by deities called Titans, each tied to an animal. One one of these planets lives a man and his wife. She is a warrior of one of the titans, responsible for keeping the souls of the dead save through the underworld. They are trying to have a child but are told that the man is infertile. While his wife is away on her duties the guy sets in motion an illconcieved plan to get the attention of the deity in order to get some help. This in turn leads to other things and a great adventure concerning invading alien/demons. Anyway!

My question is, is this a motivation you buy for a main character? To me it feels like it falls a little into the "babies makes everything better" trope and I am also a bit unsure about the main character not discussing more or less breaking into a deities home with his girlfriend before doing it.

Sound cool for a story of the pseudo fairy tale genre. Considering the setup...can work. That man really want be a parent.

It's completely believable. Lots of men want to be fathers- it can easily be the driving passion of a man's adult life. Though he really should not have initiated some plan without the active participation of his life-partner...

There are a ton of reasons. Some people are just naturally paternal/maternal, some couples believe that a child is simply the most natural and purest expression of their love and commitment. In strict biological terms its the succession of their genes or, as is the case in verious cultures and societies, the way for a family name and wealth to live on.

I think that's interesting, believable, and he can learn during the course of the story that a baby doesn't actually make everything better.

Considering what Henry VIII went through due to his obsession with getting a male heir, the premise is believeable.

If properly executed and the character has internal justifications for not bringing his partner in on the plan, it would work. They don't need to be rational justifications - fear, imagined problems etc would work.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. This is how I have decided to solve it for now:

Game opens with the main character reading to a lot of children, who he is in reality babysitting for. Solving the first puzzle also gives the player the opportunity to look at family photos and see that all his brothers and sisters has kids but not him and his wife. The new storyline makes him into a minor mage and servant of the titan but the reason he breaks into the titans home is that he has lost the scroll for a teleportation spell that he is supposed to prepare and tries to take a new one without noticing. He then gets involved in the whole invasion-main-quest style stuff. It is not until the end that both he and his girfriend try to find a cure for their infertility.

I have posted this question on several sites, so my new storyline is a sort of mix-match of a lot of different suggestions, but i think it works!
