One scene at a time, exploring their experiences of each other and their predicament. You have to keep asking "why" and "to what effect" questions. For example, why does the older brother hold the younger brother responsible for their mother's death?
You have to make their dialogue organic rather than "plot-driven". This is to establish character. If I'm annoyed with my brother, I'm not saying too many nice things to him (when I'm talking to him at all). If I'm mad, however, I have a whole lot to say (and none of it nice).

Okay, so I am working on how these two brother characters should interact for a story of mine. quick background the older brother is 15 and the little brother is around ten.
the setup is that their village comes under a sickness and the only help is miles away
as the story goes the older brother is running away from home on a desperate journey to save their family, with little bro in tow. The older brother harbors disdain for his sibling because their mother died giving birth to him. But, for some reason, he still looks after him, protecting him even.
the younger brother is traveling with him because he wants to discover the world beyond their small settlement. also because he knows how dire their situation is and wants to help.
now I am stuck as to how to give these two chemistry with their dialogue and actions. naturally they will come to blows over their mothers death, and a big part of the story is them becoming closer as a team. but how can I write their interactions, especially early on Believably?
