Well, I know at least as far as microphones are concerned, most people recommend the Blue Yeti. It's decently affordable and has great sound quality.

I actually plan on starting a podcast too, so I should keep my eye on this thread.

Audacity is a free sound recording/editing software that should be good enough for most uses.

Try your best to minimize other sounds in the room you're recording in. Turn off anything that hums that you don't need to have on. If possible, choose a room with carpet rather than hardwood floors, and if you still get echo, hang blankets on the walls.

If you're talking to other people, make sure your headphones are turned down just low enough that your microphone doesn't pick them up.
