I forget. What was Tifa's reasoning for hiding the inconsistencies in Cloud's stories? In the original, I mean.

I think it was just mostly her repressing them. A vortex of repressed memories.

Edit: had to look it up. It's to protect Cloud and because she doubts her own recollection of the event.

To be fair, her father was murdered during this chain of events. She can be forgiven for it being a long, red blur in her memory.

Yeah, both Tifa and Aerith hold off on telling Cloud something's off because his mind is held together with tape. Really flimsy tape, too.

But she's also confused because she doesn't think Cloud ever came back to Nibelheim at all. She knows he wasn't the SOLDIER who accompanied Sephiroth but she was clueless about the fact he was one of the masked grunts. As such, he possesses memories of Nibelheim that are very close to exactly what happened yet just a little off. So she's afraid she's the crazy one because Cloud knows 99% of what happened and she doesn't know why.

Minor tangent: there's a weird opinion I've seen in the FFVII fandom over the years that Tifa and Aerith are "enablers" because they know something is wrong with Cloud but they do nothing. The view is they both only care about him as some sort of object and they are afraid they'll lose their precious boytoy if they spill the beans. It's a very twisted reading of events, misrepresenting simple tact and fear about hurting someone they love and it just bugs the hell out of me.

Especially since Barret and everyone else knew Cloud was screwed up too and they also are like "whatev" and jus roll with it. They aren't accused of using Cloud.

So Tifa didn't say anything about the inconsistencies in Cloud's story because they weren't inconsistencies so much as holes so big that she started to doubt her own memory of the events?

[up][up][up] He knows things he shouldn't know unless he was there and she's certain he wasn't there. Also he says he was a person at the incident she knows he wasn't. It sounds confusing to us, so imagine how she feels.

[up] Exactly. As soon as Sephiroth makes Cloud question himself, he falls apart. Hence why Tifa and Aerith handle him very gingerly. Unlike the evil bastard with a grudge against Cloud, the ladies don't want the man they love to have a mental breakdown.

Alright, back to the abridged version :

- does it feel to anyone else like Tifa's "We didn't fuck" is meant to sound either like a flat affirmation or a question, a completion of Cloud's "Isn't it weird that —"?

- related, is the implication there that they did have sex and it was so awfully awkward that Tifa's silence will be explained by her refusing to have Cloud remembering the whole thing?

- is there a reference to understand in Barret saying that Quake "sucks and they're full of assholes"?

The implication I got was that she and Cloud had sex the night that he returned to Nibelheim with Zack and Sephiroth, and she's so embarrassed and/or ashamed about it that she's totally willing to run with Cloud's version of the story instead.

I could easily see it going something like this.

  • Faerie: (dying) Promise me something.....
  • Neil: Anything.
  • Faerie: Never ever have sex again ever.
  • Neil: ...
  • Faerie: Seriously, don't even jerk it. It's just for peeing now.
  • Neil: Are you going to be looking down on me from some heavenly place?
  • Faerie: What? No, we become one with the earth.
  • Neil: Then yes, I promise.

Ah, that felt more funny than the last couple episodes. Also, Rufus is still the best. :D

Kinda wish they'd made a joke about the way Red walked in his disguise, though. I remember playing through that part of the game and just marveling at how bizarre he looked. Made a couple rather macabre jokes about it too, but y'all probably don't want to hear those.

but HOW?

I'm not really a fan of their characterization of Aeris, honestly. "Ditzy airheaded hippie" and "evil jealous bitch" are the two go-to characterizations of her in the portions of the fandom that hate her primarily for presenting an obstacle to Cloud x Tifa. It comes off as a vindictive Shallow Parody. They could have spun it into a joke about the fandom (maybe have her go from sweet and genuine to jealous and vindictive Jekyll & Hyde style or something), but they just... don't.

They have said that you either ship Cloud and Tifa, or you are wrong. While this was said in a joking manner, they probably do prefer Cloud x Tifa over Cloud x Aerith.

It's not like Tifa comes across any better than Aerith. There are two romantic interests for Cloud in Final Fantasy VII and TFS has depicted them both as different flavors of asshole.

Frankly, the whole Aerith v. Tifa shipping war is pointless anyway, and I say that as a profound shipper. One of them is dead at the end of Disc One; there is no competition to be had here. Regardless of what Cloud may or may not have felt towards Aerith, she f*cking dies. Either Tifa wins because Cloud likes her more or she wins by default because she's not a corpse. Either way, there is no reasonable argument to be had about this.

Well, their portrayal of Tifa isn't my favorite either. In the actual game, despite being a bartender in a rough neighborhood, a member of a terrorist organization, and capable of beating monsters to death with her fist, she's almost meek. There's a deliberate contrast where Aeris is forceful and proactive about going after what she wants, while Tifa is shy and only approaches things at an angle instead of being direct about it. TFS makes her violent and crude, which still doesn't fit her canon characterization at all, but works better as parody because that's how you'd expect her to act given her circumstances.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

I'll note that she's still meek and shy. She just masks it with violence and crudeness. She clearly has feelings for Cloud but uses her quick temper and crude jokes to hide it. This is most noticeable in episode ten, where she opts to wait behind for Cloud and then, in the middle of an emotionally sincere moment, panics and tries to turn it into a sex joke with increasing desperation.

"Hey, you, uh, you notice what floor we're on?" "That's what she saaaaaaaaaid...."

After Aerith "accidentally" dropped that materia, I felt like giving Cloud the same advise that Mistare Fusion keeps giving to Yamcha when it comes to Bulma on Dragon Ball Dissection: Run. Run as far as you can, you poor dolt.

I gotta say, I like those few times when Tifa is completely shaken and would like nothing more than leaving whatever place they're in as fast as possible. It happened in Hojo's laboratory and it happened again in this episode after Sephiroth popped up.

Also, I'm finding her reaction to Cloud's snapping in episode 12 more sympathetic by the day. Be it when he found her near the reactor after Sephiroth's rampage or when Sephiroth appeared again in episode 14, Cloud seems to mainly be concerned with either fanboying or trying to make himself to be Sephiroth's equal in combat. Compare that to Tifa's switch from despair to blinding rage or her anger followed by a small-scale freak-out.

Completely missed the stream so I barely got to where Ben is streaming Skyrim on the Switch and showing off his band of murder buddies that reminded the chat of SAO Abridged.

Damn man, TFS played the Corel Incident completely straight and then some.

They really could have done more with Hojo. This is the most evil man on the planet, essentially responsible for everything bad in the game, and he's just...chilling out on the beach. Like, why didn't somebody suggest stabbing this asshole over and over again?

Well that got serious right-quick.I'm rather curious about why Cloud was so dismissive after Barret shared all of that.

I really hope they have some sort of plan for Yuffie because I can't remember her backstory well enough to laugh at how she's being portrayed here.
