Different nationalities are represented by an Art Shift. So like someone's Ukranian granny is done in Socialist Realism and the Japanese exchange student is Animesque

Now everyone pat me on the back and tell me how clever I am!So like Drawn Together but for different nations instead of different companies?

Yes. I was actually thinking of doing something similar but got as far as "art style=nationality" before I scrapped the idea. Another thing; the inventory is accessed simply by reaching behind your back.

Now everyone pat me on the back and tell me how clever I am!Maybe your item shop are all run by some big company, kind of like Looney Toones's ACME or Disney's AJAX.
Instead of finding cash on your enemies, you get a constant influx of money based off how many people buy your merchandise (represented by how many Audience Members are wearing a T shirt with your character on it).
Now everyone pat me on the back and tell me how clever I am!And let's not forget cartoony weapons. With each one representing a way violence is shown in medium. Animesque characters get speed lines and a lot of stock footage.
Cartoony west characters get animated antics and large unrealistic weapons such as mallets or tube bazookas.
Necro/Bump
So basically the world is composed of tropes from Western Animation, Hollywood, Theater, Motifs (Playing Cards, Tarot Cards, Chess, etc), and the like.
-Narrator/Announcer that lampshades things the characters do
-Jazzy Soundtrack that mickey mouses the characters actions, Character portraits are displayed like movie posters, and Special moves are called Blockbusters, Grand Performances, and Finishing Acts (think Skullgirls)
-Encoring means retry again
-The Audience is a sentient part of the world and can interact with the characters at times (think Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)
-Maestro/Understudy = Teacher/Student and Directors, Producers, Composer, and Conductor all fall under leadership roles (think The World Ends with You)
-Props are items
-Acts & Scenes are akin to worlds and levels
-Animation Tropes/Toon Physics & Toontown/Toons (Inhabitants)
