Just something I decided to do since there may be people who are wary of doing this.

I haven't done this a lot, but there may be a time when a fic I write may need to involve a historical domain character interacting with a fictional character in the story without messing it up that some of the readers may call you out.

Is this an easy or hard thing to do?

It mostly depends on how much artistic license you're willing to take.

I usually write them in passing as having some "effect" over an event in fics that I've written.

I have yet to write one with a HDC showing up physically.

Forget the fact that it's fanfiction, would be my advice. You're writing historical fiction that happens to share elements with another published work, so treat the historical character as you would normally.

After which point, I'd say you'd have a duty to research as much as you can about said character until you're sure how to write them, or at least how not to write them.

@Sabre

- Good advice. Thanks.

@Eva

- I guess one way is that I have ideas on writing a Blacklist story (with some elements of other shows) set in the Yugoslav Wars. In said story, Reddington has met Ranko Zamani, who is said to be a Bosnian Serb and have been friends in the region. I could perhaps write an encounter that Reddington has with prominent Bosnian Serbs like Mladic and Karadzic.

Well, the good news about that point in time is that it's relatively recent, so it shouldn't be too hard to find information. However, that's also a bit of a drawback, since it's recent enough to affect the present day. I'd imagine it'd be a touchy subject for people who live in the area, so I'd recommend doing plenty of research so that you know what you're talking about.

Indeed. Always plan to do that.

And LOL on the Dynasty Warriors. I'm surprised the Chinese didn't find it offensive...

Nah. In terms of cultural impact, the Three Kingdoms are to China what the Arthurian Cycle is to Britain, or what the Iliad is to Western Civilization as a whole. It'd make about as much sense for them to get mad over a best-selling series as it would be for, say, England to get angry over Fate Stay Night's depiction of King Arthur as Saber.

I wonder if any British viewers didn't like King Arthur to be depicted as a woman?

Peter Chimaera did it in his actual book, since he could hardly borrow the rights to the properties he liked to use.

I'm all for writing fics with historical domain characters, and I've actually been considering a few of them myself.
