Hey there,

I am looking for good Selfinsertion fanfictions, like the topic suggests. I've read a few good ones like Mass Vexations, Spellbinding Radiance and There and Back (by Aquea, a Dragon Age Fanfiction over on Storiesonline.net) I've already looked a little for other Fanfics but mostly found only ones that are either not that long or just not my fandom. Currently I'm reading Don't Panic! by boz4PM and it starts really funny. And since I am simply overwhelmed by all the Fanfictions out there, I turn to you guys :D What other good Selfinsertions did you read or know of?

I'm in the very, very slow process of writing a parody/reconstruction of the genre, in which an Ohio fanboy is in Gendo Ikari's body.

There are presently only three short chapters, so it shouldn't take long to get through. While calling it "good" by any stretch of the imagination is probably unforgivable self-aggrandization, the reviews thus far have been positive.

...I am told by the internet that it's funny and has a Heartwarming/Awesome Moment. Make of that what you will.

The best self-insert I've ever read is Hybrid Theory. Truly one of the best fanfics overall that I've ever read, and one of two that I've ever re-read.

The other good self-insert is Undocumented Features. It's actually a whole bunch of self-inserts, but the quality increases the longer they've written.

There's a saying on the Space Battles forums: You can't talk about self-inserts without talking about Sleeping With The Girls.

Characters are all very well developed and grow over the course of the story, the self-insert and his trauma are well-written and the awesome moments he gets all feel earned, everyone else is pretty in-character...highly recommended overall.

Of course, it's actually not a great story examined critically, but from the guy who wrote Test Dummies that's not surprising.

With This Ring is a pretty good take on the concept, and crucially it doesn't get hung up on the fact it's a self-insert story; the main character integrates, adapts, and keeps moving forward.

First of all thanks to you all for replying :)

@Eva Uni 01: I quickly read through it, you are right it's not that long ;) I have to say though, I never was that much of an fan of Evangelion :D. So I can't give you any good feedback, other than that i found the fic funny to read :)

Hybrid Theory and Sleeping with the Girls seem highly interesting indeed. I think I will have a go at them after I'm done with Don't Panic!. Which I can only recommend, by the way. truly interesting fanfic of a normal day girl dropped into LOTR which for a change tries to be realistic :D

And With this ring seriously interests me, since I am a DC fan already, thanks for bringing that up :)

If there are more Fanfics mentioned in this post It is likely I will edit my first post and put a List of them in there. Might as well open A community over on Fanfictions.net or somesuch as well, while I'm at it.

You know I've always wanted to see more self-insert fics that explores the SI actually dealing with being thrown into another world, dealing with the potential threats, home sickness, possibly having to learn a new language (unless being thrown across dimensions takes care of that El-Hazard did IIRC), the exposure to a different culture and values. Having ones delusions about certain characters ripped away.

Considering some Naru Stus might as well be SI's why not throw them into Naruto's body (or any other character from any series you can think of) and have them deal with the plot.

Think of it as a "Let's see if you could do better" challenge. Truthfully, Reality Ensues should be expected if the author is smart about this.

I've seen a small handful of good self-insert fics, and New Reality is by far the best. If you're familiar with Tales of Symphonia, I'd highly recommend reading it. Updates are infrequent, but they do happen.

[up][up]Seconding what you said in your first paragraph. Another thing that would be interesting to see is someone avoid getting involved with the main plot.

[up]That author's also written self inserts for Doctor Who, Final Fantasy VII, Pokémon Gold and Silver, Silent Hill, and Tales of Xillia. The Pokémon one is excellent, but it hasn't been updated for two years.

Can someone please tell me how to edit my title and location?

I had heard of Sleeping With The Girls before now, but I only went to read it because of this thread.

... it's never going to be finished, is it? sad

[up] Look at the most recent SB thread. The writer put it on hiatus to finish college and has since resumed. Whether he'll manage to upload another chapter, let alone finish, is another matter.

Bit of self promotion here, but if Legend of Zelda is your thing, I think you'd like this: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9223839/1/The-End-of-All-Things-Twilight-Princess

Currently stands at 29 chapters, so it's a bit of a read and a little bumpy until the SI gets to Hyrule, but so far has received very positive reviews, especially regarding how he interacts with the world and Midna in particular.

Don't be alarmed, there's no romance yet. Yeah, it's planned, but not for a while. Right now it's mostly Snark-to-Snark Combat along with them actually trying to get through the adventure.

... Of course, if Zelda ain't your thing, then feel free to move along. smile

Oh, yeah, I forgot - I also really enjoy Kamen Rider Kuuga: Rising unto the Stars.

Probably the fic's biggest sell, to me at least, is that the author's In-Universe self is just so very much an Ascended Fanboy of Kamen Rider Kuuga (whose powers he now has) and of Pretty Cure (the world he's been sent to).

There's also the constant running gag that whenever the author starts talking to a woman about relationships, he always ends up putting his foot in his mouth and humiliating himself (he's an Open-Closet Chivalrous Pervert and just a little bit of a Harem Seeker).

Basically, while the protagonist does have some typical SI main-character ness and relationship-centrism, the author's more than happy to take occasional potshots at himself and also shows his in-character self actually training up his skills in order to be a more effective superhero.

Legend of Zelda actually is very much my thing, thank you I will definitely read it....sometime...after finishing the 600k word beast that Now, Panic! is :D and hybrid theory and and and. Thanks a ton for all the great recommendations. That Kamen Rider fic sounds interesting aswell. I really like it when the Maincharacter doesn't take himself all too seriously. At a few points I started my own fics, but never got more than a few chapters into it and am once again reworking everything :D, and as much as I try I can't seem to keep the hilarious humour out, that my friends tell me is typicall for the kind of stories I write.... yeah, that got a little off topic :D
