Suggestion: Creator.Gary Gygax

For creator pages, instead of a caricature of the real person in question, there should be an actual photo of the person out of respect for them. As such, here's a possible replacement image◊.

While I disagree with the sentiment behind the suggestion, I'm gonna go ahead and open this one. If this is the same suggestion as in the previous thread, I'm ambivalent to the change.

I disagree, especially if the caricature illustrates their "role" better than a straight portrait.

In this case specifically, though, I prefer the suggestion.

Of all the creator pages I've seen, I've struggled to find one of a comic/animation of them rather than the real person.

Even Harry Partridge shows himself...while holding one of his cartoons, but still.

Hiromu Arakawa shows her as that cow thing she draws herself as, but she is notoriously camera shy. I agree with your suggestion though, as I think showing him in a work talking to another character draws focus away from talking about him as a creator, especially a work with such a simplistic style.

Arakawa I'd say is an exception, since that's an Author Avatar, and like you said, she's camera shy. It would be similar if instead of her own Author Avatar, it was someone else's drawing of her.

Yeah, I think Creator subpages should limit themselves to actual pictures or self-portraits (portraits by other artists being acceptable for creators predating photography). Suggestion is good

I cannot disagree more with the sentiment that a caricature is worse, but the suggestion captures the man way, way, way better than the current image.

Also, Roy does not in fact speak for us all. Unless there's something my parents aren't telling me, I'm pretty sure I'd exist even without Gary Gygax.

But how would you know reality as you know wasn't created by Gygax?

Personally I'd prefer something that's... less of a wall of text. There were many caricatures made when Gygax passed away, and honestly, this one's sort of shit. It's just a giant dialogue bubble with a stick figure that's only recognizable as Gygax because it's the page title.

I'd prefer something like his Futurama self rolling his dice◊.

I find that a little too sentimental for a wiki article. Not sure which I prefer, though.

I mean whatever is the best image is the best image. It's not a good idea to have a rule (even if it's just a "should") about it. It's not inherently more respectful to use a photo instead of a drawing, and we're not at all beholden to that anyway.
