I was thinking of doing Prof X, but if anyone else is dead keen on him I can rethink my character.

Hmm... Can a character's powerset only be used once (I don't mean alternates, I mean the exact same character)? In addition, could we use character powersets from comic book adaptions like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or DCAU?

Further question, can we pick a specific point along a character's timeline to get a copy of their powers, or does it have to be their latest version?

[up] Yes, two characters can use the same powerset... extremely common powers such as super speed- and all other super nouns- can be excused as 'he got it from this speedster, not that one'. Unless it's something extremely specific and quite unique to a certain character... let's call it a case by case basis, alright?

And you can pick from adaptations such as the MCU or the DCAU- those are usually so close to the comics that it's practically the same characters. Unlike the Dresden Files idea previously mentioned, they come from comics, so I consider them 'comic powersets'.

As for the timeline question, of course you can pick your character's powers from a certain point in the hero/villain's timeline.

In the case of characters who only temporarily had a power or so on, would we eventually lose said power or would we get to permanently keep it? Thus could we use Ultimate Cyclops' powerset under a mutant enhancer? In addition, what about retcons and such? How would that affect the powersets we get?

Oh, and what about characters who have the power or skill to grant other people powers?

  • Name: Terry Bramford
  • Gender: male
  • Age: 16
  • Appearance: Terry is around 6 foot 4 inches tall, very well defined in terms of musculature, and has golden blond hair cut not quite short but not very long either and "baby" blue eyes. He seems to have a friendly posture, and an innate factor to his appearance that makes him seem innocent. He wears a blue blazer jacket, a white t-shirt with a few gold lines on it, jeans, and sneaker shoes. While handsome, he's such in a rather androgynous, pretty boy fashion.
  • Personality: Terry is essentially the good boy next door - wholesome, kind, courageous, and adventurous. He is very accepting of his friends, and always tries to be "heroic", including helping others who cannot help themselves. Even while fighting off bullies, he never goes outside of Apologetic Attacker. He doesn't seem very bright, though perhaps this is slightly exaggerated for certain purposes. He does, however, have a rather odd aversion to discussing his past, and has a phobia of the dark and enclosed spaces. He doesn't like talking about it - "people would think I'm a wacko" - but apparently he saw a "shadow man" when he was very small, and the thing supposedly acted aggressively toward him. There's also rumours he has had some struggles with mental health, mostly related to nightmares and stress. He is at present very averse to excessive violence, and if combat happens, he's a Martial Pacifist.
  • Powers:
    • Terry at first only shows the ability to create light, which can be oddly soothing in nature, and if worst comes to worst, he can brighten it up enough to cause temporary blindness in onlookers.
    • As things go along, however, Terry begins to show advanced powers;
    • Super-Strength
    • Super-Speed
    • Super-Toughness
    • Flight
    • As well as the ability to create Hard Light constructs and some limited psionic abilities (Terry voices extremely little interest in developing this particular ability). His powers come from The Sentry, though no worries, he's not pulling any more powers outta his rear - its a "more limited iteration."
    • Given who his powers come from, he also has a voice in his head - namely, The Void. And it is rather pleased it gets another chance to kill everyone. If he ever has a total mental breakdown, The Void will start to emerge.
  • Backstory: Terry's past is not something he likes discussing. The truth, that he shares with very few people, is that he was adopted by the Bramfords at age 13, and before that he was a troubled orphan who got himself into drugs and apparently made friends with "some people on the wrong side of the tracks". After his adoption, however, he tried to straighten himself out so as not to make himself seem "ingrateful" to his new parents. He doesn't even know what happened to his birth parents, just that "I was not wanted, one way or another." Though it is not in his character to carry a grudge - he doesn't hold it against them. He views his emerging powers as "a gift, something I need to use responsibly."

Do webcomics count, or does it strictly have to be paperback and strips?

To Kkutwar: I am not sure why would you pick temporary powers, but sure? Also, retcons... I don't see how they would fit in this situation. There are very few characters whose entire powersets have been changed due to retcons! I believe you are focusing too much on the particular details of a certain situation, Kkutwar, when I said that it is a case by case basis.

Also, please, only superhero comics. Not that I do not like webcomics or graphic novels, is just that the game is about superpowers, and I'd prefer to stay to superhero comics.

To Nick the Swing: I do like what you have here, however, I will ask you to expand on each of the Sentry's powers that will Terry be gaining. I would very much prefer to have them all in a list instead of just shoving them under an all-encompassing 'Flying Brick' denomination.

I have had this OC idea on my head for sometimetongue.

A tall, yet slender girl. Luna likes to dress like a goth girl, almost exclusively with black and, dark makeup ( dark lips) and milk white skin. She has two piercings on her eyebrows, and one on her tongue. Luna is a tall and pretty girl, very long black hair and very skinny but athletic body. In her supowerpowered persona, her hair grows even longer, and while she retains her slender figure, her muscles get noticeable bigger, she looks more athletic and she grows slighly on size.

  • Personality:

My intent is for her to be a very dark character. While she tries to have an image of being a selfish jerk, this is just a façade to avoid being hurt and betrayed as she is actually nice on the inside. She is a somewhat pessimistic and cynical and as big flaw she is easily influenced and of course she is a big rebel. Even is she tried to hide it, deep inside she is still a little girl that wants to believe in fairy tales and superheroes. If a bit immoral sometimes ( she plays by her own rules and is not above lying or stealing for instance but will hardly do evil without a good reason). Also a bit of an introvert, shy and sometimes hard with trust. Contrary to what might seem while she does express sorrow time to time she is not wangsty. After seeing the worst the world has to offer. She is introverted, and reserved, but extremely loyal to those few she considers her friends, but she is lonely and friendless. The whole point of her would be to show how an actual troubled rebel (not a hero or a villain just a person) teenager would deal with having superpowers while she tries to discover herself.

  • Powers: She has the same powers as Black Adam. When She says the magic word "Shazam", she is transformed into "The Black Witch," a slightly taller and more powerful version of version of herself, and granted the following powers derived from ancient Egyptian gods:

    • Stamina of Shu: Using Shu's virtually unlimited stamina, Luna can withstand and survive most types of extreme physical assaults. Additionally, she does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe and can survive unaided in space. She doesn't age either.

    • Swiftness of Heru: This power gives her superspeed, tough not as fast as speedster, she is at least faster than a bullet.

    • The strength of Amon: Basically she would be as strong as superman.

    • The wisdom of Zehuti: She has access to vasts level of scholarly knowledge, and this makes her able to know multiple languages.

    • The power of Aton: This giver her the power fly, fuels the magic lightning bolt that transforms her, and provides magical resistance against a massive amount of magic spells and attacks. Like the new 52 Black Adam, She can also shoot lightning from her hands as an offensive skill.

The courage of Mehen This one is mainly psychological and spiritual. This gives her inner strength, willpower, discipline and fighting skills.

  • Backstory:

With the death of her mother, and the abuses of her Stepfather.Luna is a runaway that practically has practically being living on the streets for some time, only occasionally going to a public high school so she doesn't have trouble with social services. She is considered by teachers and some people as a "trouble child" and a "rebel teenager" and of course it's no wonder she has horrible grades despite being smart as she just doesn't care. She has been living on the streets eve since, living on her street smarts, stealing , being part of teen gangs, her talents and the generous good people on the city. This poor girl hasn't had a place to call home, nor family or friends to trust. A a little fact she trying to leave her addition behind, but is still an frequent smoker. She will see her new powers as a chance to be free.

Showing interest. Is there a common location that would tie the characters together? Say, they all go to the same school, or hang out in the same shopping mall, etc. Or would they never have encountered each other prior to getting powers?

Just writing up my character - I've got her fleshed out, I'm just articulating it so it may take a while to finish (I have a lot of classes and an exam today, bare with me).

I'll post what I have here for now:

  • Name: Zia Brayne

  • Gender: Female

  • Age: 18

  • Appearance:

  • Zia Brayne is reasonably tall, standing at about 5 feet 10 inches with a wiry but lithe frame and long dextrous fingers. She is a little flat chested but has a good bone structure and would be considered good looking if it weren't for her skin nasty acne scars and ruddy skin. The top of her left ear has two silver stud ear-piercings but no others or tattoos currently. She keeps her hair cropped short at the back and sides with somewhat longer hair on the top as well as a stylish swept fringe away from her pierced ear, dyed bright purple with an overall 'punk' look. Zia's eyes are a lively hazel and her skin is a little pale.

  • Zia usually wears jeans with sneakers and a t-shirt, often with a band emblazoned on it. Tends to wear old style braces or a flannel shirt over these, often green or purple. Hates most jewelry and almost never wears make-up.

    • Personality: Zia Brayne has gone through a higher quota of crap in the early years of her short life than a teenager is entitled too, though not as bad as some. In the past she suffered from depression and morbid thoughts from her father's death and bullying at school but now that she's nearly left her teenage years behind Zia has become a fairly calm and, on the surface, happy-go-lucky gal. She still caries a bit of baggage and her issues with depression has made a bit of a come back with most all of her friends moving away (to college or work) and helping her mother at home, placing her own life on hold until next year rolls around. However, she is determined not to end up like her father or to burden anyone else with her feelings, maintaining a quirky facade for her friends. She is also a perfectionist, and rather clever, with low self esteem from her own high standards as well as a need to help/impress/please others.

While, when she was younger, Zia harbored a fair bit of angst these days she is very laid back and kinda funny, albeit mostly in a sardonic fashion and the occasional pun. She is in love with music of most all forms, her main obsession being with piano but she loves dabbling in new and interesting instruments. When not working or helping her mother she is practicing on one instrument or another, listening to music and/or exercising. The sudden onset of her telepathy has encouraged mixed feelings from Zia, as she's been able to move past her anxieties by ignoring what other people think of her. Moreover, she is a big fan of free will and thought thus being able manipulate people's brains doesn't seem right to her. She has always been perceptive and doesn't take kindly to others picking on her friends.

  • Powers: Zia gained her powers from Charles Xavier, AKA 'Professor X', and as such has vast, powerful psonic abilities. Her telepathy allows her to read minds and project her own thoughts into the minds of others within a radius of approximately 250 miles. Zia can also psionically manipulate the minds of others, for example to make herself seem invisible, and project illusions into them. She can also induce temporary mental and/or physical paralysis, loss of particular memories or even total amnesia. Within close range, Zia can manipulate almost any number of minds for such simple feats. However, she can only take full possession of another being's mind one at a time, and she can only do so if she is within that being's physical presence.

  • Other skills: Talented and skilled musician, particularly with piano - also competent with bass and guitar. Decent sketch artist, prefers working with pens and greylead pencils. Rather good at advanced mathematics. Fit from swimming and ride her bike almost everywhere.

  • Occupation: Music tutor at her high school.

  • Backstory:

  • Zia Brayne's parents immigrated from the UK to America before she was born, her mother a high school teacher and her father a musician. Her dad had always struggled with mental illness, particularly depression and the stresses of raising a young child did not do much to relieve this. Zia was empathetic and perceptive even as a young girl, and did her best to keep her father happy but it never seemed to be enough - He took a gun and blew his brains out when she was 8, her mother called it an accident. By then he had already passed on his love and talent for music as well as, it seemed, his depression albeit for more obvious reasons. Even before she found out the truth of his death Zia began to suffer morbid, persistent thoughts of unchild-like nature. It didn't help that her bad skin and odd interests singled her out as a target for bullying but she was at least able to see a psychologist for a time and learned to focus on her studies.

  • As she entered high school Zia learned to stop caring about what the majority thought of her, at least outwardly. As a consequence she made a number of good friends amongst the other weirdos and musos. She even learned bass and a little guitar for a few garage bands. Last year her mother was diagnosed with cancer and thus her daughter had to withdraw from much of her social pursuits to care for her as she underwent chemotherapy which continued into the next year. Zia's friends were mostly older than her so most of them have largely moved away for their own futures. Her mother has recovered and given her virtuosic talents Zia has taken a job as an after hours music tutor at the school.

I am going for a slightly more powerful character here but his approach to using them is certainly different to the original source. Also note that while his physiology is enhanced, it is nowhere near that of supers such as Superman.

  • Name: Blake Sullivan
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Blake is reasonably tall, at around 6 feet and fairly skinny, with pale skin and bright ginger hair which he keeps fairly short. His eyes are a deep, watery blue but the right is non-functional and shows some signs of that if inspected closely. He normally wears large, thick-rimmed glasses with a black lens on the right side to hide his non-functional eye. Although they are rarely visible, there are also a few small scars scattered around his body from injuries throughout his early life. His clothing is fairly varied but within the normal realms of fashion, although he always wears an ammolite ring on his right hand.
  • Personality: Blake is obviously at unrest most of the time, never really seeming comfortable in any situation and becoming angry quite easily. However, past experiences have made him jaded regarding violence and as such he tends towards apathy and tries to remain pacifist, although his words are often harsh and cruel. He often contemplates immoral actions but tries to restrain himself, stopping himself from going too far.
  • Powers: Blake takes his powers from Loki, the Asgardian god of mischief. He gets some changes to his body due to Loki's unique physiology but the most significant power is his divine sorcery. Blake takes his power from the "Kid Loki" incarnation however, so his magic is less powerful.
    • Frost giant biology: Although he still looks human, the frost giant in Loki gives him some enhanced physiology; his strength, durability and stamina are boosted somewhat.
    • Asgardian biology: Similarly, Loki's Asgardian side gives him enhanced healing and slows his ageing almost a thousandfold.
    • Sorcery: The most significant of his powers. He can accumulate mystical energy and use it to enhance his physical capabilities, utilize innate abilities and cast spells.
      • Innate magic: He can temporarily enhance his physical abilities, such as strength, stamina or healing. He also has a few pieces of magic that are innate to his own being; he can communicate telepathically, teleport (although this requires some mental preparation and the speaking of a magic word so can't be done too quickly) himself and others and fire bolts of offensive energy.
      • Spells:' If he comes across adequate information he can cast spells using runes, mystic words and similar magical elements. However, he would need to discover information on magic in order to do this to much effect as the only spell he could naturally remember was a tracking spell.
      • Potential: As Blake is using the abilities of a powerful deity, he has unfulfilled potential. Among the abilities he could have if his power grows are the creation of illusions, telekinesis, shapeshifting and more powerful chaos magic.
  • Backstory: Blake was often referred to as a "problem child" growing up - he regularly stole and got into fights and both of his parents were somewhat neglectful, not really caring about their son's problems. As such his anger grew and he gained more enemies until one significant incident; some other students he had angered came after him and attacked him, beating him and causing chemical burns to his face. He eventually recovered from this, the only long-lasting physical effect being the permanent loss of sight in his right eye, but was changed mentally. He became less violent and more withdrawn, although the darker aspects of his personality remained present. Years passed since and he regained some composure and became more self-aware of his faults but it was only once he felt the new power flowing through him that he started to regain his confidence.

To KR_Vandal: yes, very much so!

To RPG Legend: welcome to the role play. I must ask you to do two things unrelated to the content of your sheet... first, fix the formatting, in that I do not believe it is necessary to have bullet points in your personality and backstory sections, especially considering that you constructed it similarly to a normal paragraph yet made the odd choice to separate it! And do not feel the need to link so savagely to Tropes... again, your writing is good enough that what you're implying with your words is easy to understand, and you linking to tropes is simply unnecessary, plus it is quite a random peeve of mine, what with the somewhat annoying blue shade that the words adopt when linked... You do have the odd grammatical error, such as saying 'he' instead of 'she'. It's not anything major, but the kind of stuff proofreading can point out. As for the content of your sheet, there is one problem: this RP will start right before the children gain their powers, so your backstory will have to change (This has nothing to do with anything, but "shazam" something is a really, really bad pun.)

To deadpool616: I know what I said about there being no limits, but I'm afraid a line must be drawn here, as Slapstick represents a very different kind of superhero. His powers, much like the logics of a classic cartoon, have no logic behind them, which make them extremely volatile and, as such, hard to portray in a RP setting where mechanics are as important as characterization. Do you have a replacement power set? Apart from that, your sheet is very, very weak. You are going to have to 'beef up' the personality and backstory sections to be more than just two lines for me to accept you...

To whizzerd: I preferred to hold this discussion until all players had a character in, but my objective is to have them all come from the same school or neighborhood, as this proximity will play into how they gain their powers.

To Nick the Swing: I see no problems here. Consider yourself accepted!

To Lt.B Gob: do inform me when your sheet is complete.

To Tenebrous Gaze: no problems with this sheet, excellent job. Consider yourself accepted!

Okay doke. I haven't filled in a character sheet in a while, so I'm hoping it's alright grin

  • Name: Ciro Meyer
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 18
  • Appearance: Short brown hair, darker brown eyes, and olive skin, all traits that he inherited from his mother's side of the family. He's average height, about 5'8", but his lax posture makes him appear smaller. His naturally attractive appearance is marred by his lack of self-care: baggy eyes, bitten nails, untamed wavy hair, and worn-out clothes from second-hand stores.
  • Personality: Ciro's a kind and amicable guy; almost to a fault, as he can worry too much about upsetting others. He's quite the skittish person, constantly fiddling with his hands and never seeming to stay in the one spot. He also tends to gesticulate when talking, a tic that was picked up from his father. His top priority of keeping his family alive and well can cause him to dabble in morally grey areas, even though he genuinely wants to be a good person. This grey streak of his is not something he's proud of, which causes him to try and over-achieve in other areas to compensate for it. As a result, he's known as a hard worker both at school and by his neighbours.
  • Powers: Ciro has the powers of Susan Storm from the Fantastic Four, granting him invisibility and control over force fields.
    • His invisibility involves bending visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light around himself (though allowing just enough light through to allow him to see). He can make other objects or people turn invisible, and can also make invisible things turn visible if he wishes. He can detect when invisible objects are present, but only if they've been turned invisible by himself or by physical means- like a machine, rather than due to psionic or magical abilities.
    • His force fields can take on any simple shape that he can mentally picture, are invisible to everyone including himself, and can range in size from 1cm to 100 feet. He can also expand or detract the size of a field at will. The more hollow the force field, the larger it can become. Ciro can manipulate the force fields to be either rigid as steel or resilient as sponge; damage to the force field will be transferred to Ciro himself, so changing his fields to be more resilient helps in lessening damage to his body. He can control multiple force fields at once, but doing so requires intense concentration.
    • The force fields can prevent telekinetic power from passing through, and anything inside one will become tangible and remain in that state.
    • Both of these powers require Ciro's concentration to upkeep. If he is sufficiently distracted, then neither of them will work.
  • Backstory: Raised by a single father in a poor household, Ciro's life has generally been about cutting corners to make ends meet. As the oldest he's often left in charge of his two siblings while his father works, and even takes on odd jobs around the neighbourhood in order to gain a little extra cash. He feels a disconnect from his family, being the only one to inherit his departed mother's looks rather than having blue eyes and pale skin, but despite that he does love them dearly.
Even with their situation as it is, his father has always taught him to "be your best and see the best of things" and that "no reward comes without hard work". Ciro has tried to follow by his words, and so looks to the positive even though his living conditions are less than ideal. However, the temptation of quick, dirty cash to help sustain them has always nagged at him. Once he gains his powers he'll be strongly torn between doing the right thing, or doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.

Quick question: Would having a character who's powers aren't as impressive be a big problem? I'm considering Toad's from X-Men. I feel like it could be fun to play with on a character level, but I'm not sure how well it'd work for action alongside characters like Superman and such.
