Silly silly band drama.

I have to laugh at Reina being a stereotypical trumpet player.

I'm enjoying this too much.

Something that came up somewhere else:

I was having another discussion on this subject elsewhere, and I pointed out that we Westerners, and Americans in particular, might not realize the full extent of what Reina is trying to do. American popular culture is full of young, talented people struggling against the established order, trying to step out and show everyone how special they are. We look at Reina, and we see ourselves. But things other people have pointed out tell me the Japanese audience doesn't see the story in quite the same way.

And:

Yeah that was one of the things that were a bit of a culture shock to me when I was living in Japan for a couple years. They are definitely a bit looser in the Kanto Region (Tokyo and Surrounding Areas) while the Kansai Region is bit more conservative. Regardless all of Japan acts as a collective mindset so individualism isn't something they practice regularly. Heck, PDA isn't considered the norm.

So Reina is definitely "dangerous" and "edgy", as far as the conservative setting of both the TV show AND the books is concerned, as she's taking what might be seen as a very Western stance here (hence why many English-speaking viewers don't really think twice about what she's doing, but apparently her behavior raised eyebrows among Japanese watchers), of "I" over the group. Never mind her rather, ahem, personal interactions with Kumiko (which continues on in the books, regardless of Shuichi now being in the picture).

Oh, and PV for episode 11.

Oh Kyo Ani, you tease...

[up][up]Odd, I'd have figured the Kansai region would be the looser one.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

Jesus Christ, KyoAni, that has to violate some international law.

I heard this was based on a light novel series? How many volumes are there, and how have they gotten (Nationals? Further?)

Also how many of the L Ns has the anime covered so far?

It's an actual straight up novel series. There are three novels and a collection of short stories. I don't think the series will finish off the first novel, but I'm not sure.

Here's an excerpt.

Something to think about while going into this episode:

I find it interesting that Kumiko used the word ai during her scene with Reina. According to a conversation I had with a member who is more knowledgeable about Japanese than I am, ai can refer to either romantic or platonic love (I imagine it can be context dependent). What separates it from the specifically romantic/erotic koi is that koi is about receiving, while ai is about giving. Koi is something one selfishly seeks from others, while ai is more about accepting someone for who they are and trying to make them happy.

How awful bowhead is. She pushes for new auditions because her sempai didn't get the part and then she doesn't have enough faith in sempai to try to get Reina to throw the audition. If Reina really wanted to get revenge just let loose that little bit of information. Bowhead and Kaori would lose a lot of face.

[up] Reina's not that kind of person though. Awful as she is, she will never stoop to underhanded means in order to crush the opposition.

Reina is not a nice person, but I could see an argument for Asuka as worse.

[down]She doesn't just come across as arrogant, she is arrogant. She's really haughty and vain.

[up][up]She does have a terrible personality. She's totally tactless and comes across as somewhat arrogant because of that. Of course, her hubris isn't unjustified, but it's not very good for her reputation and inter-personal relationships (not that she cares).

You know, I'm seeing so many people saying they're happy that the ribbon girl broke down crying. Meanwhile, I'm like this.

[up][up]I wouldn't say Asuka is worse. She seems to be someone that just wants to play her instrument and do well in nationals. She probably knew Reina was better but didn't want to lie to her friend, and I think Kaori would know it would be a lie.

[up]She's a socially awkward teenager, so I don't think it is that unrealistic.

Also, wow, I didn't realize "friends" did that sort of stuff. So, do you get inches from your friends faces and caress them? tongue

Asuka is like Reina in that both are weridos who distance themselves from others and are selfish, but Reina seeks out a kindred spirit in Kumiko, whereas it doesn't really seem to matter to Asuka whether she has friends or not and she certainly doesn't seem to have any close ones. Compare her with Kumiko and Reina's relationship, or the Potato Girls. Asuka just wants to play with the ensemble and have it play well in turn, although she's not willing to put much work into making sure it does that.

She also doesn't have too much regard for other people's feelings – witness her dealing with the Haruka's breakdown and Hazuki's relationship stuff. Kumiko notes that Asuka's got a "thick mask", meaning she hides behind her façade of theatricality and friendliness, and never really puts her heart on display.

Also, wow, I didn't realize "friends" did that sort of stuff. So, do you get inches from your friends faces and caress them?

I thought Kyo Ani was punching things up quite a bit from the novels, but that friggin excerpt is like… ok, kid.

The Kumiko/Reina banter this episode was pretty peak. "I'll actually kill you."

I bet Yuko feels horrible right now, and she should be. She was basically the one calling for re-auditions in the first place, and her precious sempei still didn't get to be the soloist. I don't have any ill feelings toward her now, though. She'll learn a good lesson once going through the stages of grief.

Reina: "Whew! Now I won't have to kill Kumiko!" :D

Asuka's worse news than Reina because Reina's honest. You get what you see with her, and you can adjust your expectations accordingly (and any surprises are likely to be positive ones - she's a good and loyal friend to anyone who catches her attention). Asuka, on the other hand, is a fair-weather friend who'll bathe in the spotlight as the heart of the team, and then either dump any genuine problems on her overworked, underappreciated president or just let the problem fester until said president has to grab the pooper-scooper herself. She's got the nasty combo of enough charisma to get into any position she wants (and a few she doesn't) plus none of the diligence and sense of responsibility necessary to be useful in those positions.

[up]

At least to us viewers, enough's been revealed for us to see why Asuka wouldn't throw her vote, but as other forums noticed, there's no excuse for the rest of the band to not choose for either Kaori or Reina. Smacks of guilt-avoidance, really.

Yeah, why the hell did everyone else abstain? Like, "Look, man, I ain't in this, don't look at me." if they weren't gonna get involved, why bother even showing up at all?

Hmm, I think there were a few scattered people who clapped for Kaori, but only Kumiko clapped for Reina because Reina is an asshole with no friends.
