I have a character concept in mind and am interested, but I'd like to know more about the setting itself.

  • What is the tech level? Does it vary amongst nations?
  • How diverse are the languages, and is there a lingua franca?
  • Who rules the nations, and how well-liked are they?
  • How are Magical Girls viewed by their populaces? Do they have special relationships with their governments?
  • World geography? Uncharted territory? Wildlife? Are there any nonhuman intelligent species?
  • Degrees of prosperity and standards of living? How common is international trade?

...

At 12119 words... the rules for making Magical Girls are now done...

They can be found on the first post of this thread. Thinking making character creation with a 100 points perhaps less if people can min max too easily. Feedback on costs of everything and how it all looks like would be appreciated.

Will reply questions when I become sane again. Tentative date for proper sign up thread with nations, lore and the like? Tomorrow or the day after that.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

Two quick bits of feedback:

  • Magic basically powers all of the things, yet it's pretty dang expensive to have more than 3 cores. The Overload kind of makes up for it, but the drawback for it is a harsh one. You ever consider having players start with maybe 2 cores (maybe balanced by having spells cost a little more; maybe balanced by having cores past two have harsher scaling; I dunno).
  • Starting stats. You've got no way to buy them up any further at character creation, so I have to assume there will be some way to level them in-game after achieving some goal or something. Seven starting points seems a good way to prevent people immediately buying to 5 in a stat with no downside (because at eight or more points they can just have 1 in all their other stats), but it feels a little restrictive. Maybe bring it up to 8, with a caveat that you can't buy up to 5 in a stat at character gen, or having it cost 2 stat points instead of 1 to buy rank 5?

The punch is mightier than the sword. Except for when it isn't.

Your first point really depends on how fast Cores recover, though, right? That's something else that would be good to know, since I don't see much about it in these rules.

Question answering Marathon!

Biome: A bit of everything, it is one extensive continent that may be attacked anywhere.

Witch Weapon Telepathy Talk: Uhh... sure? You can talk mentally with a Sentient weapon if you have telepathy and it can thus talk for you.

Bow/Sword: In the current setting you can buy a bow or a sword or both, but not one that transforms. For the final version I may add a Mastery that lets you have a weapon that shifts modes or transforms.

Goddess Resurrection: Complicated beyond measure. There is hope in the believers but those who know most about what happened and the magics involved believe nothing can be done about it. If the Goddess manages to come back it will be by a power unknown to any at the moment or from the shattered fragments of her own energy. Popular opinion on this varies by nations and individuals, some big fanatics saying it's talking ill of her sacrifice, some wistfully thinking it would be amazing and some dedicating their entire lives to an endeavor far bigger than themselves.

Setting info: Tech level varies by nations, with some having up to semi steampunk tech in some small cities to countries that are quite advanced due to Magitek. Some nations are quite primitive, little more than roving bands of nomads. Varies a lot. There is a Lingua-Franca spoken by nearly everyone similar to Latin spread by followers of the Great Goddess. There are many different rulers depending on the nation though Kings, Queens, Emperors and Empresses tend to be the order of the day, more or less well liked depending on their rule. Magical Girls are usually held in awe by the population though there are some who don't like them or fear them for their sheer might. Governments vary in their dealings with them... one of the Magically Inclined nations keep close tabs on the Magical Girls born within their borders and some of the unprotected ones beyond their borders, using magic to scoop them out when they are young and placing them on a program to properly train them, giving them tons of benefits... but also a curse mark that allows the Government to put a damper on their powers or in the worst case, kill them if they go out of line. In other places they are given religious significance and taken by the Church to be raised with great esteem. It depends a little. As for geography we have one big, extensive continent to cover. Civilization tends to concentrate itself on territories they can secure, though on the edges and in dark places all sort of monsters and legendary creatures dwell. There are many intelligent species and indeed, most current nations are made of more than one species. Elves, dwarves, celestials, dragonborn, faeries, harpies and many more live on this world and Magical Girls may come be produced from any of these. In case you have a Magical Girl of a species that would give you a special ability, I suggest buying it. For instance, a mermaid magical girl would definitely have a good swim speed.

On Cores: I originally had it that you start with two Cores worth, however then decided that there are enough ways to obtain more Cores to not be entirely necessary. Indeed, Cores are an essential resource for Magical Girls as they power most abilities, but they need to be hard to obtain cause having too many severely increases the output of power of a Magical Girl in this system. A point to consider and responding Darksidevoid's question... so long as a Core is not Overloaded or damaged by an enemy attack, it continues to produce magic constantly. Consider each of them as a never ending battery you can shift into different things. If you have two Cores and want to shoot a fire spell worth two Cores of energy, you can power it with the two cores and once the spell is cast those Cores are free for you to power anything else with them. If you are flying in this instance, you can unpower your flight, falling for a few seconds and use those Cores to shoot your spell and then before you fall power up your flight again. Overloading your Cores becomes then a nice mechanic of a cost for the sake of obtaining big finisher attacks and go Nova on your damage or utility for a moment by Overcasting a spell... however, you shouldn't just instantly recover from using the Aces up your sleeve, thus why the Cores become unusable after doing so. However, if you have too many Cores, then you can start Overcasting spells without any cost involved... and that is quite a powerful ability in and off itself. Someone who invests a lot in Cores gets more flexibility powering different abilities and Overcasting spells, however they may not have much flexibility in abilities and the like.

At the moment, at least in my head, I see big Nuking Builds built around sinking a lot of points in Spiritual Fortitude for the extra Cores and then some more in obtaining Energy upgrades with a couple main powerhouse elemental spells to sink that power into.

These would be countered by 'Knight Builds' whose power comes from their techniques, high mobility, weapons and the like who don't rely on many Cores who can get in close fast and then mess up the squishy Nukers before they can unleash hell. Their Physical Might Stats grant them resistance and damage that isn't tied into any Core use.

Too much mobility can, likewise, be countered by Binders, Purifiers and Abjurers, who can limit their movement, pin them down and let others attack the weakened Knights at will.

More well rounded builds don't have the power of optimized builds, but they can't be pinned down on a single weakness as well, making them excel in more circumstances. As well as that they tend to make more colorful, fun builds.

Uhh... I'm talking of this as if there was going to be big Pv P which may only happen if players really want and go find it... but it kind of also applies to the PvE that will be at the heart of the RP. The demonic entities you will fight will have powers and abilities that will be familiar to those who check the Abilities in game already. Still, the system is flexible and really, geared up so you can make your dream, colorful and fun Magical Girl so don't worry too much about optimization and crunch as most builds should be viable and useful.

As for the Stats, originally it was going to be 6 points for stats, indeed to prevent some min maxing going on... With 8 I worry not about a five and three ones, so much as a five and a three, obtaining three perks on character creation. Really, having a 0 in a stat is not that bad a deal... it just means you are regular and normal in that particular thing. With one point, you are peak human and perhaps a little bit more on that particular field.

This is the explanation for the current set up... however, if players in general feel like 1 starting Core is just too little and want 8 stat points for more build diversity, I can implement it. Do take into account that in game, you'll have ways to get more points for buying Abilities and Stats both.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

If cores are reusable that quickly, I think it's perfectly reasonable for us to start with just one. If we're going to have more ways to buy additional stat points anyway, then starting with seven rather than eight is fine as by me as well. Better not to start out on top of the world, after all.

If I bought two weaposn wouldI have to spend twice as many points to upgrade each one? know that would be more balanced but it would kinda be less fun imo.

Also waiting for the sign up sheet to start creating my character.

Assuming I understood what Dalts said earlier, that depends on if you bought them as a pair (like two pistols, a rapier and a dagger, two shortswords, etc), in which case they function as one weapon, of if you bought them individually, in which case you upgrade them separately.

It's kind of funny. Sufficiently advanced stupidity is like sufficiently advanced science; eventually, you find something you can't solve.
