Saw the dub of Shin Godzilla.
I liked what Anno was going for. It has it's flaws like pacing issues and a few underdeveloped characters but it was overall enjoyable. I especially loved the cinematography that made otherwise boring meetings at least interesting to look at.
As for the dub, it took me a while to realize the flat acting was intentional due to them playing government bureaucrats. There are moments of pathos that are well voiced, including when Kayoko Ann Patterson cries over the plan to nuke Tokyo to destroy Godzilla since her grandmother was a survivor of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, my favorite role was Hiromi Ogashira. I got to find out who the English voice actress was because I loved her sarcastic tone.
Edit: Found it. Kate Oxley, a name from Funimation I'm not familiar with but she has been called "underrated".
Oh, and I did think the effects were good although there were moments of Conspicuous CG like the trains that run into Godzilla.

Second part of the anime trilogy has been dated for May 2018 and is focused around Mechagodzilla. Raw translation of the title is "Decisive Battle Maneuver City"
I think I'm going to scream with glee now.
/crawls back under rockAlso in other recent news, The Criterion Collection has acquired the rights to almost the complete Showa Godzilla catalog, with only King Kong vs Godzilla and the ones licensed to Kraken being missing. They are currently available on streaming services, but no physical release plans have been revealed just yet.

I’m just imagining this Godzilla reunion where all the Zillas need to steer clear of the Netflix one while he gingerly walks to get the hot dogs.
I can't tell if they went too far or not far enough.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Like I said on the netflix movies page, it wouldn't surprise me if The OG Godzilla literally IS Planet Earth itself now, since he's based on plant life this time around.
Watch SymphogearI'm genuinely cackling at that chart. I'm both intrigued and terrified to wonder if they'll find a way to outdo themselves. Has science gone too far? Or not far enough?
/crawls back under rockThat Mothra film better have mysticism in it.
I'm still getting over the idea of an incarnation of Godzilla being a plant monster. Did they mix Godzilla up with Biollante or something?
I guess it's not that weird. We had an embodiment of a bunch of angry ghosts, an iguana, a made up dinosaur, whatever the heck Shin Godzilla was...

Disgusted, but not surprisedWhat Mothra film?
So at the end of Shin Godzilla, when we see the tail of the petrified Godzilla, there is some really freaky looking design of skeletons or something fused to it
What the hell was that?
Remember, Godzilla in that setting is explained as a being of constant evolution adapting to the circunstances. Humans were coming together as an army to bring him down, and before he was frozen, he was about to reply in kind
Holy shit
Sasuga Anno
Okay so I finally watched the Godzilla anime film on Netflix.
I didn't like it. Didn't exactly hate it but I didn't like it. The opening infodump was pretty good but it mostly amounted to fanservice by dumping in different kaiju like Dogara and Kamacuras. The actual plot felt kinda short, I didn't particularly care for the main characters any, and I felt like they underutilized Godzilla a good deal here. The animation for Godzilla was also not that good, felt too stiff. I assume they were going for something slow, mighty, and weighty, but it just felt a bit awkward. Plus to be honest I didn't like the design. I have no objections about Godzilla being plant based here (he's been weirder) but he looked way too much like a beefed up version of Groot.
What I found especially annoying was that the Godzilla we focus on for most of the film isn't even the main Godzilla, though I'll admit once the main Godzilla showed up, it was kickass. The Godzilla Junior expy here doesn't even do anything destructive other than fighting back after being shot at. I understand why (foreshadowing no doubt) but they could've hidden that this wasn't the original Godzilla by making him more destructive in the first place. Also, the one weird alien dude at the end, what the hell was with him talking about this all being God's will or whatever? Felt weird.
So personally, gonna rate it really low. Probably one of the weakest of the franchise. Kind of a shame, the premise felt interesting (if a tad derivative), but they didn't do much with it.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? Its the first act. There's 2 more movies for it
Watch SymphogearThat sounds like a horrible way to write movies. You can't have one movie be just the first act.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? The script was too big for 1 movie, so it was split into 3.
Watch SymphogearThat's...also not good. At all. That's not how you write a movie. They could've edited most of this down by thirty minutes or so and then wind up with a first act for the movie they wanted to tell instead of padding it into a trilogy where each movie is just a different act of the script.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Look at it more as a miniseries/OVA. That’s what I did.
It was a slow start but I hope it picks up.
Fine then, I'll wait until the other two installments are released before I judge it completely.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? So, casting news for Godzilla vs. Kong: Julian Dennison from Deadpool 2 has been cast in an undisclosed role in the film. This is alongside a cast that already includes Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things, Ziyi Zhang, and Van Marten.

Long time Godzilla actor Yoshio Tsuchiya just passed away. He was in several Toho and Godzilla movies, including Godzilla vs. Monster Zero as the alien leader and Godzilla vs King Ghidorah as Shindo. Man this year we've been losing a ton of people connected to the Godzilla franchise
