OK, since I'm still not sure if this is even something people want to see, or indeed what to do for it, I figured I'd make a public spitballing thread for it.

So the basic jist of it is I kind of want to run an RP set in the Ace Combat universe. However, outside of knowing I want to set it during one of the games set in the fictional "Strangereal" world (So anything before Assault Horizon, I guess) I'm not sure which one.

A couple of the things I do have nailed down:

Jesus. Never thought I'd see this...

Anyway, keeping an eye on the various fighters in existence. I initially had the idea to have some influence from Area 88 and Ace Combat: Infinity due to the AAAP system if I were to do this.

I think we need to have a vote on the setting in Strangereal, especially with story details.

I suppose the problem is that out of all the SR-set games I'm only really familiar with 5, Zero and to a lesser extent 6.

I can only do a quick gist of things since with the exception of Ace Combat 3, most take place between (in-universe) 1995 to 2020.

Yeah, Electrosphere is a massive can of worms. As in, do we use the American or Japanese version, and which path do we assume Nemo took if it's the Japanese?

I don't recall about any major changes between Western and Asian versions of the game, unless if I'm mistaken.

What role is Nemo going to have, being an AI unit?

The Japanese version of AC3 was a lot longer, with at least six potential branches, IIRC. The American version cut this right down and made it one linear path.

But yeah, we're not going near the 2040s, so...

If low-tier aircraft is required to start, I'll probably start with a Mitsubishi F-1 or a ST Aerospace A-4SU Super Skyhawk.

I think I'd prefer it if people stuck to aircraft from the games. So that'd be the F-1 then.

And thinking about it if we're going to mix-and-match it's probably easier to do a Mercenary squadron during the Belkan war than any of the standing Air Forces.

Ow. Okay...

I'll keep an eye on this if there's a definite setting and sign-up sheet.

Interest, and if you are wondering on plot ideas I wrote up a proposed game for the series. Feel free to pinch ideas that may appeal.

I'd been thinking of a skeleton of a storyline. Let's see if this is any good.

Aerulla who is allied with the likes of Osea, Gracemerica and the ISDF is sent to Tibo as peacekeepers and are horrified by the atrocities committed there. When journalists come in to report on the conflict they are murdered by Jadoli forces, an independent country seeking to gain access to next gen military hardware and are part of the conflict and when Aerulla find out Jadoli basically says, "Yes we murdered them, what are you going to do about it?" As the political situation escalates those responsible are killed by an air strike and Osean forces, one of them a foreign national, are arrested for calling in the strike, but are broken out by forces unknown.

Who are the people who rescued the Osean soldiers? Are they allied with any of the countries involved in the conflict and are they good or bad? How would Osea, Aerulla and Jadoli react to their actions and escape? Given that it involves big political players who want to try and keep the situation escalating to outright war it could make for a rather interesting storyline. There's Tibo of course and the conflict there, but what if negotiations break down and Aerulla withdraws support to Jadoli, or it even breaks out into war?

That ought to give some story leeway for a mercenary air force team.

Now I don't know if Deadbeat is around.

Potential interest...if it means I get to fly something like a Prowler or a Thud, or perhaps their modern counterparts. No idea where a merc would get an EF-18G Growler, though.

Don't expect many air-to-air kills, but electronic warfare would be very, very fun.

Hey I'd want to be a drone pilot and fly a Global Hawk but it doesn't really lend itself to being a PC, y'know?

I've heard that Prowlers do, at least. Of course, I don't think EW is featured to the extent that I'd want it to be if I got permission to play as an EW crew...

Fighters such as the F-18 can get a variant where you use EC Ms as a special weapon. If you're thinking more flying a AWACS or E767 jammer then they are not flyable aircraft but most certainly used.

As for the Prowler, you're in luck. Wasn't there also something very similar in the second game? Nevertheless this is Ace Combat we're talking here, today we are moving towards exclusive F-35/F-22 combinations, the Mig 1.44 or the Super Hornet at a stretch and the Terminator was just a tech aircraft. In Strangereal Wardog flies the iconic F-14 and Pixy the F-15.

As for me I have a list of aircraft that my character would fly, the F-111, A-10, Su-37, F-22, F-14, F-16, F-15, GR.4, F-117, Mig-31, F-18, F-35. Basically if you say yes to the Raptor you'll get one pilot, you say no to it but yes to, say, the Hornet you get a different one.

Deadbeat said that he'll allow low-tier before we can "move up" to better fighters.

That said, I don't know if he's on right now.

Depending on which character I use that may well be a plot point, what with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and all. One idea for a character would be one who does not fly, but has tried out the plane and will raise how whether such a god tier plane is worth more than a hanger full of perfectly serviceable aircraft and the pilots to fly them.

In the meantime I'll have a look at drawing up the emblem for my character's squadron.

True, but I'm thinking support-role tricks that the planes would actually be used for: screwing with enemy radar is the main one, but there's also the ability to scramble enemy radio communications, proximity fuses, and datalinks, for instance, or—against older equipment—even perform electronic hacking.

It's not stuff that would be good fare for an Ace Combat protagonist, but someone's got to deal with those radars.

Ooh, I just remembered. As a bonus, there's the EKA-3 "Electric Whale". Tanker and electronic warfare in one handy package. If anyone's got a holed fuel tank, just say the word and I'll get you home safe. As we go up tiers, we upgrade through newer craft—EA-6Bs, EF-111s, EA-18Gs, and eventually a theoretical EF-35 variant or so.

At least a couple of UAVs are in the Ace Combat series.
